Heroica RPG - Quest #48: Death's Homecoming
Dannylonglegs replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Hmm." chuckled the ancient Druid. "I was under the impression that the humans made your entire race... But if you weren't all created by humans, then, or birthed from Eve, then who made you? It wasn't the Brothers. They're not they creator types. No. Was it Mythrogg then? Do you all come from him?" -

"Oh yes, I hope to see you soon as well." He stated. "Marty's apprentice. Karie. I hope to see you again soon... with the Po brother's heads." He gestures the party to go with his large-ringed talon. The Party made their way out of the Nest, side-stepping resting and delirious were-ravens (delirious from who-knows-what.) and avoiding the many disreputable acts and shady deals that were being made under the boardwalk. The Party returned to the lighthouse. The rain had returned to a light drizzle. Where will they go next? -

"Very well. You may have this gift." the were-raven spoke. He handed the box to his goon, who handed it to Nessa. "Now, are you finished here?" Nessa Anárion (herrJJ) 59 years old female elven Ranger Level 9 Power: 16 (Lvl. 9 + WP: 7) Defense: 1 Health: 14/14 Gold: 1 Equipment: Silver Crossbow with Raven-Slayer Bolts (WP 7 (+3 vs. werefolk (removable)), usable by Rangers), Leather Armour (SP: 1), Inventory: Potion, Smoke Bomb, Bedroll, Magic Compass, Venom, Croise Bow (WP: 6) -

"Aww, how sweet." snarked Sylph grimly. "So after all this time, all you wanted was some company?" he questioned, not quite sure what the progg was getting at. "Wanted someone to fill that little hollow part inside your carapace?" -

"Ah good." Stated the were-raven, looking down at the ornamental box in his talons with a mixture of respect and disgust. "I would be willing to give you a gift.... as a pre-payment for bringing me the heads of the Po brothers. My family has long held in our possession, a certain... relic; the magic silver bolts used by the Raven-Slayer, an ancient evil human who sought to rid the world of werefolk. We keep these bolts so that they may not be used against us, but they may prove invaluable to getting rid of the Po Brothers." He opened the box and removed one of cartridges of crossbow bolts. They were beautifully crafted. Nessa could tell they would make her crossbow more effective at killing werefolk. Item: Raven-Slayer Bolts (+3 to WP of crossbow when used against werefolk (would be added to the crossbow, with the option to spend a turn to remove them)) "This gift, however, is not without some rules. I would demand that you not use these bolts on any of my men, including those who are out of my favor... apart from the Po Brothers. Furthermore, 50 gold would be removed from the final payment for their heads. Apart from that, however, they would be yours to keep. I no longer wish to safe-guard the blood-stained relics. Is this a deal?" -

"We don't know if he's planning to fight us yet." stated Sylph. "Frankly, I'd be surprised if that was what he was planning. He might. I won't deny the possibility, but I think it may be wise to hold onto your consumables on the off-chance that he simply wants to talk." Sylph was rather reluctant to battle the monster who had devastated a castle with a passing glance. " He's been next-to-neutral through-out this ordeal, after-all." -

The were-raven looked up from his ring and towards the frightened knight. "Look" he started, motioning with his right talon to emphasize some of his words. "I'm a reasonable man, and I've got a large, respectable family. Do good by me, and you do good in the city. However... If you disrespect me and my family... and my people, then... you'll live to regret it. I don't go around killing people. That'd be bad for business. But if you think you can crawl into my Nest and encroach on my hospitality and insult my race and organization, then you've got another thing coming." At Karie's deft damage-control, the were-raven seemed to settle down. "Hmm." He said, sad-voiced. "I see... I'm an honourable man, and I respect any man who serves his country at the cost of hisss.... better judgments." He fixed his cuff-links non-threateningly. "Hhmmm." he pondered suddenly. He walked over to one of his goons, and tapped him on the shoulder. He whispered in the were-raven's ear, and the goon nodded intently. He looked at his boss with a dumb, confused look, and replied: "Right away boss." and vanished from the room. "I just thought of something. If you're serious about offing the Po brothers, then I may have something that you may find useful..." His man returned, carrying a small fabric box with an exotic pattern adorning it. The Crime-Boss took the item with some care, and looked it over grimly. "Do any of you use crossbows?" -

The were-raven crime-lord looked down at Drake, unamused. "It did." He stated bluntly, returning his gaze to a very large ring on his other talon. -

