Mecabricks to Blender Template
Scrubs replied to Scrubs's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hello, Did you export this model from Mecabricks? I am asking because the trees and a lot of other parts I see in your model are not available in Mecabricks. My script is made to be easy to use with models exported from the website as per the video tutorial. Otherwise, you will need to do some work before running the script.- 32 replies

Mecabricks website is down?
Scrubs replied to Jdhfh's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Yep, it wasn't target at mecabricks but to one of their clusters of servers where mecabricks happened to be. -
Mecabricks website is down?
Scrubs replied to Jdhfh's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hello, It was an issue with the host company (OVH). It did last for a couple of hours, but it looks like they sorted it out now and it is back to normal. This was only an issue on their servers access but not on the servers themselves. Anyway, I have a weekly backup system in place on the top of OVH backup if one day it goes really wrong. Edit: My understanding is that they had to fight a strong DDoS attack. -
Photoreal LEGO Rendering
Scrubs replied to Renderbricks's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I finally decided to slowly make my way through the minifig body parts to make Batman. Here is the helmet. I added some fingerprints and dust. Batman Helmet v2 by Nicolas Jarraud, on Flickr -
Photoreal LEGO Rendering

Here is my latest work using Blender. I exported the minifig hand from Mecabricks and reworked it so that I could use a subdiv modifier. I drew multiple displacement texture that I added on the top of my normal solid material set up. Minifigure Hand by Nicolas Jarraud, on Flickr -

Hello and thank you :-) Yes, it is the big project that I want to complete in 2016. I have the workflow but now I need to make it happen - meaning find the time to write 1000s line of code. -
I feel dumb when I read this kind of paper...

LDD colors naming vs. real bricks colors
Scrubs replied to ___'s topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
If it can help, I spend hours last year making this conversion table with name and colour values from multiple sources. -
[Software] MecaBricks - Online Design Tool

LDD import has been added to the workshop. Just upload you .lxf file and it will be converted to Mecabricks format! Parts that are not yet available are ignored for the moment. Thanks to Sim and wlange for adding the conversion data for all the mecabricks parts. -
My post was written with some humour inside ;-) The 2 events are actually not related. It is just because the mecabricks community was asking for this feature a bit louder in the last few weeks. I am not going to develop again on what I think is going to happen to LDD. There have been enough things said in other topics.
-
Hello, With the bad news of LDD not being updated anymore I thought that it was a good timing to start developing an importer for mecabricks. No your collection of lxf files is not going to catch the dust in a dark corner of you hard drive. You might be able soon to upload all of them on mecabricks to keep working on them with the latest parts that are not going to be added to ldd ;-)

Yep I did not detailed everything but they are heaps of of other little details to figure out that it is a render - bevels, spacing, glitches, materials, etc. It's not all LEGO sets that are rendered like this but I noticed quite a few on brickset these last couple of years.
-
The photo linked above is definitely a render made with high resolution part model maybe coming from their cad software (catia or others). Trust me, I know how to recognise it :-) lighting fixture reflection that you might see comes from the hdr image used for the environment lighting. About LDD, I don't think they will ever open the software but not for the reason stated above. Parts from LDD can already be exported but they are of no use on a manufacturing point of view. Models are very low resolution and a rough approximation of real parts. I don't want to scare the fans but unless TLG is slowly working on a brand new version of the software it really looks like LDD is gone...

You can find some more information about the Blender template here http://www.mecabricks.com/en/forum/category/7 Have a look at the settings - It can probably be improved as I am not a Blender Guru, but it has been a long time that I haven't been annoyed by the fireflies (even with dark scenes) without compromising on the rendering time. Cycles is improved with every new version of Blender and works pretty well nowadays.
-
Try harder :-) I can tell you for sure that Blender is working pretty well on macos. Have a look at this forum for more information about how to use it to render models made with mecabricks http://www.mecabricks.com/en/forum/category/7

Hello, Just a short answer for now as i am with my phone. Mecabricks has a system to attach bricks properly. It uses the points that appear when you move your mouse over a part. You can check this video I made: You can also select multiple part by holding the control key and clicking parts. You can find more information in this thread: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69050

Hello, I'm starting a little contest on Mecabricks where you could win set 75901 - Scooby-Doo Mystery Plane Adventures. For that, you need to build an alternative digital model with the parts contained in set 75901. I made a template on Mecabricks that contains all the bricks that you could use. Simply open it in the workshop and start building. Entries shall be received before 31 October 2015 to be considered. For more information check this page. Thanks to Superkalle for allowing me to announce the contest on eurobricks.

3D scan of LEGO pieces
Scrubs replied to Scrubs's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hello, So I bought the scanner from matterandform. They seem to have a good support and communication channel. Besides, I wanted a native solution for Macos. For everything else, I use Blender. This free tool is awesome and passed the frustration of the interface, it is a pleasure to use. A week ago I did not know anything about sculpting or retopology. Simpson head pieces would probably work fine but I don't own any myself. -
Hello, I don't think that this is a subject that is discussed too much here but I think that it could be interesting to start a new thread to share my experience. When browsing the web a few weeks ago I found the article about a home made scanner from the master of LDraw AKA philo. Not having his knowledge or the time to learn the technic behind the scene I decided to have a look at the off the self scanners. Having played a bit with industrial ones, I was a bit scared of the result I would get with more affordable ones but I still decided to go ahead. I received mine last week and after a few days of trial, I'm pretty happy even if I still have a lot to explore and learn! I thought it would be interesting to share my experience. Please find below the workflow I used for the first few pieces that I added to mecabricks. The mesh resulting of the point cloud is very noisy but I did it on purpose as small details are not smoothed away. You have to keep in mind that LEGO parts are very small. This helmet is only 14mm high!
