Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion

Unless I'm mistaken, we have an infinite number of attempts. That instantly removes the main source of Mastermind's difficulty. -
Heroica: Glory Amongst the Stars Mission #3: Rat Catchers

"This... this is the stupidest bomb I have ever seen." said Enson, "Why in all the hells does it use colored dials instead of a pair of keys or a numerical code or something? Why did someone spend the money to put a speaker on something that's going to blow up? Was this thing built by a toy company? And on the subject of stupidity who in the blue blazes thinks that the best way to clear a blockage in a garbage chute is to blow it up? I'm pretty sure any sane person would expect that just to cause more damage. And why, if he was giving this to a subordinate to use, didn't this 'Georgi' write down the combination in the note?" He shook his head. "Someone else take this... thing. I'm going to poke around in that chute there to see if I can find anything." -
The action is pretty much unchanged from what it was other than bring it it in line with the Crusader and the aforementioned Assassin. I might change one or the other to something involving concealment, but at the moment we really don't have rules for that to begin with. Conjurer then. I only called it Sorcerer because I couldn't think of how to do D&D's 'inherited power' archetype. That may be lost on people, partly because the names of the Warlock's abilities don't evoke that image and partly because it's listed right next to the Witch. I've just gone in and changed the second trait's name to match the intent.

Deleted Sniper and Necromancer. Changed Assassin. Edited actions of Battlemage and Hacker. Renamed Survivalist to Outlander, made significant changes. Maybe, but I happen to be quite proud of the 'semi-spellcaster for non-spellcasting players' idea. Admittedly it's a weird niche that I doubt will find many players will be interested in. But feel is very important to a class and is often going to do more to draw players than mechanics. I also note that the way you divide roles places a lot of emphasis on combat, excessively so in my opinion. I'd prefer a greater number of non-combat classes. You also differ from me in that you lump all non-spellcasters into 'Martial' rather than having a separate 'Skilled' feel. On another note, I feel that not enough has been done to separate the Witch and Warlock thematically, but I'm currently at a loss as to what more can be done (short of renaming the Warlock to 'Cultist' or somesuch).

@Waterbrick Down I think you've misinterpreted the intended nature of the classes I designed. To begin with, the Sorcerer is much more a martial class than an arcane one and I strongly dislike the idea of moving a class intended to emulate stage magicians to a 'attack' role. Similarly the Espatier is intended as a martial class for people who don't specialize in weapon proficiencies. The Prosecutor, despite having Religion/Occult requirements, is primarily intended as a generalist anti-mage rather than focusing on any particular type of magical threat and was very deliberately designed to be a sort of alternative to the Detective.

@samurai-turtle @KotZ @Khorne Pardon me, but would you like some unsolicited tactical advice? -

"Oh dear," said Enson as helped the concierge to his feet, "Do you need any healing?" He glanced at his companions. "You two should take a look at that." he said, motioning toward the garbage chute. Enson will cast Sustaining Healing on Mr. Grumble if he requires it. -

"The guild. The whole premise of doing good throughout the Arm appealed to me. Before I joined I was... adrift one might say, and I'd never really left Vin'quo until recently. This," he gestured vaguely around himself, "this gives me an opportunity to see the rest of the Arm before I'm too old for traveling." -

"I liked the sound of the place." Enson said dryly. -
I've gone ahead with this, and also fiddled with their required proficiencies a bit. I've also added a missing comma to the Scoundrel's action. By the way, does it seem to anyone that the Shaman class doesn't have a clear role? I've mentioned this the WBD in private but I feel it needs more feedback from the 'public'.

Five credits to all agents, Plasma Potion to Aysu. (OOC: I notice that the Essence of Glibness is missing from Aysu's inventory, and the Broom is missing from mine.) "Yes, I should be able to deal with that soon." Enson turned to face the occupants of the room. "Well," he said, "I suppose we should make our way to the garbage chute. Mr. Grumble, if you'd be kind enough to lead the way?" Enson will cast Sustaining Healing on himself. -

Enson will attack Rat C. (OOC: @Waterbrick Down @Peppermint_M, i suggest you both start targeting Rat A instead.) -

(OOC: @Kintobor Actually, Aysu's attack should've failed due to the -1 penalty for attacking a target outside optimal range.) -

"You are being immensely unreasonable." said Enson to the rabid rat before taking another swing. Enson will attack Rat A. -

