I don't actually think they are all that different in size. They both have the same number of sails. If you consider that the cabin of the BP takes up the space of the rear two cannons of the QAR, they are probably almost the same length as well. The major difference is the enormous backside of the QAR, which isn't going to affect much in a battle anyway. And besides, who doesn't prefer a slightly uneven sea battle? It's not like there aren't examples from history of the smaller ship/fleet winning...

Waaait... this is how the thread got started? I ignored it because I couldn't see the forum agreeing on any kind of consensus (everyone should build based on their own ideals), and now I find a discussion has been going on for a while now about a game called 'Rocks and Shoals'? Just for those of us who are late to the party, could this be broken up into different threads, or a new thread created outlining what is happening in the 'Rock and Shoals Beta Test' thread? I just want to know what's going on without reading through hundreds of posts.

For some reason it's hard to find a good side-on shot of the actual BP, but as far as I can tell the overall shape of the ship is the same. I'm not surprised they took the link down. Of course, I saved the ship to my computer as soon as I saw it . And no, I'm not sharing it with anyone who hasn't been around for the last couple of days.

I think it's to match the silhouette of the ship, which looks like this: Something like the shape of the BB just isn't going to look right. Unfortunately since the cabin takes up the entire rear section of the ship, it ends up being way too low. I also wonder if the bottom of the ship isn't obscured a bit by the waves, making the cabin look lower than it really is. I've looked back at the preliminary images of the other sets, and I think I have to agree - apart from the sails, this probably isn't going to change much. Oh well. The faster the POTC theme sinks, the sooner we get Classic Pirates back.
-
Here are the 38 characters that make up my pirate theme so far. I put a lot of thought into this - I used each head only once, and I've tried to spread out the torso and accessories so that each figure is unique in some way.
-
Only the BB and the IF, sadly. I don't really like the QAR enough to own it, but I'm considering the BP. Alternatively, when the BP comes out, I am thinking of building the BB using black whenever there is supposed to be brown, dark bley where there is supposed to be tan, black sails, and the BP figurehead. Could be expensive to get all the parts, though.

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
David Thomsen replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
This is pretty much my thinking. For some reason I am thinking of the 'Doctor's Wife' episode of Doctor Who, but with Jack Sparrow as the Doctor, the Black Pearl as the Tardis, and Helena Bonham Carter as the 'Doctor's Wife'. Directed by Tim Burton. I think that would make a great film. -
I'm still waiting for my Indiana Jones D2C set. Circus Train? Brunwald Castle? Until then I don't see a POTC D2C set happening of any sort. Regarding the low cabin... I think this is to make the silhouette look more like the BP from the film. The raised cabins from previous ships are kind of cartoonish. Having said that, I do prefer cartoonish cabins to suitable silhouettes. What Aanchir said about the inclusion of Davy Jones makes a lot of sense, I think I would have preferred some soldiers though, maybe with their own small boat à la BB. The new torso from London Escape is horribly underused in only one set. However, if this is possibly the last POTC set (maybe even TLC don't know for sure), it's best to have Davy Jones in this set than risk not releasing him at all. While this isn't the most ideal possible representation of the Black Pearl, I do honestly believe that this is all they could do within certain limits.

I think this is the main thing that separates the likers from the haters. The likers look at the ship in the terms of a classic Lego sailing ship, whereas the haters want the ship to be more like the BP from the films. I think Lego made the right call - if it becomes too big and complicated, it will be too expensive and difficult for children. I haven't bought any POTC sets because they don't quite gel with my Classics stuff (I like my sets to be more than just 'scenes from movies'), but I'm seriously considering adding this to Brickbeard's fleet. Comparing the BP with other ships, I think the cabin is too low, though... I think that and the two cannons/three ports are my only real complaints. Otherwise I like it.
-
I think if the ship had three cannons, they would all be in the preliminary pic. QAR had more than twice as many flaps as cannons, so it's safe to assume from this image that the BP will be the same. Does anyone else besides me have nice things to say about the ship? I mean, I agree with some of the negative things that have been said, especially the two cannons thing, but I want to balance those out because I really don't think the ship is that bad. Also, this is prelim, so the sails might have printing on them in the final release, making it look less like a 'blob'.

