  1. Those two sets only needed one thousand votes as they were Japan only right? This one's got my support either way, though I did notice it used one of those micro motors... I wonder how TLG would get around that
  2. That is quite an ingenious MOC, excellent part use
  3. Well, I feel really young now My first Technic set was the Mountain Rambler from 1997... I quite well remember getting it for my 6th birthday, sitting on the living room floor and building it while the sun shone outside... I know it's a relatively small set by Technic standards but back then it was huge to me That was followed by the Forklift Truck from 1998... and to be honest, I didn't have much else in the way of Technic after, though not from want of trying, and I did have a couple of other small sets, but it's those two that are pretty much responsible for steering me into Technic.
  4. I also tend to spread out buying sets so that I don't get bored waiting... like, maybe 1 large set every few months with some smaller sets in between... and if I get bored, I just build the B-models, or some small MOCs (if I have time). As it goes, it's probably best that this time of year is the lull as University work becomes much more demanding until May, then I've got a couple of months in which I can MOC until the 2H sets come out And of course the money saved over this time means I can afford to go to a festival in the summer as well as buying some of the larger sets... ah, the bane of being a student with a cripplingly small income
  5. It does seem like a pretty decent set to me, especially in terms of price. Just that nobody's done a photo review yet; there are a fair few sets that haven't got one... maybe you could do one?
  6. Somebody pointed this set out in one of the other threads and I think it is probably a very good one to ponder regarding what actually makes something Technic: 4958 is marketed as a Creator set, the set's theme (as in, subject matter) is definitely creator, and its functions are not typically Technic, but it uses motors, gears and IR control to drive it; so should it be considered Technic? I would certainly say so... but then, if those Technic Star Wars sets aren't really Technic... I guess it comes down to the individual sets themselves at the end of the day...
  7. I just recently had the same conundrum, and I bought the Supercar. Part of me kinda wishes I'd bought the Logging truck, but the Car is still a very good set, so it pretty much comes down to what you want in the set. Also, there is a thread somewhere in the Technic forum for asking for help deciding on which set to buy, just so you know
  8. To be perfectly honest, you've got to be looking through a plane of rose-tinted nostalgia to think that modern Technic is not as complex as the sets of the so-called "Golden Age". Don't get me wrong, some of those sets are still amongst the best TLG have done, but that's not to say modern sets couldn't be placed anywhere up there. Could you have built 8110 with the parts available in the early 90's? I don't think so. It's not just about gear systems either (which are also generally more complex), but also the structure of the models themselves; beams, pins, angle connectors going in all directions is much more complex than just stacking bricks and plates on top of each other. And for what it's worth, I rather like the gearboxes with multiple outputs (1 motor to 4 functions) Just my $0.02.
  9. I would definitely be buying this one right now - I rather like trucks and heavy equipment - but I just dropped £80 on the Supercar. Ah well, always later
  10. Not sure which of the many 9397 threads to post this in, but the animation is also up on Lego.com. It's really quite a brilliant animation actually, very well done
  11. Check out the drawing/schematic that was posted earlier in this thread, it sort of shows how they work visually. Basically, you connect the pump to the central... erm... connector (I don't actually know what they're called, come to think of it), and you connect the other two holes/connectors to the top and bottom of one of the pneumatic actuators. By pushing the switch from one position to the other, and then pumping, the actuator will extend or retract. I would also recommend you check out some of the instructions for recent pneumatic sets, they show quite well how they work and demonstrate some possible applications
  12. That would be a pump, though as it sounds like the grab bag contains Unimog parts, it might have one of these, which is also a pump, and one that can be motorized at that. If you don't have either of those, you'll need to get one in order to use pneumatics.
  13. They're basically the bags taken from sets and put into a sealed plastic bag with some branding on it. From what I gather they're from sets that have been returned for whatever reason. I've only ever seen them in the Lego store at that Disney thingamajig in Florida, I once got a bag of parts from that Star Wars MTT which had loads of studded Technic beams, very useful as I've only really got studless parts They're also pretty good value, they were about $9 if I recall correctly.
  14. Sounds like you got a grab bag from a Unimog, which is really quite lucky as I've never found any Technic at all in any grab bags I've got before. Do you also have the pump though?
  15. As far as I have noticed, most system sets use black 2L axles, I guess because red would stand out too much in terms of aesthetics. So I would assume that they keep them in production still.
  16. If you can swing for the Flatbed, definitely get that as it's a very well designed set. Otherwise, go for the Backhoe, it's far more interesting than the Extreme Cruiser.
  17. That video is very enlightening, glad to see there's a gearbox for switching functions in the chopper. I imagine there are a couple of other functions not shown... I was expecting the door under the winch to open, and it didn't show off any rotor control for the blade angles (I dunno what it's all called, cyclic control or something?). Also, nice to see we get a 32T double bevel gear again, I haven't had a set with one of those since that mini crane from 2007...
  18. I don't really have a problem with the colour scheme of the body, but I don't know why they had to make the chassis red. It clashes horribly. If they made it grey it would be much better; especially if you can build your own body for it, as grey being neutral you could have almost any colour scheme without such a clash. Also, I'm kind of worried about the B-model for this one. I think it's probably just gonna be an alternative body given what looks like a pretty limited part set...
  19. The video definitely shows off the Off-Roader better than the photo... that colour scheme really looks a mess It also looks like it's gonna be pretty simple mechanically... shame, I prefer models that are nice and complex. It looks like a lot of fun to play with though, so I might pick it up on discount. Still want to see more detailed photos of the chopper, but it's looking very promising.
  20. Can someone tell me if this is the first time a set has not used a linear actuator bracket to mount the large LA? Wonder why they did it that way...
  21. I used to get this, especially when dismantling bigger sets, but when you do it a lot you'll build up a bit of resistance to it. Having said that, I play guitar so my fingers are naturally calloused anyway
  22. I would also recommend 8043 over 8110 simply because of the mind boggling gearbox; it also feels far more intelligently designed than the Unimog which feels a little haphazard (this does not mean it is a bad set).
  23. Thanks Looks pretty complex, and kinda reminds me of the one I built into a MOC last August... I like how it is built as a separate unit then placed in the model, should allow for easy customization (not by me though, I don't have the spare parts ).
  24. So, Huw at Brickset was at the London toy fair, and he has some more information on the two 2H sets (but not the tractor): Linksi So it turns out we ARE getting new motors. Including a servo.
  25. Could we get a few photos of the instructions? Specifically the steps where the gearbox is assembled?
