Too much work. Use tape to cover up the stuff you don't wanna erase. I prefer using cloth as well than paper towels, because paper just likes to tear apart.

Might I suggest the green neck braces instead with the brown 3x3 dish? It's what I did with my turtle (which is still a WIP), but it gives the shell a bigger appearance.

He sanded down the stud on a gold 1x1 plate, which reveals the hole underneath it.

They are both custom. Legolas is made by Armothe of BrickForge, and Aragorn is obvious because the sword is the BrickForge Sovereign Sword and not Lego's own.

It's the quality of the plastic that Shapeways uses. It's low par compared to other plastic. Plus it's the way I colored it too. :P
As for the ears, I chose not to put them on because pointy years is a pain, and I already done it a few times and I just hate doing it.
