  1. Folks, I am really mathematically challenged so I am asking a favor. Is there any way to get a 6:11 ratio with lego gears? Not possible with any single combinations, but perhaps with a series of them it could be done. I have a tough time understanding how gear ratios compound and how to use that to solve this problem.
  2. Good observation.. Not baseless. I believe the engines could be fixed easily with a 2L cam piece. It would be nice for 1/2 stud offsets and it would certainly make the engines run well. If you think about it.. Piston heads used to be those 2x2 blocks. Now they're about 1.25 studs wide.. 1 stud is only the next logical step!
  3. Seems so obvious now, thank you. I was misremembering previous "illegal connections" I had seen before.
  4. Yes, that one precisely. I was under the impression that since the pins are not in "snap", they don't have room for the ends to expand back and therefore will lose their tensile strength from being compressed if it's left for a long period of time.
  5. Hah, interesting to learn so much about 24t gears.. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Semi related - how much do you all care about "illegal" connections? When I built 42082 I was quite taken aback by the cab assembly which included quite a few pins that were only pushed through a single half width beam. If TLG doesn't care to change this in their official models, does that mean it's not such a big deal? I was always under the impression it damaged pieces (particularly pins) when a model is displayed for long periods of time. Again, I'm surprised to see it in an official set.
  6. Thanks for reminding me about that part. It will be helpful should I decide to bite the bullet on price. Luckily, there is another version of omniwheels I have made using the 120 degree axle connectors. Not nearly as strong, but enough for my purposes. And much more affordable. Now that you mention it, I did notice a certain section of 42082 that I believe wouldn't be possible with the old gears.. I see that both have their own purpose. It seems that overall, the new gears are better for most applications. I'm not sure how it would be considered cheating! I do think BL should have a separate entry, though. The difference is significant.
  7. Thank you! That connector part I forgot about, I'll probably get one of those. Much appreciated. Re: backlash, that makes sense. the teeth on the original mold do seem a bit long and slender.
  8. When and why did LEGO change the teeth on 24 tooth gears..!? There's a MOC I'm working on at the moment that actually works far more smoothly with the older gears. Interestingly, bricklink doesn't have a separate entry. Unrelated, but what are some common 60 or 120 degree parts? I have a lot of the studded rotor pieces and I might try to get my hands on some of the studless technic ones. Are there any connectors I could use? I'm trying to make something that branches out in three directions but has space in the center (instead of, for example., the axle hole the rotor pieces have).
  9. Oh my goodness, this is.. Unreal. I'm amazed. The part usage all around is fantastic, and the detail on every bit is stunning. Always loved fabuland but this is next level.
  10. Thanks, all. I think I'm going to pick up 42055, 42082, and the Arocs. See how I feel after that. I already have a smallish collection of parts so those three might be enough for my purposes. By the way, is there a way to post in a thread here without bumping it? At the same time that I'm happy to express my gratitude, I do realize now that this thread is a bit spammy (thank you Rudivdk for redirecting me to the proper thread). Anyway, I'll certainly refrain from making any other threads like these. Mods, please close this if possible. Thank you:)
  11. Hello all, I did quite a bit of exploration into Technic in around 2013-2014, lots of browsing Eurobricks, buying parts and a few sets, etc. It is all so far behind me that I decided to just make a new account. But as it's been 6-7 years almost, I feel I've fallen behind on the latest and greatest in terms of Technic sets and parts. Having looked over just a few recent threads, I'm pretty overwhelmed by the quantity of new pieces and sets. Many of them look very exciting to use. In a way, I could go about getting them by simply ordering them from bricklink.. but I think I'd be missing out, not seeing the way they're used in sets (plus I'd surely miss quite a few, and it would take lots of searching through here.) So my idea was to simply buy a few of the most important sets from the past five or six years, and wanted to know - which ones do you all deem to be most essential for that purpose? Really excited to be back into Technic. Still makes me giddy even after years of hiatus. :)
