Sent you the deep links to the images. Yes, sometimes I still use Brickshelf. In this case it just gave me easier URLs to play with. Never touched Bricksafe, I normally use Flickr for my photos.

I've updated the files for 10194 Emerald Night Emerald Night Complete by Duq, on Flickr I downloaded the file to use it for the new Trains banner but found it had a number of issues: Missing stickers Some wrong parts (like tiles without groove) Some wrong positions (front bogie for example, and the side of the boiler) The odd ghost part and missing part All positions were fractions instead of integers, probably caused by the export from LeoCad All of that is fixed. I also updated the minifigs' the faces and hair as those parts are now available. The mpd files can be downloaded here: https://github.com/Duq42/ldraw-models/tree/master/trains/10194

Ok, this took a little longer than I thought but... here it is: Eurobricks Trains Banner Mockup by Duq, on Flickr In the process I also cleaned up and fixed the LDraw file for Emerald Night I found elsewhere on Eurobricks. (Will post updated files there later). So @Jim, please go ahead and work your magic with the logo. From what I can see there's supposed to be an image with the logo on top of the banner image but that's not used - at the moment it's a 5x5 pixel transparent image. The two images are on Brickshelf: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=6650970 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=6650971

Welcome back to the light ;-) That's a nice little layout you have. Word of advice for steam engines: start small. I've seen too many people get started on some monster project only to get frustrated...

I understand the requirements for the graphics. Is everyone happy (for now) with a slightly better version of Emerald Night? Then I'll create the two images for that. If there are other suggestions members may prefer then I won't be offended...

Pets and trains, show em'. Cats vs. dogs in our hobby.
Duq replied to Coal Fired Bricks's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Nothing against dogs (apart from those yappie f***ers that keep me awake at night) but I'm definitely a cat person. We have two, Lister and Rimmer. Holly unfortunately picked a fight with a car and lost... No pictures of our cats with trains though, as we mainly run the trains at shows and cats don't travel. -
I can do a better image from the .ldr I found for Emerald Night - that'll remove the slight perspective you have in this image and let me add track and a background. And yes, it needs some text - this was a five minute mockup-job ;-)

Interesting variation, having them at an angle. They're known as door rails: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=32028&name=Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Door Rail&category=[Plate, Modified]#T=C Oh, and a week does not count as an older topic. People get annoyed when you drag up topics from many months or even years ago.

From what I can see you need 2 images that are 200px tall. The first one is shown once, the second one repeats as many times as is necessary to fill the width of the screen. The banners I 'quoted' at the top, for Technic, Star Wars etc are 1800x200. Their second image would only be used on very wide screens. For Star Wars it's just black with a few stars, for Technic it's the same image but without the 'Eurobricks uniting Technic...' text. So for trains we could do the same; have an 1800px wide image of something, then a second image that would 'fit' to the right. Another option would be an image of an engine as image 1 and an image of a carriage as image 2, so the wider your screen the more carriages you'd get behind your engine. The only requirement then is that the width of image 1 is a multiple of image 2. I've done a simple mockup, playing with dev tools. Image 1: Image 2: Result: EN-Banner-Mockup by Duq, on Flickr So that's how easy it is. Now we just need someone with better graphic design skills than me to create proper images.

Other people's pictures: always ask permission. The big train: don't know if it was mentioned here, but this is the builder's Flickr: EMD SD40-2 Lego 1:16 by Bricksonwheels, on Flickr Thought there were more photos, not sure where they're gone.

Good idea! Can you also find out the requirements? Size, file type?

But some do, like the ones I highlighted. Long time ago this forum did have a train banner. Then some software update replaced it with white and pink bunnies if I remember correctly and we haven't seen a train since. Hence my question: How do we get a train banner over this forum?
-
Earlier today the banner on the Train Tech forum was accidentally changed to something with a dragon. There were a few complaints, then a post 'it's now fixed', and a lock on the topic. Am I the only one who thinks it's not fixed? Why has it been years since the Train Tech forum had a train-related banner? I've posted here before, I've tried to contact the Trains mod, overall Eurobricks mods, nothing seems to help. The Star Wars banner: The Sci-Fi banner: The Technic & Model Team banner: The Scale Modeling banner: They all make sense. So why are we stuck with this nonsense? Does the Train Tech forum still have a moderator? If so, can you do something about this? There's an old train banner (with the BNSF loco) that would be better than this and I'm sure there are people here who can create something better. So how to we make this change happen? And while we're at it, can we call this forum just 'Trains' instead of 'Train Tech'?

Thanks for the tip! Only it came too late - already ordered the Keenstones... I'll see how I get on with them, might buy your recommendation as well.
-
Those 9V blocks look interesting, much higher capacity than I'd seen sofar. Amazon UK has a similar pack: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rechargeable-Keenstone-Lithium-ion-Self-Discharge-High-Energy-Density-3-Pack/dp/B083J2G1NN Should get it in a week or so, will post findings here. [Edit: fixed link]

This should also help: 08. cylinder tanks v07 at 3.0, 4.0, 4.6, 5.0, 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, 6.0, 6.4, 6.8, 7.2 and 8.0 diameters by wes_turngrate, on Flickr

You can go wider than 16mm if you can use panels for the walls of the hood. I'm looking for battery packs to fit inside steam engines...
-
The short article on BMR raises (no pun intended) the questions but doesn't answer them. It does point to a thread here on EB that my search somehow didn't find (yes, I did search before starting a new thread...) I'm not much of a purist (anymore) so I'd have no problem with third party LiPo packs and I'm handy enough to put something together and wire it up but... despite studying electronic engineering in a previous life I've no idea what sort of circuits would be needed.
-
That's the kind of info I'm looking for - what are decent brands for LiPo batteries, and what sort of extra electronics would I need?
-
Now that the last handful of PF rechargeable battery packs are selling for silly money on BL I'm looking for an alternative for my next train. If it's not going to be original, then I might as well go for a battery pack with a shape and/or size that's easier to hide inside a steam engine. I've seen BuWizz but that's still expensive and includes a controller I don't need (because I already have Pfx bricks). Does anyone have experience with third party rechargeable battery packs like the ones that go into RC cars?

Didn't have time this morning for a longer reply but was going to say pretty much what @zephyr1934 wrote there. My steam engines all have rigid frames, and none of them have ever got stuck on uneven track. This one has no power but is another example of running gear using Technic parts: BR70 rear by Duq, on Flickr

Posting images from Flickr should be simple: Flickr - BBCode link by Duq, on Flickr The popup window is slightly different but you still simply copy that line and paste it in your post like I've done here.
-
Hey @HRBuildNStuf, you've been quiet for a few days. Did my comments help? Have you made some progress with the running gear?

Duq replied to Sven J's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thank you! I had found the Wikipedia page but the description isn't great and for some reason their illustration is of Walschaerts Classic, with a lifting link. This illustration makes it much clearer. I've no problem reading German by the way, just don't ask me to speak it. I even struggle with Dutch sometimes these days... It'll be interesting to see how you're going to model that in Lego.- 49 replies
