Birth of a new Lego city [UPDATE #24 Overpass completed! ]
HereWeGoAgain replied to HereWeGoAgain's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks man! I have ordered a bunch of parts through bricklink yesterday to build the 2nd floor of my modular, we'll see how that turns out. Once that's done and I figure out what the roof will look like, I have a section of train track to complete as well as a parking lot (for the future beach) to finish the 1st table of my Lego display. I say "finish" but we all know a lego city is never finished lol...next I'll have to order my next piece of wood for the second table that will host the beach/ocean area. Lots of cool stuff planned for that with a train bridge and the underwater world! -

The 1st floor of the building above is actually 99% done (missing a few glass windows). Forgot to make pictures. I've been working on the second floor of my little modular using LDD this time. It's probably a lot more accomplished than the 1st floor and in a very different style. I'll have to see how the two combine once I actually build it. Worst case I'll make a copy of the 2nd floor for the 1st floor. -
LEGO City 2020 - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion

Thing is the police and fire ones are essentially always the same. There's only so many ways to design a cop car or a police station aimed a kids without going expert like a modular. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
HereWeGoAgain replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
More than that, didn't they say they wanted to stick to some more ancient (50-60s style) buildings? Not sure how an aquarium would fit into this. Again, we've had the FB, I say a police station is a likely candidate. Also they made that contest for a vehicle for the next modular recently no? Either way I don't really care what it'll be, I like modulars so I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with whatever it is. -
Here are some of the next confirmed speed champion sets, dunno if this was posted before. And yes, all 8 studs. I think 8 studs allows Lego to make the cars more like the original counterparts. LEGO City 2020 - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
HereWeGoAgain replied to Digger of Bricks's topic in LEGO Town
Indeed. We're getting a new service station, I'm guessing octan branded, which is always cool. The safari truck is pretty neat! Looks like they revisited the old Legoland one (6672). I wonder what the tuning workshop will look like. And the ice-cream truck is a cool idea, probably will look similar to the pizza delivery van. The city police sets for 2020 are not something I will get personally. I'm really not into police/firefighting stuff, but I guess for kids they are OK. I mean they fulfill the idea of police chasing bad guys. Looking at the pictures on the website above, honestly the truck carrying the helicopter doesn't look all that bad viewed from the side. I do feel though Lego should brand the police sets as their own theme and not as City. City stuff should have one or max 2 sets of any given thing you find in a City. Maybe it would over-complicate things, idk. EDIT: I know this isn't city, but just saw we got the first picks of some 2020 Creator 3-1 sets, that burger monster truck is awesome : https://brickset.com/article/47018/2020-creator-set-images! -
Awesome interior details, way better than the one I did like 2 months ago lol. Really cool service station.

Birth of a new Lego city [UPDATE #24 Overpass completed! ]
HereWeGoAgain replied to HereWeGoAgain's topic in LEGO Town
Hi folks, Time for an update. On the right edge of the first table, I initially thought about putting the Ferris Wheel, but it's too big to fit in there (I have space for some 32x48 stuff only). So I decided I would create my first modular building on a 16x32 baseplate and in front of it, a parking lot on a 32x32 base plate that would then give access to the beach. Here's the progress on the building itself. I'm about half-way through building it, one hour there, one hour here. The first floor has an ice-cream/backery shop and a clothes shop named "SWAG", the sign for it is placed street-side. I find the ice-cream shop a bit empty, might have to add more details in the future. The second floor is still in progress, it hosts a nice appartement with a bathroom, a kitchen, custom door, place to eat, sofa etc. Still have to incorporate an entertainment system (will be wall-mounted in front of the sofa) and finish the bedroom. No clue if I'll do a 2nd floor and if I do, what it'll host. Here's the front of the ice-cream shop where you can order some yummy cones: On the inside of the shop, you can also purchase a various amount of sweet cakes and stuff. There's a large cake sign hanging on the wall: I was kinda low on these yellow/orange tiles and only had 1x6 ones, so I did what I could. I initially planned a mosaic of colors using LLD for the walls, but don't have enough of the bricks I wanted. Might do it in the future to not have such bland tan and white walls in there: In the middle you can access the 1st floor. There are 4 letter boxes on the right of the entrance, some flowers on the left and a fire extinguisher: Here we have the "SWAG" clothes shop, you can buy some cintage "Mtron" t-shirts, trousers etc.: This side of the building hosts the "SWAG" sign. I needed a short name, easy to write with bricks. Figured it was a good one. The condo has nice large rounded windows on each side for maximum view of the future beach! The condo's shower/bathroom. It's a bit cramped, but has everything you need: toilet, shower, a handle for your towel etc.: Then we have the rest of the appartment. I ended up creating a custom door to enter the place. We have a kitchen, a bar/table with some stools, all with a view on the future beach when you take your coffee in the morning (reminds me I need to create a coffee machine...): The other side with the sofa. You can barely see it, but there's a fridge that is made part of the wall next to the shelf with the sword: Next I'll work on the bedroom and I should be able to finish building this 1st floor! That's it for know guys, hope you enjoyed this small update. Cheers -
@pooda bro, look at me. At 34 years old, I'm starting a Lego city after not playing with those bricks for 25 years and I barely have time to build (maybe an hour a day). MOCing is definitely not the easiest thing to do if you are aiming at realism and highly detailed builds. Also the amount of different pieces, colors and techniques can be intimidating to say the least. But like anything, it takes time and practice. LDD is a good friend to have, pinterest as well to look at what others do and get some inspiration. I'm currently working on a 2-3 story building on a 16x32 baseplate. Ground floor has a backery/ice-cream shop and clothes shop named "SWAG", 1st floor has a nice condo, 2nd floor, I don't know yet. Been working on it for like 2 months now. I'll be hones though, if you're just waiting for Lego to create the stuff that you want, that's just not going to happen. Lego is and will always remain a toy company with products that are aimed at kids, not adults (though we have been getting a ton of expert builds lately). And as a construction toy maker, Lego will always encourage childish creativity over adult realism. The biggest issue of all here is that we as adults have lost that childish creativity, and I find it is very difficult to get it back. I encourage you to do MOCs again just for that reason.