@KotZ, your character is wielding a Long Range Weapon, whose optimal range is three squares away. At this stage I'd suggest moving to B3 and attacking Drone A, as that's the only way to get an enemy in optimal range available to you. -

(OOC: The hits aren't automatic. If the rats roll a number of Skill successes equal to or higher than the weapon successes rolled + weapon mod the attack deals no damage, as the total successes of defense rolls are subtracted from the total successes of attack rolls to determine damage. So Enson would roll one die and add one success to that and Aysu would roll two dice and add two successes... if not for a major problem I just noticed. @Peppermint_M Simply put, Aysu can't use her gun. Each quality of weapon has minimum corresponding Attribute needed to wield them, and Calibrated weapons require +3 to wield. The thing is that the corresponding attribute is determined by damage type, and the Attribute for Kinetic weapons like Aysu's rifle is Strength, which you only have 2 in.) -

(OOC: A few things; Firstly, weapon and armor mods add additional successes to rolls, not additional die. Secondly, initiative is only rolled on the first round and remains the same for the rest of the battle. Finally, Aysu is welding a Calibrated weapon, which means it adds +2 to damage. Also, it would be nice if you included the enemies' movements when listing actions, as currently it's difficult to tell where each one is.) -

"Right," said Enson, shifting his hammer to a grip not unlike a golfer about to tee off, "Aysu, I suggest you get behind the two of us. Valesia, I suggest you take the right." Enson will move to B3 and attack Rat A. (OOC: @Kintobor Initiative is rolled individually, not collectively, and heroes always act before enemies. The only question here is if Enson or Valesia goes first, which I don't think matters in practical terms so you might as well make it easy to remember and have us act in the order our characters are listed. Also, do the rats have Melee Weapons? Because they don't have any listed and without them their Melee Proficiency is wasted {unarmed attacks only roll the Strength attribute on the attacking end, Melee isn't added}. @Waterbrick Down @Peppermint_M As for tactics, I suggest Aysu move to C5 and attack Rat B while myself and Valesia head to B3 and D3 respectively and attack the rats in front of us. Valesia could also take the opportunity to cast Elemental Ray on all the rats, but that would take all their spirit.) -
I've removed the Blade Sage/Kensei from the document. As much as i want an 'iaijutsu' class (blame the Zatoichi films) I think the design was too messy and the action was largely redundant with how opportunistic attacks work. I'm also considering removing Fluid Footwork from the Swashbuckler and adding a 'Riposte' trait instead and I'd like a second opinion on that. I also don't like the Berserker, I don't think the flavor really fits and I dislike the fact that Relentless is a clear copy of the D&D barbarian's reckless attack. I also think the warrior's current action feels too much like a trait. An idea: Replace relentless with 'war cry' or suchlike and give it the effects of the Warrior's Tactical Mind, give tactical mind an effect like the Warrior's current action, and think up a new action for the Warrior.

"I wasn't suggesting he come any farther than the door, though to be honest I don't want to leave him here alone." He coughed into his fist and turned to address the man; "Are there any stairs you can take up? I'm afraid the elevator is broken at the moment." -

It's also worth nothing that Attribute checks don't work like this, as they don't get the +3. To succeed at one you need to have an attribute score equal to the DC at least, otherwise it's literally impossible. I think the fact that Attributes cost less to upgrade is related to this. -

If that was the case it would be impossible for a player to tell a lie unless they had proficiency in deception, or incapable of finding things without perception, and other such nonsensical outcomes. The system is designed so that MMs can have players of basically any proficiencies on a quest without rendering the party totally incapable of progressing though the quest or doing things that rely on skills they don't specialize in. To put it simply, anything with a DC between 1 and 3 represents varying levels of difficulty of things that can be accomplished without specialized training. Anything higher than that and specialization is required to succeed, as the +3 dice no longer cut it. It's possible to set DC's higher than 3 and still need players to beat them to progress, but at this stage the would be impractical as we simply don't have enough players (and certainly not enough sufficiently proficient ones) to expect that someone with the sufficient score in X proficiency will sign up for any quest (and enough players pooling their dice could circumvent this requirement much of the time anyway, unless something has a really high proficiency). I should point out that most skill based RPG's operate on this assumption of 'you can try, but unless you're trained in it you won't be very good'.
