the firefighting game: the true story!
Hobbes replied to snefroe's topic in LEGO Events and User Groups
Actually we were pretty good and we hit the targets with our water cannons best - unfortunately that doesn't count squat, we could've sat there and had a picknick instead. We just missed the sirene to get back into the car and left last and never caught up. So, in the first 2/3 of the game we were best. I can bring tens of thousands of park visitors, who franatically cheered us, as witnesses if necessary. This account, of course, is not biased at all. -
THE OLD Official Eurobricks Straightshooters List
Hobbes replied to The Middleman's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
Two event trades: * snefroe1 for a MISB 1254 trade * copmike for the food Thanks again, guys :-) -
Sounds great. I just started sorting all my bricks yesterday so I can finally start building my layout. I've finished my setup (i.e. tables) but haven't started building yet. I got 4512 last christmas from Mrs Hobbes *wub* When I saw it for the first time a couple of years back I didn't really like it, but the more often I saw it the better it looked somehow. And then there was a sale and I wanted it - and got it ;-) PS: I just noticed that you live in Bristol - I was in Bath last Thursday ;-)

Welcome to EB, UltraPrime. Aaaah, yes, finally a new member who is into the classic lines of LEGO ;-) Which train do you have? Do you rather collect/have the old Town sets (1980s and early 1990s) or the newer (World)City sets? I know you said "City" but that could have been a generalisation... Boy, did that question sound like Phes?!...

Official Statement from Lego re. 9V Trains
Hobbes replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Umm... that's the same statement that's being discussed here ;-) -
No, not another thread asking for more or why there are so few. A thread about how to make them, ideas by 1000steine member mijasper: More pictures in his gallery (click image). I especially like his Michael Jackson :-D Good thing I didn't throw away my old MF torsos :'-)

Funny you say that. I think we all agree. Heck, even LEGO employees explain it that way! Yet, what does TLC do? They bring out 7344 (oddly enough at a reasonable price)...

I have to agree with what was said about trains not being that popular anymore. Back in the day (meaning 70s and 80s, when I grew up) trains had a certain fascination and (especially) boys were happy when they found a model train under the christmas tree. We didn't have much distraction, though. No video games, no computers or the like (and if just a few). Even TV wasn't that big a competition. Nowadays a train is... just a train. I grew up across my home town's train station, my grandfather and dad worked for our federal railway (today it isn't federal anymore, which added to its unattractiveness), trains were part of our life. Back then I knew every engine model that existed by heart and could distinguish them by their headlights at night! Today? I still like trains, but even to me they've lost some touch. Lots of new engine models - and I don't know any of 'em. I visited Hamburg's "Miniaturwunderland" a month ago, the world's largest model train layout. The layout was very cool, it had a few very nice touches, but I noticed that the most uninteresting part was - the trains... With all the distractions and competition that exist today I can believe that model trains are not popular with kids anymore, as hard as this might be. On the other hand model trains are more popular than ever with - dads (recent European study). How come? Well, I dunno but I guess those dads are us, those who grew up liking trains. Unfortunately we're not the target group for toy companies...

It doesn't "use" it literally. It's a bot that is programmed to crawl all accessible areas of a board. And as a member (human or not) PMs are accessible. So it crawls there, too.

That's how ;-)

Yes, it is, with a "built-in" news reader. In case you're interested: What is Usenet? Stein actually means rock. In this case, though, it's short for Baustein, which means brick. Steine is the plural, so 1000steine means 1000bricks. hth :-)

Rumor had it the cast would return for a movie. Turned out to be just that - a rumor. As for the actors, Matthew Perry played numerous roles, some of them next to Friends. So did Cox, although not that successful...

The original creators quit and are handing over everything to someone else. The decision was made recently after some tumultuous time and I guess they're in the middle of the transition now and pretty busy...

Technic - "old" vs "new"
Hobbes replied to Hobbes's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
According to Jan Beyer, the reasons to introduce studless Technic were a wider range of functionality, more stability (especially with bigger and more utilized models), and its "module size" of 8x8x8 is more intuitional to children than the "old awry" Technic (whatever that means). I had this issue in a used 8435 4WD I got on ebay. A few studded Technic beams were a different blue than the studless beams. You can only see it at close range, not when it's on the shelf. I dunno if that's true for a new 4WD set, but it's annoying anyways: blue isn't just blue anymore... -
Oh, indeed, it is secret... so many secret places... 8-