Birth of a new Lego city [UPDATE #24 Overpass completed! ]
HereWeGoAgain replied to HereWeGoAgain's topic in LEGO Town
Not a bad idea regarding the PR. I have yet to find the time to build the PR. I will probably build the Ferris Wheel first which is just the right size to fit on the edge of the first table. I'm planning on having it overlook the beach/ocean side. Really looking forward to building that part. Thought about custom printing but seems to complicated/costly. Stickers are probably the way to go. I have sent a request to Lego for a sticker sheet for set 7993, I know they replace sticker sheets free of charge. I don't have the set itself, but worth a shot asking. Anyway, I've had a bit of time to work on the city yesterday. My goal is really to have no "bare studs" on baseplates, or as little as possible. I was wondering what to put in the corner with the curved tracks. I ended up finding that one of the smaller builds of the Temple of Airjitzu (really cool set, although I'm not a big Ninjago fan) fits perfectly in there. I elevated it a bit and added a river that flows underneath it. Sadly I've already ran out of 1x2 clear blue tiles for the water. I have also more or less completed 2 tracks with some detailing. I like the idea of sort of abandonned alleys behind the buildings where things are sort of falling appart. The first piece of white fence is not sitting correctly on purpose, as if the wall it sits on has cracked a bit so it sits at an angle: Finally I have started work on the piece of train tracks at the back of the city where it joins the road. The goal is to create a bridge for the train and a one-way road that will cross over from table 1 to table 3 . Table 2 will sit something like 10-15cms lower and will host the beach/ocean. Essentially like so: [table 1] [table 2] [table 3] -------------------- --------------------- _____________ -

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll try to update as best I can. First objective is to fill this first table. The second table will be in front of the brick bank and placed a few cm below. That's where the beach/ocean will be along with an under water world (one of my favorite themes). There will also be some train/road bridges to cross to the very last table. Any ideas for the gas price stickers? I've seen some on ebay from Australia. Just feels a bit silly to make a sheet of paper travel around the world just for that... Ha! Happy I'm not the only one! -
Birth of a new Lego city [UPDATE #24 Overpass completed! ]
HereWeGoAgain posted a topic in LEGO Town
Hello, So as a followup to this topic where I presented my 1st MOC in a very long time, I've had a bit of time since then to work on my Lego City. It's been hard to make time tbh...there's a ton of work to do, but I added 2 other MOCs already: an Octan gas station and a burger joint (used parts from the firetruck and burger joint set). BTW, if anyone has a good suggestion/source for gas price stickers in 1x4 brick/plate format, would love to hear about it because it's pretty much the only thing I'm missing to complete that gas station. Without further due, here are some pictures. I figured the outdoors people pack was a good fit for the wooden post indicating where the mountain and the city were: I did some tiling of the river that goes along the train tracks. I'll probably detail a camping site here with some trees etc. at some point, don't like just the tent sitting there next to the road. I'm in need for some 8x16 baseplates to finish of the section with the river though. I've also been using L-Gauge instructions for the curved train tracks to make them look nice. Behind the Gas station, I've tried to make it look like an abandonned alley with a broken bike, some masonry bricks etc.. Need to finish off the other side of the track though: Here's the Octan gas station, you can see where I need those price stickers... Made use of 4 large clear panel plates to bring in some light: And we have a small interior with a soda vending machine, some pastry and bread, a large fridge where you can buy milk, cheese etc. as well as a magazine/news paper stand: Next we have the burger shack that is placed right next to the gas station in case you're craving for some fast food (like those angry pirates, I think the chef's a bit scared...). It's got a full interior with the basics and a table outside to sit down: Finally a quick, not really interesting, shot of what is currently "main street" I guess. Just got a bunch of Modulars in there atm: Hope you enjoy. Updates probably won't be very frequent as I'm working on this about an hour a day when I'm lucky :-) PS: for the keen eye, no, these are indeed not official Lego road plates but chinese knockoffs. I know, I know...I got them for cheap in an auction. it's the only thing I allowed myself to put in the city that wasn't real Lego. I simply can't justify to pay 10-15$ or there-abouts for just 2 road plates. I'd rather buy actual sets. Cheers and thanks for checking in. -
Ferris Wheel 10247, worth getting now after retired?
HereWeGoAgain replied to LegoDW's topic in LEGO Town
I was able to get it for relatively cheaply (~200$). Like you, I have way to much Lego and pull the trigger on sets as soon as they are in my price range. TBH though, I think the Ferris Wheel looks better than the carousel in terms of size. Usually (IRL) a FW will be a very tall structure to overlook a city. I like the Carousel but always found it too big for a city layout. So in terms of size, imho the FW looks better than the carousel. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
HereWeGoAgain replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I haven't seen the video yet, but this is actually already the case with the Ninjago city and docks, which aren't part of the city/town line. To me what essentially defines a modular is the fact it has technic pins or1/2 bricks on the side to connect it to others. -

