Heroica RPG - Quest #150: A Moment of Silence

"Thalion, if Tra-Serral wishes to bear this curse, then so be it. But if not and if it intends harm for this country, then I will not stand by seeing it continue." -

Skrall's face soured at the truth of the situation. "Aye, no good can ultimately come from pacts with such power. History is not founded upon a single event, but a multitude of tiny decisions. Heroica, Baltarok, each moment of our lives has been shaped by millions upon millions of decisions. They shall not be defined by such a thing as this, one falsehood will not negate the foundings of such undertakings. As we have sworn, the events of this eve shall not leave this room, but I don't have a mind to let that 'thing' remain either. Baltarok would be good to end its servitude to its bloodlust once and for all." -

Skrall gazed at Tarvalk trying to read the fire in his eyes. "Is it Tarokai? Does he live again, Tarvalk? Perhaps the wereviper was right in a way, was he trackin' a demon, or had he come across the trail of a spirit? Tis the only thing I can think of that the world would hunt your people down once more for. Will alliance with this power be worth the cost? Who are ya to dictate who knows the truth? What honor there is in deception will be short lived." Skrall paused once more. "I can give ya my word to see Baltarok kept stable and safe, nothin' else." -
That is correct. Free hits are cumulative in order to keep high SP from becoming too game breaking.

Skrall shrugged his shoulders, "He ain't done nothin' yet against no law that I'm aware of. He freely gave himself over, a better assassin would have bided his time, waitin' fer the prime opportunity. I say we take him to Tarvalk and see what happens." -
Five years ago I had never played a single RPG. Heroica RPG was my first introduction into the exciting hobby and I now regularly host and play in several RPG's outside of Eurobricks. It gives me an out for my creative side and I will never forget the excitement of having my very first character walk through the doors of Heroica Hall. None of this would have ever been possible without you, Sandy! Your determination to see this game through five years has been inspiring to watch. You have helped to found a community so richly diverse that even should Heroica RPG end, I'm sure would continue on in some form or fashion. As a group we have seen our members go through all aspects of life, from loss of family members, to births of children, weddings, graduations, job losses, cross country moves, you name it and we wouldn't have this community to share those things with without you, Sandy. The world of Heroica RPG stands as a testament to the amazing process of collaboration and this ship has been helmed by an incredible captain. From the story lines, to the game mechanics, to the characters, to the arbitration between arguing members, Sandy, you have created a work of art that you should be proud of and all of us have been impacted in some way by the hours you have poured into this community. In whatever way you continue moving forward with us, we will all be incredibly grateful for everything you have shared. LEGO as we all know stands for "play well", and you have indeed led us to do just that. Well done!

Skrall looked to Olmystr, "I doubt there's anybody in this city who could corroborate our friend's accusations here, is there?" "We ain't got evidence he's lyin' nor do we have evidence he's tellin' the truth. If we kill him, we run the risk of havin' a demon runnin' rampant on our hands. If we let him live, we give him an openin' at Tarvalk. I ain't too keen on the second option." -

Skrall turned to the monk, "I'm not sayin' he hired anyone. Right now we have word that there was an assassination plot on the clan leaders. This guy's sayin' there was no assassination plot, only a plot to stop a demon. He hasn't answered the question of why we should believe him and I'm not currently convinced by his story. He better say somethin' more substantial soon or we're goin' have other problems." -

"Ya said yerself at the feast, we couldn't rule yer father out as behind all of this." Skrall turned back to the Wereviper. "And what exactly helped ya "narrow it down" to Tarvalk?" -

"Easy, Tra-serral, let's not go pokin' holes in folks until we get to the bottom of this. I believe ya yerself said that no one was above suspicion. Now why don't ya remove yer blade? I'm sure he can't do any harm without his weapons." Skrall picked up the sword and shield from the ground before turning to the assassin. "The Wanderin' Silence hasn't seemed in the business of being helpful as of late. Ya mind elaboratin' on all this?" -

"I trust everythin' went well with the rest of ya?" Skrall tosses the Ethereal Diamond to Boomingham before turning to the assassin. "Aye, ya mind tellin' us what ya were doin' on top of the wall in the first place?" -
They can't, where did you see they could?

