I just want to thank ZO6 for great review. I do not own the set, but I like the proportions of the model, and overall look. -

MOC: my Orange Excavator
Milan replied to akong's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
And that is the point where we are back to actuators VS pneumatics... with actuators movement of the arm would be smoother and speed of the movement would be constant, pneumatics are easier to install on the arm, etc... RC excavators can not really be built with pneumatics and motor-controlled switch, as blakbird said. only switches controlled by the human hand (slow and with feeling) can provide smooth pneumatic movement. -

My favorites are (flagships) : 8455 Backhoe 8421 Crane The greatest amount of functions, great parts, overall look. It is better to get 2 flagships than 3 smaller sets, imho. But, those choice you made is great too, you can not make wrong choice with sets -

Scania LTF Crane

haha, good luck that i am going to gym, so my back hopefully can handle that weight. i do not know exactly how much weight affect driving performance, but it sure is not very significant. I can not see difference between now, and when i tested naked chassis, with same drivetrain. All 3 axles are braced very well, with locked suspension. "Inline 2 XL" with no weak points can handle it very well. In fact, it can never be heard that sound of motors struggling. Lubrication is applied to: -worm to old diff -diff's gears -connection of the last two axles and technic brick that holds them. i am very proud of front axle and its sturdiness, will use it for another truck-front-axles. Will post video of truck when all sections are finished (will weight approx 10kg), how motors are handling it. Hmm, my tires are pretty much ok. maybe year of production will affect the grip??? you can see that they fit well on my first video. Low quality but tires fit well. -

this is great, i like the color, i would not change the tires, they look great on that bodywork. Beautiful. about drivetrain, i was reading somewhere that a guy put M motor instead the engine, and it struggles to drive the 8466. then he disconnected rear shaft, leaving only front wheels driven, and M powered 8466 with ease. so it looks like 8466 drivetrain is good for demonstrating, not for using it with motors (probably the other bigger sets would have similar issues when driven via motor) -

superstructure and boom Superstructure is mounted, but not finished. Back part of it still need to be done, the one which hold the boom, and the counterweight. It is still without single detail on it, it will be fully detailed once finished with rough building. Boom is also built without single stud visible, used about 200 1x4 tiles on sides, and 50 1x8 tiles on top of it (boom). it is monstrously heavy, looks like final model will have healthy 10 kg. video just rotating with phone cam around truck... -
actually, pneumatics can be even faster than that. LPEs can achieve much more RPM, up to 6000, if air is delivered with big compressor, or plastic bottles with (very) compressed air. goal is to create LPE which is working steady and smoothly in both low and high RPM, and of course high RPM. very hard work, since those guys are working on it for a few years now.

This truck would be soooo good in modelteam. AS for the stickers, it is the easiest way to decorate large panels. -
I think that mayor problem with pneumatic is that they come in only 2 sizes (3 with very old one), none which is usable in even slight bigger working model. I have always wanted long and thin cylinder in my excavators or loaders... LAs could be great great IF they produce micromotor which will connect directly to LA. Now it is still pain in the..to supply the torque to LA.
