You could also use Captain Green Hair's "Build a frigate" for help, it's a great source for help and inspiration! I used it a lot in the starting phase of my HMS Ares, as well as for the bow of the Caribbean Queen.

I didn't have much time to do a lot lately(compared to the process in the first 3 months of the build), but I've finished cross-rigging, so I want to share a short update with you: Before cutting the edges: A "fleet" shot: The cropped climbing-rigging: Sails are next. Hope you like it so far...

INDEX: Historic Ships, Replicas, Figureheads and Models
Aalak replied to BrickPerfection's topic in LEGO Pirates
I wish I could help but I have never visited one of these historical ships, yet... but hopefully that will change soon. @Admiral Croissant: Great pictures again. I guess the Netherlands are full of old ships? -
Wow, the caronade has a nice design! All 3 guns could work, (even if the standard version is a bit to big for the narrower parts of the deck.= I'm with Bart on the new gun ports, even If I suggested it - the old ones look better! But your choice. It's nice to see you still try to modify her!

INDEX: Historic Ships, Replicas, Figureheads and Models

An Idea for other ships you could put on this index (all smaller ships) H.M.S. Pickle (Replica) Pride of Baltimore II Just an idea! -
Yes I did mean that, I like the progress you're making! The Bow looks nice already, but since it's still under construction I wait for the next update. Did you put the kitchen in the ship ... the one you posted in your flickr? I liked the way you used the red clipplates for lobsters Keep it up!
-
I totally agree with the Admiral ... I looks great. One small think I like to add, since she looks like she's gonna get some string rigging. I would use instead of I had better experience with them. Keep it up and you'll get a real beauty!

@Bart That makes a lot of sence :D As I said I don't know that much about sailing, never got my sealegs ... About the size of the canons, and the gunports. I understand what you where saying but I don't think that there are much ways to improve it, without using SNOT to make them smaller in width. But that would change the clear look of the hull, too. But you could add one or two more tan plates one under the tile and one above, under the black line. I don't think that the canons are to small in size for 8 pounders [if we believe that the "standard" lego cannon has a caliber of 12 to 16 pounds. (I allways imagine them as 16 pounders)], even if they could also work as swivel guns if you mount them on the railing of larger ships. I personally would change the cones at the end to round bricks.

Ups I was kind of colorblind last night, the red could go, the blue needs to stay, cause they take the pressure of the bowsprit and hold the masts...
-
Thanks for the feedback again, but I need the "red lines", without them the bowsprit rises like a rocket getting ready to be fired and the other two are crashing down... It looked funny as it happened but could easily be repaired without any cable tangle. So they need to stay. I bought some of the glue Perfectionist suggested. I started the Cross-Rigging on the Ares allready but then the glue went dry after 5,5/9 of one side of the ship... But I learned alot for the rigging of the Queen. Updates with new pictures soon.

Ok, thanks for the education - I'm still a nautic rookie , but I'm learning a lot lately. Didn't now that one until now, my suggestion came from this picture of the HMS Pickle Replica from Wikipedia. As I worked on the Caribbean Queen I used a lot of pictures for references of the rigging and yards (The Pikle as well as the Baltimore Clippers...) and all got the boom, too... So I didn't know that It could work without it. But I'm allways open for feedback! There you can see the boom ...

Great work you've done so far! I love the colorsheme on deck, the red is great. The way you combined the winch for the ancor with the bowsprit! nice work there!!! ok what is missing... first of all, the boom on the first mast you need it for the sail. You could also add another anchor! But in the end she is a beauty aready!
-
Nice work, the blue and yellow colorsheme you added looks great! Good job so far.

Looking good so far with ne new positions of the sidewindows. ... additional windows would be great... but since I don't know your technic behind it... If you need parts and don't want to buy sets, you could use bricklink instead. Could be cheaper sometimes :D
-
I really like the round corners WITH the small windows, nice work there. I haven't seen windows integrated in this technic before, so I really like it!

Thanks Admiral, hope that wasn't your last post! Here is the result of an afternoon of rigging, and yard-replacing... I guess she's near the same state as HMS Ares now. I guess I should start making sails, sooner than later. Has someone any suggestions wich Lego parts could I use to attach the sails to the ropes, so that I can detach them any time? Feel free to comment

Yes, the "white guy" ... grey is ok, but white works defenitly better.

I was intrigued by the title and thought about a big fortress with a lot of guns, but than... that ... OK, I'm kidding (a bit ). It's a nice MOC, great rocks, nothing to fency, but a solid build. the Outpost on top is great too, a bit cramped with redcoats ... The multiple use of the "cheese corners" is great! If I could, I would blog to the front page! EDIT: BIG CAM did it as I wrote it, must be telepathy..

I like parts of your stern design, specially the double-dragon ornament and the technic brick line with the black round plates. But overvall the stern is to wide, my suggestion would be by 4 bricks. Loose the roundbricks and 1x2 bricks beetween the windows. The same goes for the deck, it should be smaller by at least 2 bricks. The roof slopes are great again. But the area with the wheel schould be smaller. Although the wheel should be in front of the mast on the lower part of the deck. Look here: One suggestion, I don't know wich parts are available for you, so, maybe you could try a construction with jumper-plates, on the inner-side of the stern cabin, so that you have an 1/2 brick break and a bit of round shape behind the sidegallerie ... The same in our language, since I'm not sure, If I would understand myself in english Und schnell nochmal auf deutsch, weil ich mich selber schwer verstehene würde. An der Seite, wo die Cabine in die Bordwand mündet... statt dem "harten" Wechsel, am besten mit den Jumper-Plates eine Reihe einbauen --da hast du es wie eine kleine Treppe und etwas runder. Hope I could help you!

Even she's a fantasy build I would like her to have sail plan that would actually be accurate and could work. So, what do you think about my sail-plan (without the cross-rigged sail, it would be to confusing if it hat drawn it, too since I'm not the "Master of Paint" around here For anyone who want's to change someting, here is the original. a blurry shot of the "test-rigging" of the first mast a detailed shot from above, you might be able to see the "catheads" I used this for reference of the ropes.
-
LOL ... Had to google it, since I didn't have him in mind by naming her Caribbean Queen... but since you ask, maybe, but right now I didn't own any brown minfigs. but an old billy with rasta locks on the helm would be a nice gag! thanks for the idea!!!
-
The rigging will be strings, as on the Ares, I already placed the rings on the outside of the railings. Starting a bit behind the masts... The cleats didn't work work on the front since the roundbricks are in the way, but I think they could work the way they are now, too I used this for imspiration now we only need 2L bars... but thanks as allways good advice, I'll see what I can do about the deck towards the stern.
-
Since there are no usable white torsos, and I remembered from one of your last posts, that you don't like to use decals, I must say it's really nice, and with the liles on the torso it could work. they look nice, but maybe use grey arms, too.
-
Done some work in the limited time I had during the last days... but she looks like a ship again... She even got arms for the anchors ...don't now how that's called actually : ... but she'll get a working catspan. The new stern - all white and black ... bye bye yellow I welcome all feedback!
-
I like what you did with the parts available to you ... just a suggestion for the masts, since your ship already reminded me of the Baltimore Clippers, why didn't you try something like that ... Put the masts on and and put a plate in between for hinge-parts for the right angle. to stablize is, try to build a small "guardrail" around, something like that: (picture by Phred) Don't know how this "guardrail" is actually called, since I'm a nautic analphabet... I tried the same construction today for the "The Caribbean Queen" and it does work great... but since my handycam makes blurry pictures too, you would only see black So, hope I could help with a constructed feedback
