[HELP] Gearbox Design
mike4slund replied to Splat's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi! I just made your Gearbox with a few additions. I also plan in using it in my 4x4 I'm going to build and model after my 4 runner! I'm going to use a xl motor for the drive and get rid of the u joints. Thank you for the instructions. They were extremely hard to follow tho. Especially with the same picture multiple times. I will post a picture soon. -
Recent LEGO Experience

Well the original set is a retired set and not in stock. But at least I got something out of the deal! :D I have always had very good luck with Lego customer service. When I bout my Unimog it was missing all the pnematic cylinders and hose. they promptly sent all my missing parts! :D -
So the girlfriend buys me a 9393 Technic Tractor online at lego.com. It doesnt say out of stock, etc. so when she gets the package in the mail today they sent a lego city monster truck transporter. Is this a normal lego practice? that if something sells out they just send whatever random lego set is "comparable"? Why not just call or email? anywho, they gave her a full refund and let us keep the one they mistakenly sent! Woohoo!

I will build this someday. hopefully in the near future. where can one find the instructions? -
i added this to the front to support the front and keep it from lifting up during stress, doesnt get in the way and it seems to be working z little better.. (gotta replace that broken piece, although, its only used for spacing)
-
i did that as well and that helped tremendously. but occasionally it still skips...does your not slip?
-
THANKS! Why didnt i think of that!. lol. and i figured out my gear skipping issue on the steering as well, i had to remove the stock steering (stops) and now it works decently. it still skips under high load though. :( still having some gear slipping issues with the drive train as well.
-
how did you attatch the steering rack piece? there is a shadow and i can not clearly see...the way i have it attatched allows it to move funky. lol.also, did you use a longer steering rack? because with this gear it moves to far and skips and allows it to not be center anymore...what am i missing? here is what i have, everything just like yours (i think) except for attatchment of the steering rack./

@ stefan_betula_pendula have you noticed gear slipping/clicking under high torque? ie trying to climb small obsticles?
-
stefan_betula_pendula bravo on the 2 speed gear box design! i was just messing around with the idea and used something similar to yours, but used a motor out of the 9398 crawler...it woks, but not that well...i will be upgrading to the xl motor soon....Great ideas!!!
-
i didnt like that way much, thanks for trying my way tho. i will be leaving the motor in the cab tho and using it for something else.

here is my steering solution, just used the new steering servo. removed a few beams and tada!! it works great, even when the model is not moving. Even has full suspension travel like before.. only problem i need to fix is that the front axle assy is one stud further to the front and rubs when turning when the crane is attached to the front.
