It really depends on the person. Me, I enjoy buying older sets that I grew up with, but given the choice I'd rather get my hands on the new sets coming out now. I don't generally sell my sets unless I need to make room for more, or I have some sets that I don't really care for. I'm gonna sell some of my SP1 sets soon. Basically there is no "general concensus", do whatever you will.

Yeah, and human vehicles that are actually somewhat decent... the only cool human vehicle in that theme was the helicopter.

One Thousand Fathoms / Burpy
Algernon replied to SirNadroj's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Excellent job on that deepsea creature, it looks fantastic. Those are way more clear elements than I've ever owned. If only Aqua Raiders had been like that... there's a lot of mystery in the deep! The second one is kind of trippy. Looks like something I'd see after a few beers. -
I think that new waves for Pirates and Space Police will be a given, since most themes are given two waves or more. I also think Elves are likely. However, I think we will probably have to kiss goodbye to Agents and Power Miners. They had their obligatory two waves, and LEGO never keeps them alive unless they're really selling enough to merit it. And I doubt that they did well enough to merit another year, though I don't think they sold poorly. Star Wars will be the usual dirge. City will be pretty normal too. LEGO's two best selling themes don't seem to change much. Indiana Jones will likely continue. Bionicle will continue of course, but I haven't been keeping up with the convoluted storyline so I have no idea what to expect. New themes as well... we know that Disney will be showing up. I'm not terribly excited for those. In terms of other new themes, who knows what LEGO's cooked up this time?? I can only hope we get some gritty, realistic theme like Rock Raiders and Dino Attack to replace Power Miners. But who knows?

I like that too, although I doubt that was intentional.
-
QFT I liked Dino Attack but it had it's problems.
-
I hope Space Police gets a second wave. Every good theme deserves one!

Space Police and Agents will be my two big purchases this summer... specifically, Robo Attack. Do we have any prices yet?
-
This statement is incorrect. Financially it's LEGO's best selling theme, but LEGO's heart and soul lies with creativity and imagination, two things that seem rather uninvolved with re-creating scenes from movies of George Lucas's imagining.
-
I quite agree.
-
Pirates, obviously. LEGO is supposed to be about creativity and imagination, not rebuilding someone else's idea. Original themes FTW!
-
I, for one, dislike the new names.
-
Though I agree that all of those themes would be awesome in updated, LEGO will probably have to group all those requests into "re-release old sets". Might as well just keep it to one option.

Wow, the suggestion adding bit changes completely every few minutes.

Cool, I filled it out. I'm glad they're doing surveys like these.

What education do I need to become a LEGO designer?
Algernon replied to Dr.SupaNova's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Like any job in a creative field, you'll have to know how to build what LEGO wants you too. And LEGO wants you to build something that will sell. This means you'll have to cram your beloved creation full of flick-fire missiles and stickers. One of the most important skills that you can learn, and is applicable to pretty much and artistic job, is the ability to give a client what they're looking for, even if you don't like it. Suppose LEGO Futuron says that a Dino Attack 2 would sell well in 2018. Well, it's time to roll out the concept art and give your boss something he thinks will appeal to kids. Your models will be tested for their play factor and you'll have to change many things before it's done. LEGO will probably care more about structural integrity and playability than they will about aesthetics. -

Algernon replied to Dr.SupaNova's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Depends on what kind of LEGO Designer you want to be. At LEGO Futuron they examine marketing trends to determine what kind of new theme will sell in the future. You'll have to know how to do that if you want to work for Futuron. LEGOLAND designers know about sculpture and have degrees in the fine arts. The graphic designers who draw the designs for the minifigs and stickers are simply graphic designers. There's more than one way to get into the LEGO company. -
Bleh. I hate comparing LEGO sets to the licensed counterpart. The LEGO set always looks so clunky for the comparison. This is why I tend to dabble in original themes.
-
It would be nice if we had something to talk about. Seems like Space Police news has run dry... there's only one set we haven't seen in detail yet. I have a hunch, though, that these sets will start trickling out soon, and once that happens we'll get reviews, magazine articles, etc. I'm hopeful we'll see a second wave. Let's hope that the theme does well in sales, to encourage LEGO to make more original Space themes like this!

That Pirate Tank has got to be the best-looking Star Wars set I've seen in a long time. I'm actually considering getting this one... and I'm normally totally against Star Wars. The design is just so attractive, and those pirate minifigs could be perfect for some alien themes... I sure hope it's not overpriced, but it will be.

My status should clearly disqualify the validity of your accusation. Good day, sir. Oh, are we supposed to be talking about Space Police?

The Brick Testament - When God Attacks
Algernon replied to Brendan Powell Smith's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
The construction is great, however I'm having trouble getting behind it as a project. I'm agnostic, so it really just seems like disturbing depictions of human suffering to me. Also the girl in the McDonald's scene strongly reminds me of my girlfriend. I have to admit though, some very creative techniques here. Nice job. -