Honestly it means like pretty much every modular is out of the question lol -
How about bringing back some Octan love with gas stations and whatnot. I'm working on my own service station MOC atm. LDD design is done, been building it up for the past few days.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
HereWeGoAgain replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I think some of the city sets should be put in their own lineup. Like the whole space stuff that just came out, it should be its own thing instead of being branded "city". There's definetely plenty of cool jobs that tend to appeal to kids. I know garbage trucks have always been popular, especially in Lego. They should emphasize on that and offer something like a waste treatment facility. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
HereWeGoAgain replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Lol city has some crappy sets and repetitive themes, lets put it out there. But Lego makes police sets and the likes because it's always popular with kids. Let's not forget this is a toy company. As long as police stuff sells well, they will continue making them because their target audience are children, not adults (at least not mainly). However I think a police station in a more adult oriented modular set would be nice for any adult building a city that doesn't want to add a regular "kids" station to their town. -

Honestly a restaurant would be a bit boring. We already have PR and I would consider the Diner as a restaurant as well. I think a police station for instance would compliment the Fire Brigade well. Why not a post office? A school? There are so many themes to choose from. -
For small footprint cities, small brick city Youtube channel has some great ideas, check it out.

Just FYI, if you are in CH you must know Toppreise.ch. They recently redid their website and you can set price alerts very easily now. Spent about 1h setting alerts on almost all sets. Quite useful to pick sets up for relatively cheap. Of course if you set your buy price too low you might never get a price alert for it, but in case of AS I believe I set it to below 210. You can also see the price history which helps setting a good buy in price. -
[MOC] 1st MOC in 25 years - Train tunnel (corner build)
HereWeGoAgain replied to HereWeGoAgain's topic in LEGO Town
So had a bit of time to work on the city. Started prolonging the river on the side of the road. It's just a moc-up for now. I'm thinking I'll go from something "natural" to something more "canal-like", hence the straight line. I'm out of translucent tiles though. It'll all get detailed and textured. In place of the green plate I'm thinking of putting a skate-park or something (have the 3-1 creator set with it) with another little cross-over bridge: The city is more or less a big mess at the moment. I've got a ton of modulars to build to fill it up(PR, AS, AD, BB and DO), just haven't had the time to :( : But I like integrating older sets like the Octan service station. Was a perfect fit with in terms of size for that spot. will have to order replacement stickers for that one though and maybe modernize it a bit: Here's the straight train track in the back of the layout. The 2 curved tracks at the front will then go to a bridge that spans something like 4 baseplates, this is were the ocean/beach part will be, slightly lower than the other tables: I'm trying to do everything in a modular fashion with the tracks. This is what I came up with yesterday evening for a 16x16 curved track portion. Note: I know very little about train signals etc., just wanted to add a bit of details and colors to warn the train driver that an intersection (+ eventually a train station) was comming up after the curve. Detailing curved train balasts is kind of annoying as its difficult to put a tile in the middle portions. Ended up going for a more "used" kinda look: -
Same, it's mostly about nostalgia for me with deep sea. I recently picked up an old 6560, used and built but complete with box and instructions. As a kid I had 6559, countless hours of fun with that one! In the more recent wave, 60095 is probably one of the best city sets I have seen in a while. Yeah a post office would just make sense for a city, along with a pizzeria. I mean how cool was this one: https://brickset.com/sets/6350-1/Pizza-To-Go lol. Mind you we did get Al's Pizza in the modular line.
