New grays actually closer to neutral gray than the old ones?
naf replied to Xfing's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I like new gray when building futuristic models, and I prefer old gray when building castles. As funny as it sounds, I think old gray bricks that have yellowed look good for castles, as it makes the bricks look a little weathered. -

naf replied to Xfing's topic in General LEGO Discussion
This is probably because the older bricks eventually yellowed, which could cause it to look like that. This even happens to brand new bricks still in the original box. I bet they didn't look as "sickly" back when they were brand new. I agree, there is no consistnecy in the reddish brown. I bought a bunch off of the pick a brick wall, and while I was stacking the 1x2 bricks there were 2-3 difference shades of reddish brown. I agree with Lego changing greys to bluish grey, they just look better. While I like reddish brown, I really didn't think they needed to change it. Old brown looked fine to me. -
How to clean the Ship Sails?--Lego 6289 Sails

Unfortunatey I don't have a before picture, but trust me when I say that the white parts of the sail were dingy and yellowed. I soaked them in the solution for probably 5 hours or so, and then rinsed and ironed under a white t-shirt to protect them. This is how they look now, nice and bright. You got the right stuff, the Vanish for whites probably has some kind of bleach in it that you want to stay away from. -

I'm assuming that Vanish is the same as the Oxy Clean that I use. Just mix according to the instructions and let the sails soak for a few hours. You should be able to find it anywhere, local grocery store, drug stores, etc. -
This right here. Sets are great, and a lot of them are favorites and display well, but part of Lego is taking them apart and reusing the parts for something else. I had most of my sets set up on my shelf at one point, but I couldn't MOC anything due to lack of parts. I took everything apart, sorted the bricks, and now I have a pretty large selection of parts to use. And now you have empty shelf space to display those MOCs ;)

I sent a PM yesterday, didn't get a reply. Just sent another PM to you.

This is one thing you should always say never to :) You'll always regret selling beloved Lego sets, because you'll want to revisit them later in life.

I'd like 2, PM sent.

I'm not sure what oxy action is, but I'm assuming it's probably the same thing as oxy clean from the name. I don't think simply using detergent will work, you really need an oxygen based cleaner to see good results. I say overnight, but realistically 3-4 hours should do the trick. -
LEGO shouldn't make new parts for a year?
naf replied to legolijntje's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I read somewhere that Lego has actually trimmed down their total parts catalogue significantly from the 90's. I'd rather see Lego produce current parts in more colors than make new molds for completely new parts. I'm one of those people who like to see creative use of existing parts to achieve an effect rather than creating a new part. As for minifig accessories there really can't be enough -
Agreed. The main body and cockpit looks great, but the wings and guns have taken 2 steps way back. I'm glad I have the 2006 version, as it's definitely superior. Add another one to my list of remakes: I want remake of the emperor's shuttle, mainly because I want an imperial shuttle and an emperor palpatine minifig.
-
Two big ones that were on my list for remakes are getting released this year: sand crawler and Mos Eisley cantina! -TIE Interceptor -TIE Bomber -Darth Vader's TIE Advanced -Tuskan raider set so we get these guy re-released! Would be cool if they included some in the Mos Eisley set but nope... :( -Cloud City, would like a remake the size of Ewok Village. Ok, I'll throw a PT set in for good measure: Hailfire droid

Picked up duel on geonosis today, mainly for Yoda and Dooku minifigs. Was 50% off, not too keen on the set but I can use the parts for MOCs.
-
Just picked up an AT-TE, 2 corporate droid thanks, and a handful of clone vs. droideka battle packs. I'm an OT guy, and pretty much despise the PT and swore I would never get any of the PT sets. Well, the battle of geonosis and the battle of coruscant are the 2 scenes that I actually enjoy watching so I figured I'd pick these up while I can. Will probably get the republic drop ship when I see a good sale.

Soak the sails overnight in a solution of oxyclean and water. Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry. When almost dry, iron them with (under a clean cloth to protect them from the iron) so that they are crisp and wrinkle free. My Black Seas Barracuda and Caribbean Clipper sails were yellow due to age, and they looked like new after doing this. -
I might try covering the outside in plates after I build it to see how that looks.

I don't think Lego is intentionally trying to up the piece count, it would be very tedious to do this with very little gained. I think imvanya is correct, perhaps they had more 1x3's instead of 2x3's so they used those to keep costs down. It also gives us more options for MOCing later on, so I'm fine with it. The only time I use larger parts is when I need more stability, I prefer smaller parts as they give me more building options.
-
There are a lot of reasons Lego would choose to put 4 1x1 bricks side by side instead of a 1x4 brick. It gives you more bricks to MOC with when you take the model apart. Perhaps there are some kind of stability issues with using a single 1x4 that using several 1x1's solve (or vice versa). At the very least, it might have been dictated to the designers that they have to use certain pieces due to production issues to keep costs down (they have a big surplus of 1x1 pieces in the needed color, or they have a shortage of 1x4's). I don't believe for a minute that they're doing this just to "pad the piece count."

I think this is a great model, I'm definitely going to get one at some point. I don't get why people are getting hung up on the "UCS" terminology. The old sandcrawler was considered a UCS set, and it's a playset. This is definitely more detailed than the old one, so I don't see why it wouldn't have the "UCS feel." I like how they define the term, it's basically the most expensive, complicated models they produce. They have highly detailed playsets (sand crawler, ewok village, and hopefully in the future a cloud city?!?), large non-minifig scale screen accurate ships, and the sculptures like R2-D2 and Yoda.

Lots of licensed buys over the past month... both in themes I thought I had little interest in. However, my wife is a huge super hero fan and we're both old school TMNT junkies. Super Heroes: Power Armor Lex Bat Cave Funhouse Joker Steam Roller TMNT: Turtle Lair Shellraiser

I just hope people buying classic blue spacemen don't start cracking the helmet to match Benny's in the movie. There are only so many of those helmets around in good condition!

Of course I prefer printed bricks, but if we have to go the sticker route I prefer clear. I have clear stickers on my train sets from the mid 80's that are still looking very good. The stickers I applied to my Battle of Hoth set that I just bought last year are already starting to peel off. There is an excellent tutorial on the site here that shows how to make your own stickers using a laser printer and packing tape. I've been using it to replace white stickers that have peeled off with very good results. I've also started the habit buying a couple extra sheets of stickers from bricklink for my sets, for new sets they are usually a dollar or under.

Apples and oranges, those 2 sets aren't even in the same league! If you have the cash, get the asylum for sure. If you wait until tomorrow you'll get the free martian manhunter too.

Awesome. I think it's one of the better carriage builds, plus it comes with those nice printed horses.