...I actually like this. I don't know why people think it's thinner than previous ships - that hull piece at the front is clearly the same as in previous ships, therefore this ship is the same width. I find it funny that people complained a few years ago that the ships had the same piece at the stern as at the bow, and now people are complaining that it doesn't use the same piece at both ends. Can't please some people... I only collect things to supplement my Classic Pirates theme, and I'm far more likely to buy this than the QAR. This ship just kind lf looks like a modified black version of the BB, so it wouldn't stand out too much... QAR is quite obviously a ship from a movie.

Soldiers torso from London Escape pink print?
David Thomsen replied to Captain Green Hair's topic in LEGO Pirates
My soldier torsos are noticably pinkish too, but fortunately I have dozens of good ones from 2009. It's a bit sad that their QC got worse, though - aren't things usually supposed to get better? -
This is a little unfair since most of the sets are extremely hard to get now. Nevertheless, in ascending set number... 6243 Brickbeard's Bounty 6270 Forbidden Island 6276 Eldorado Fortress 6277 Imperial Trading Post 10210 Imperial Flagship That gives you a pirate ship and a pirate base, an Imperial ship and an Imperial base, and also the only thing close to a civilian harbour. This also comes with a civilian ship. I know most people prefer the BSB to the BB, but I prefer the colours and design of the BB, even if the masts are a bit rubbish. And nothing can beat the IF. Unfortunately nothing from 2009 comes close to the earliest bases and outposts.

Probability of returning to Classic Pirates after POTC...
David Thomsen replied to David Thomsen's topic in LEGO Pirates
Ooh that is gorgeous. And army building would be so easy with army sets that big... I would love to see more pirate era sets based inland. -
Taken down already. I guess it's super top secret, since no one has heard of it and they won't let you see the trailer.
-
I agree that the POTC sets and characters are well designed, but they're maybe a little too detailed for my taste... I prefer the generic style of the Classic Pirates. I like the way you can build distinctive and unique characters out of a combination of generic pirate minifig pieces, but Jack Sparrow's legs, torso, head and hair will always belong to Jack Sparrow.

Probability of returning to Classic Pirates after POTC...
David Thomsen replied to David Thomsen's topic in LEGO Pirates
I think it would be interesting to create a new thread with a poll to find out whether people are pro- or anti-Islander. I am pro. I have never felt that the Islanders were a caricature of any real indigenous people. They are a fantasy based on the idea of a primitive culture living on islands, so far removed from reality that I don't think anyone could be offended by it. Yes, there's more to "Islanders" than bones and leaves... but there's also more to Pirates than gold and hook hands... and there's more to Castle than bows and swords... I think it's easy to identify 'Islanders' as the people of Caribbean and Micronesia because of the relative minority of these islands, whereas you don't think of 'Castle' as the people of anywhere in particular because there are so many, many places in Europe they could represent. I do think your study of political science has made you prone to see racism where there isn't any. Otherwise I challenge you to take offense that 'Lego City' represents your society as nothing more than a collection of emergency services... -
I dunno... that article is from late May, ComicCon is less than two months later... I doubt they'll even be anywhere near the prototype stage by that point.

I got three of Mac McCloud's head (I always get multiple of every printed item so I can choose the one with the best printing). Two were in the old style with three holes, the third was in the new style with no holes. I really have no idea why this happened.

I am kind of glad my girlfriend hasn't seen this thread. Sometimes she doesn't understand the mindset of a Lego collector. She certainly wouldn't appreciate all this drama over a few small plastic coins..

Wait, haven't we already had Avatar Lego?
-
From Wikipedia: "The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures." So you're both right. Apparently Joss Whedon is writing and directing - so this could possibly be the first Whedon-related Lego? I think I'd like to see the Avengers licensed, but only because Lego can have so many licensed themes at a time and if they drop Pirates of the Caribbean in favour of Avengers, this could see the return of Classic Pirates. Yes, I realise this is not why I should be pro-Avengers.

My tutorial: Applying/removing offical TLG stickers
David Thomsen replied to Darth Legolas's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That's the technique I use at work to remove stickers from DVDs. I don't really like chemicals because the cases usually end up being slimy and/or smelly. It doesn't have to be the same sticker, you can also use any kind sticky tape which is sometimes better.