"Well, sure. Anything for a friend of the family..." Started the deep-voiced were-raven. "I'm afraid that any rumours I've heard are somewhat limited in their relevance to those that have to do with my... line of business... but I've heard several. You likely already know them. First there's that one rumour that everyone seems to be talking about: 'the Lord is passing a law restricting the trade of cloth to only one non-Brendentonian company.' aside from that, I can tell you there's a prison cart carrying one of my men, Bo Ba, from the West Peasant District to the Court district around half past four today.... but I'm not doing anything about it. Bo's a bad kid, and he's brought shame to the family. Some time behind bars might help him think about his actions next-time. Ummm. There's also the Clothes Guild Head. He's been spending money all over town. Seems like he's expecting his ship to come in soon, but it doesn't have anything to do with my line of business." The were-raven mob-boss looked down at the rings on his talons again, and adjusted one. -

"Great, the monster's got one power play left. I'll buy a Nostrum, and a Grand-Tonic. I suggest someone gets a phoenix essence. Also, whomever wears the hide of the Wound can use a Soma and poison to gain 7 power. That plus a mead would be a potent mix." -

"Marty wanted the bastards dead too? Huh. He had more sense then I thought. I always thought he didn't involve himself in 'petty quarrels' though. they must have done something mighty nasty to him or the Cult. Hmm. You must invest heavy trust in your bodyguards, though. The Po brothers are a nasty couple. They aren't called the Cloak and the Dagger for nothing after all. Tell you what, if you can do the duo in, I'll pay you myself, 100 gold to you and your crew. Bring me back their heads, and you can claim the reward. You do know what you're up against, though, right? Now that they're being paid to do the Church's dirty work, they're likely well equipped and dangerous as ever." -

"Ah," spoke the venerable, morose were-raven. "I understand, Karie. You must be very heart-broken. I'll send your bank some flowers to mourn his passing. What colour flowers do you like?..." He tapped his goon on the shoulder and whispered something about flowers to him. The goon nodded and walked out of the guarded room. "Ah, the Po brothers? It's been a long time since I heard their names. They're not welcome here, as you know." He stated, looking at his ringed talon dolefully. "You'd do better to ask the church about those no-good treacherous wretches." He stated, now more irritated then sorrowful. "It's been three years. Three years since they 'got a better offer.' Three years since my best hitmen joined the bloody church! What makes you think they'd come crawling back to my nest, or that I'd let them. Next time I get my talons on them they wont have necks to wrangle, if you understand my meaning. I don't know where they are now, but you won't find them here. So why have you come here into my Nest to ask me to where they've flown? You're the information brokers, not I. I guess the People's church is where my men most frequently see them. You insult me by bringing their names into my happy Nest. Is that why you came here? To insult me on your master's death-bed?" -

"What?" demanded the Mob-boss, slowly, with his strange accent and deep voice. He sounded sad, or at-least, sad-voiced. "Why, that's... such a shame, that is. Why, he was a good friend of the family, he was. You, then are to be his replacement? What's your name, Missus? And, umm, who are these people you're traveling with?" -
A few more months and we'll be rivaling the discussion topic. Call your next quest, "How much action can you fit in one day/8-story fall." Oh, yeah, and, Yeah, the references in that last update are kind of obvious. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

"Uhh... We've got urgent news for your boss." Stated Drake, conveying Karie's message... "We're associates of Marty." He finished, sounding tough and in-charge. "Hmmm." grumbled the were-raven suspiciously. "Who's Marty?" The were-raven was obviously quite low on the pecking order. "Obviously yous ain't normal trespassers though." He stated. "Umm. Hmm. I'ma take yous to the boss." He grumbled. "Come with me." He commanded softly, looking around and gesturing the party down the stairs with his crossbow. The party descended down the two flights of stairs beside the lighthouse. Underneath the boardwalk, the Party was surprised to see a rather extensive construction of wood, nets and chain. It seemed that there was a hidden street beneath the boardwalk. The party followed the wet were-raven though the dark, dripping cavern. the place was crawling with were-ravens, engaging in business and conversation. Finally, the party came to a door in the cliffs which made up the one wall. Their guide opened the door, and the party stepped in. They were now in a hallway carved of hewn-stone, light by several torches. It seemed to be an extension of the sewer, from the smell. Their guide led them to a wooden door. "Alright, here we are." The were-raven stated, removing his hat and playing his talon across his wet forehead feathers. He knocked on the door. "Hey boss. we've got some li'l humans here to see you. They say they've got some'n to tell you. some'n 'bout some goon called Marty." "Let them in." The Party heard from inside the room. It was the first time they'd ever heard a deep voice attached to a were-raven. The were-raven goon opened the door and gestured the party in with his hand-crossbow. Within, they saw a regal-looking were-raven in business attire and a darkly dressed female were-raven. "Welcome to the Nest, guests." He spoke to the party in his strangely deep voice. "I'm Boss Don Ba, and this is my lovely wife Ja Ba. Now, what was this I heard my man say about you and Marty?" -

This here's private property." The were-raven said to Drake, less irritably. -
