Opening sealed antique sets - wonderful or painful ?
HawkLord replied to drdavewatford's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Collectors of all types of items tend to buy two of everything just to be safe. I collect Hot Toys 1:6 scale figures and have been trying to get two of each one - not to flip, just as a back-up. I hate the idea of one of the display figures falling off a shelf or something and breaking years from now, so having one in reserve means that I have some spare parts if need be. With Legos, it's the same concept - I have back-up sets unopened in case something happens. These sets tend to go up in price as they get retired and having a reserve now means I won't have to worry about mark-up prices in the future. Plus, with sets like LOTR, I army-build. I don't have the space for displaying all of them now, but eventually I will. Till then, they stay boxed. -
Well, you're in luck with the Alderwood Mall Lego store Grand Opening next weekend. It's in Lynnwood, which is about 10-15 miles north of Seattle. Should be pretty interesting, as it's not very often one gets to go to a store Grand Opening.

Oh, I definitely agree with that. I would never want Lego to do away with the yellows completely.

Wow, comments like "Lego is racist" are just as amazingly bad as "ADHD is bigger than AIDS". As for yellow being no race, it's really more like yellow is one race. I prefer the diversity in race with the theme sets - it's realistic and illustrates to collectors and children alike the differences there are in the world. Instead of using yellow to impersonate a race or culture, skin toned pieces further identify those cultures. Look at the recent CMF Series 7 figures of the Aztec Warrior and Bagpiper - wouldn't it be more authentic to have varing skin tones to further demonstrate their regional backgrounds. Why just have the race of "yellows" essentially pretending to be every race out there when Lego can actually make those races?

LEGO Collectable Minifgures Series 8 Rumours & Discussion
HawkLord replied to Piranha's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Whereas your other ideas are great, I think I like this one the most because I could use these figures as generic Marvel SHIELD agents. -
I honestly think we may not see anything in the LOTR/Hobbit line till during SDCC. I know alot of other licensors have had to hold back on previewing their Hobbit material till closer to the Hobbit movie and SDCC seems like the best time to at least get prelim or teaser pics.

Not to spoil anything, but I think with some of the rumored content of The Dark Kight Rises, it's unlikely that lego will make a set from the movie. I think they'll have more luck with sets from the comics.

One of the current Marvel sets actually has a Magneto, as well Wolverine, and Deadpool. As for more licensed sets? That's always a good decision to me. So far, their choices for licensed themes this year have sold well - Marvel, DC, and LOTR are all moving in my area. Anything that helps them make money and create more unique pieces is a win-win in my book.

I'm going to go ahead and say that's the best diorama I have seen.

Show Your Army, Navy, and Collection Display
HawkLord replied to BillytheKid's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Not to go off-topic, but those are Masterpiece Transformers made by Takara/Tomy - basically collector-level Transformers that are much more accurate, detailed, and involved. Looks like Prime (not sure which version), Grimlock, and two copies of Rodimus (which can be displayed as Hot Rod). There's also what looks like a third-party Huffer there, too. -
What're your favorite and least favorite Star Wars minifigures?
HawkLord replied to Darthking623's topic in LEGO Star Wars
My answers are probably on the boring side, but I'd go with... Hoth Luke: Great printing, very recognizable, very important scene. Darth Vader: Still great in every set he comes out in. Qui-Gon: One of my favorite characters. -
Ok, cool. I think at this point I'll just go Saturday and Sunday around 9:30-ish and take my chances. Definitely not going to flip these as they're for my personal collection, but I had thought the minifigures were the most valueable ones.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 6 Discussion
HawkLord replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Just happened to hit a local Walmart that looked like it had just put out a side-wing of Series 6. I ended up adding eight more Grey Aliens to the horde. -
Really superb!

Reminds me of something out of Warhammer Fantasy Battles; especially that awesome banner. Very nicely done - looks great!

Suddenly losing all interest in a whole theme?
HawkLord replied to purpleparadox's topic in General LEGO Discussion
For me to some degree it might have to be Star Wars. The main reasons why would be other great licensed sets (LOTR, Marvel, DC) and just too many Star wars Clone Wars or Expanded Universe sets that I've never even heard of. Initially, when I got into Lego in my adulthood (had lots of them when I was a kid), I only went after Star Wars sets and tried to avoid all the other Lego lines. I made the excuse that the Star Wars Legos were part of my Star Wars collecting. Meaning, I was a Star Wars collector who happened to buy Legos. Now that Lego has fully won me over that's changed and I'm a Lego collector who, among other licenses, buys Star Wars sets. -
The first set I can remember from when I was younger was the Space Set 6802 Space Probe Vehicle. It wasn't much, but I'm positive I built nearly every possible combination with those bricks. That little rover was great and the bot was perfectly simplistic. Definitely a 5/5.

LEGO Collectable Minifgures Series 8 Rumours & Discussion

I was wondering the exact same thing. It has an orange circle as the background, just like the Pirate. It also seems to have a possible hairpiece and rod, spear, or sword. It looks blacked-out, so maybe it's a teaser image. -
Great theme idea!

Thanks for posting that. It seems like the shirt isn't that popluar, but the mini Lego store set and minifigure set are. I'm debating on which day to go or if I want to go all three days. It'll probably be the only time I'll ever get a chance to go to a store grand opening, but I would just as soon pass if it means I'd have to get there hours in advance.

Actually, Hasbro took the Fighter Pods design from the popular Squinkie toys that are out right now. Really, neither Fighter Pods nor Squinkies can be looked at as an idea taken from Lego. Fighter Pods are non-poseable figures that exists in a game environment. Lego minifigures are poseable figures that exist in a construction block building environment. Collectible, small figures have always been around.

Huge thanks for posting that info. I can't jump on those right now (even though I'd like to), but those are some pretty great deals on some awesome sets.

That figure has some great printing. Edit: Now that I see it rotated, does it looks like there's another pic just below it? Is that another minifigure or something else entirely? -
My Lego SW collection is probably only worth less than $500. Which is perfect for me, as I don't have the space or finances to buy everything that comes out. Plus, there was/is Harry Potter, CMF, and now LOTR competing for my Lego funds. In fact, I might skip some of the SW summer sets in favor of getting extra LOTR sets.