"Because those who serve Heroica do so under choice. Ya commit yerself wholeheartedly. I can understand it bein' strange and it may be a human thing, but there the free choice of the individual holds much more sway than tradition or honor. For good or bad it is hard to say an' perhaps it may have somethin' to do with their shorter life spans. It is difficult to see how one's actions will have consequence beyond the here and now when one's life is but a breath on the wind compared to other races." "Some positions are not to be envied." Skrall watched as the assassin escaped, but dared not draw his weapon in fear of startling the crowd, "He's up top, but we're goin' have to figure out a way to pin this guy down, if he keeps hoppin' all over the place we'll never get him. Should we split up in hopes of cuttin' off his escape route?" -
It's up to you. Open world can be done but you have to be willing to either build every single location available to the party (ala quest 130 or 132) or stay one step ahead of the party (very time consuming), it does however free you to let the party do its own thing (which may be good or bad depending on how motivated the party is). Building out every scene allows you to update quickly and always have everything prepared, but it means you have to work hard at keeping your party on track either by enticement (there's treasure this way) or punishment (TPK if you go this way). Personally, I tend to build some of the main scenes of the quest and then fill in the rest with smaller stuff as the quest unfolds.
-
Here and here, the issue is it's very time consuming if you want to do it well, plus it takes a whole lot more planning. Instead of scenes that simply portray a piece of the story you have to plan out the actions of the scene, then you have to decide if you're going to incorporate dialog, then you find that not only do you have to build scenery but you have to build it in such a way that it doesn't interfere with the action of the scene, i.e. you have to keep studs available for walking, doors actually have to be able to open, etc. It's a tough challenge and maybe one I'll be up trying again at some point, but for now I'm reserving more of my efforts to planning other stories. Production has been pushed back due to disagreements about acting contracts. No really, I'm intending at one point or another to really put some work into it, just got to get the motivation.

Skrall paused for a moment considering the path forward before continuing, "It weren't so much as joinin' Heroica, as it was wantin' nothin' to do with me. Can't say I blame 'em though, I left when they were wee little ones and never really made it back home. Always figured we'd reconnect some day and I could explain everythin' to 'em, but so far, the only welcome I've had is a closed door an axe at my throat. They made it to Eubric, but I doubt I'll be seein' 'em any time soon. What of ya? Do ya fancy followin' in yer father's footsteps as clanleader one day?" Upon reaching the gathering Skrall inspected the crowd. "If Bastala was tellin' the truth we don't have to worry about any more disguises, which means we're on the look out for a greenskin turncoat or someone who ain't from here. Master Thalion, if we've got a teleporter, I think those shackles of yers will come in handy." <Aazy, you said you got a look at one of the assassins with a helmet during the feast. That him?> Skrall silently indicated the cloaked figure with the green helm. -

"I hope ya know what yer doin' Bastala. While change can be good, it definitely breeds uncertainty, ya'll have to work twice as hard to now that ya'll be at the forefront of things as opposed to workin' behind the scenes." The hunter pulled the ex-clan leader aside, "Grishnod, if there be anythin' ya be a needin', don't be afraid to ask. I know from personal experience, it's no easy thing seein' yer own flesh and blood take a different path than ya were hopin' fer." Skrall gathered his spent ammunition and turned to Nerwen, "It probably wouldn't hurt if ya had another weapon handy, Ms. Nerwen. I've got enough weapons as is currently. Yer right though, with Gor and Grishnod saved fer the time bein' we'd best be checkin' in on Taravalk and Kaarstal. We've got an invisible assassin on our hands as well it would seem. If he jumped off the wall earlier, I'd like to take a look around the scene of his fleein' to look fer any tracks." -

Perhaps instead of a healer who heals via denying damage, you could create a class that works by boosting current health beyond the maximum? -

Skrall pondered on the child's betrayal of her father before turning to the pair. "Like Lord Boomin'ham here, I am unacquainted with the traditions of this place, but it seems to me that a great many unnecessary risks were taken that could have been spared. How can you harbor such contempt for yer father so as to even consider his life worth offerin' for some sort of peace treaty? I understand sometimes tradition can be stifilin' but if ya throw all of it out, how can ya say who ya even are anymore? Why is it that greenskins must always be the ones adaptin', must be the one's who have to change? I'm not offerin' answers, just wantin' ya both to consider what yer doin' here. Sounds like ya've had yer fair share of spats in the past and if yer thinkin' about settelin' the scores now, I'd ask ya to at least do so on yer own good time and not when we've still got a good half dozen other assassins to track down. I'll leave ya to figure this out between yerselves."
