Unfortunately, history suggests none of that will happen :( Here is how this normally goes with a convention reveal (also applies to non-modular reveals like the Chinese sets last month): No notice is given The convention doors open and Lego has the set(s) on display on the convention floor Random folks take photos that begin circulating on social media and eventually some websites post them Hours later Lego sends out a press release For non-convention reveals we just get a press release. During "Covid" Lego selectively experimented with livestreams but they appear to have dropped that strategy (maybe the summer stream will continue?). TLG has teased a small number of reveals on Instagram over the last 2ish years so that may happen. -

I'm not sure we have had any crazy theories...until now: 10am EST in the United States) on Saturday, December 10, the LEGO Group’s official Instagram account will be taken over by a group of children. Under the hashtag, #LEGOTakeover. -

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

"City" was one of three original themes. Technically it was called Legoland Town in 1978 and TLG has modified the name several times. The last time the "City" name changed was in 2005. The mainline modulars have appeared under different names including "Creator" "Expert" "18+" and "Icons". Over the last two years TLG has introduced 11 sets that are Modular. These modulars have appeared across many themes including: Chinese New Year, Ninjago, Marvel, Ideas and the BrickLink Designer Program. TLG has also sold several other sets recently that while not technically modulars can be easily modified to fit that system. I wouldn't be concerned about the modular line as the company has widely embraced the system. -

An announcement at Singapore Comic Con also makes sense for a few reasons: -Singapore is TLG's headquarters for the Asia Pacific region -TLG has strong ties with the Marina Bay Sands hotel which is hosting Singapore Comic Con -

Saturday is an unusual day to announce products....BUT Lego has announced products on a Saturday in December several times during the last few years. These Dec Sat announcements seem to always correspond with conventions/toy fairs in Asia. This coming weekend is the large Singapore Comic Con. -
The Van and the grocery store appear to be a limited release pricing test. Lego historically doesn't sell limited edition products but they tried it here. Both sets for example will have had a lifespan of 5 months in the US. Lego priced them widely different in certain regions for example the Van in the US was more than double the price in some European markets. Both these products are now deeply discounted in the US (i.e. they didn't sell). Lego is trying lots of pricing tests but these two stood out the most.

Monday, Dec 5th is likely the announcement date based on recent history. -

If an announcement happens in December anything after the 11th becomes unlikely. The probability of leaks soar once a set starts shipping to stores. High volume sets typically begin heading to stores two weeks before launch but earlier at years end. Stores need to be restocked after the busiest sales period + Lego needs to deliver a large number of Jan 1 releases to stores. This has proven to be impossible BTW which is why it is common to see Lego shelves mostly empty for several weeks into the new year. Some years Lego retail stores have started selling Jan 1 sets a week or two earlier and other years they have let the shelves sit empty(last year). Last Modular was announced on Monday Dec 6th. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Piece count is a meaningless data point and should be banned from discussions. Lego modulars have suffered from extreme shrinkflation in recent years. For example: The Bookshop has 2504 pieces and is missing roughly 30% of the build including the books. The Grand Emporium has 2182 prices and is a full build with roughly 40% more plastic than The Bookshop. Most of the recent modulars were clearly cut down after being designed and suffer from obvious omissions. The Bookshop is an extreme example but The Police Station and Hotel both suffer from this as well. The amount of plastic, while not a perfect data point is at least helpful. Pretending that "piece count" is a valuable metric is like comparing revenue numbers from 20 years apart (inflation makes the comparison a joke). -

Was 60278 Crook’s Hideout Raid the set that hinted at an upcoming museum(possibly 2023 modular) set? I can't find the museum hint anywhere in the current sets. Help!

I own all the modulars. The Downtown Diner is hands down the best. The Diner is Mike Psiaki, the greatest designer Lego has ever had(sorry Jamie) at the top of his game. I disagree however that it's a large departure from the previous modulars. It's better in its use of color, design language and building techniques but stylistically it fits right in with the rest of the line. The Diners uses negative space in the same way as the Parisian and Detectives office. A bona fide Art Deco modular would be fantastic! Have you seen the Lego Ideas Car wash? https://ideas.lego.com/projects/8999c95a-f144-4dce-9e69-651ae3b5f9bb You are correct. The early modulars are mostly pretty bad. Green Grocer, Pet shop and Cafe corner are all awful. The exterior of Town Hall holds up well and the Cinema isn't to bad... but the interiors for everything pre-Parisian are laughable. -

Thanks for the link! I love how the ground floor was modified...it's better than my idea. I might play around with that "gap" idea"...I need to see it in person honestly. The building is still sealed with the "gaps" but I understand the objection. I picked up three copies because I want to play around with this Moc idea: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-84870/EliteLongbowman7/downtown-garage/#details It's not perfect but I feel that a larger footprint can help the design "breath". -

Oooo If you come across that mod I would love to see it! The exterior of the Garage is strikingly similar to several American downtown baseball stadiums including Oracle Park (San Francisco) and Coors Field (Denver). I think the garage does a great job of capturing that aesthetic but as you say it is an "inorganic" look. -

I agree 100% with that commentary. The Garage, Bookshop and Police Station all suffer on the interior. The lack of detail and cutting back the size of the interior(Bookshop & Police station) I assume is to keep costs down. The bookshop is a complete joke on the inside. The previous five modulars had great interiors that never felt like they cut corners on anything. -

It's a good set...the problem is that's not on the level of the Parisian through Diner. The sets after the Diner just haven't been as good as that five year run and that's a high bar. -

Lego teased the modular last year about 48 hours before the announcement. So it's reasonable to expect a teaser in a couple weeks assuming an announcement roughly two weeks before Jan 1. Last years modular teaser: https://www.picklebricks.com/post/the-lego-group-teases-2021-modular-building -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Some of that used to be true...but Lego has made some changes. My understanding is that Lego no longer ships D2C sets to stores before announcements. Press releases are no longer given out early which is why you will see reviews posted before press releases(always odd to see). They have heightened security at places that used to cause leaks. They have narrowed the outlets that receive sets early and finally they delay the shipping of D2C sets to outside retailers to prevent leaks. Sets that are sent to outside retailers early such as CMF's are difficult to control. Same goes for licensed D2C sets. For example there is a good chance the Star Wars leaks we get are from folks working at Disney. -

Previous Modular announcement dates: Nov 29, 2020 (as part of a Black Friday stream promoting other D2C sets) Dec 6, 2019 Dec 3, 2018 Nov 30 2017 (the 2018 or 2019 reveal coincided with an Asian toy fair...per my faulty memory) -

I agree with what you said about the reindeer and would add that the reindeer isn't white...it's an off-white/gray color that Lego doesn't produce. Maybe it's a new color for 2022? Sand gray? Sand white? -

I assume it's a combination of announcements and promotions. We are expecting at least one more Christmas GWP, probably a double VIP points day, Jan 1 promo and another promo day for leftover GWP sets... announcements for Jan 1 sets for Star Wars, expert(modular), ideas(Sonic), etc.. Plus some PR announcements probably centered on donating Lego for the holidays and on environmental progress(new paper bags/PAB packaging). -

Some of the earlier modulars were not released in Jan. Fire Brigade in September, Palace Cinema was March, Pet shop was May. I don't recall when the announcements were. More and more companies are making announcements roughly two weeks prior to product launches and Lego just seems to be following that trend. The impression I received was the modular announcement was a result of this shift. -

Lego employee. I was also told many of 2021's product announcements had been planned for two weeks prior to release but were announced sooner because of leaks(implying the same could happen here).
