LEGO Monkie Kid 2020
Legoanonymous replied to Classic_Spaceman's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
This seems like an odd situation. When Lego releases a Video Game licence, it usually has to do with popularity, like how the Overwatch championship inspired the theme. Unless you count Mario Maker 2, Lego has no real reason to make a Mario theme right now. I only think that Lego released this set to bridge Lego and technology together. So if we are going to see a proper minifigure lineup of sets, a new game is coming up, or it will be in 2021. Back to Monkey Kid, more and more non licenced themes are getting a greater technological presence. I remember an old Leaf rumor saying that it was building off of Hidden Side's AR capabilities. By looking at the Mario commercial, and the fact Mario is a video game, Lego probably didn't give Super Mario an AR feature. Keep in mind that while this is a rumor, Monkey Kid would have to have an app or online presence in order to do well with kids. Depending on if this Mario "set " is a one - off like the Stranger Things house, Monkey Kid could be a "big bang" theme. I just don't see Mario or even contemporary Hidden Side filling this role for good. That, or Monkey Kid is the first publicly known canceled theme since Cybots. -

Nothing is confirmed. I hope so, but if they were, I would expect at least a teaser soon. -

They seem to be from the same time period. They just seem like they are from different countries. The original Monster Fighters' characters seemed to be from the end of the Victorian Era, which roughly translate to the "wild west" time period. You could argue that since more American looking characters like Jack McHammer or even Frank Rock have so many qualities that wouldn't appear in that time period (let alone place) that Vaughn G. Jackson could fit in. I guess being old has its advantages. -

I ment that is what he looked and seemed like, not what he actually was. -

Remember, we are getting a hot rod this summer. The ghost car looks like a steampunk hot rod that could be $30-$40 US dollars, so we could've found the set. As for the character himself, he does look like a Monster Fighter. I could easily see him as some kind of secret member who got trapped and tried to survive in the Hidden Side, while slowly turning into a ghost. Also, why is he purple? I know anger ghosts can be pink, but he looks too purple for me. -
In 2001, we got the astounding hit Bionicle. In 2011, we got Ninjago, which also sparked success. If this decade streak told us anything, it is that we could be walking into a success and we don't know it yet. Also, while the Ninjago aesthetic is a random, chaotic mess, it seems like the replacement for an army of different themes Lego doesn't want to dedicate an entire full release for. So unless Lego changes their plan on original themes, Ninjago will last a while.

Well, I guess we will have to wait until April, if even that. This wave better be good, considering Monkey Kid could actually act as competition app wise. -

A little theme called Ninjago. Besides that, many mechs and other sized vehicles have dominated many other people Lego themes. -

Yet another anime- inspired theme will cover shelves. -

Agreed. Remember, the logo has nothing to do with sci fi. -

None of the summer Ninjago listings have any more sets under the Prime Empire aesthetic, so there won't be any more confusion. As for this wave, Monkey Kid will probibly follow the "anime" concept of futuristic characters traveling through an old and broken land. Remember, Monkey Kid has an AR app, and I doubt a science fiction story can use those correctly. Overall, we need more info before we judge this theme yet. -

The one thing I do not get is, if they are going to make this another futuristic based world, why is the logo so cartoony? At least with Nexo Knights or Hero Factory, we got a mechanical looking logo, while the one we are getting looks like a kiddie anime. I theorize that when set leaks come out, they will be in a somewhat traditional setting. Maybe the good guys travel from a fairly modern to science fiction city through ruins and natural terrain. I am confident we will get less modern - looking leaks, all we need is patience. -

Unfortunately, Ninjago's next wave will take place in a DnD type setting, and there aren't any new sets planned in the video game style. My theories are A.) this takes place in the Nexo Knights setting, B.) this is future Chima, or C.) Monkey Kid is anime! The LAST thing we need in the Lego landscape is for a theme like Hidden Side to get replaced by another Ninjago like theme. -
Well, it seems we are getting trolls and Goblins in this wave. I have a feeling this wave will be like the 2007 Castle theme with a more complex story and darker sets.

Depending if Hidden Side's AR was practice for the real "big bang" theme, this makes perfect sense. -

Well I am glad TLG knows Hidden Side has potential (despite mixed success.) -

Then she could have an updated ghost form in the app once the set is purchased. Otherwise, if this is the final wave, it would fee incomplete. Considering this wave seems to be the last, I feel like the only other way to complete the theme would be to introduce a larger enemy... -

To be fair, if Hidden Side does end in the Summer, it will end with 5 sets (the smallest wave in the theme's history.) While I wanted Hidden Side to have a proper show, we seem to be stuck with these Bionicle g2 shorts covering each set like a commercial. I am positive all of the sets will each have a short considering how shot and cheap most of them are. While I agree Nexo Knights had a lackluster final wave, it was mostly because of how repetitive most of the sets were. With Hidden Side, you have a clear aesthetic with most of the sets being distinct enough to not feel boring. If these sets are at least good builds with distinct charm, I would say the wave could be good. We just have to wait for pictures. -

I do not have any connections with TLG, but I do not think Hidden Side will have any sets in 2021. First of all, we are in a drought in non licenced themes. Instead of giving us options, all we have (other than Creator) are Repetitive City, Poorly - Marketed Friends, Confused Ninjago, and the one special theme that comes every 3 years. Considering how early we are getting Monkey Kid, it seems Lego is ether changing their theme release from 2.5 years to 1.5 years, or Hidden Side was nothing but training for Monkey Kid's AR feature. Also, if Lady E is a proper minifigure in the Castle, that set would make a proper Climactic ending. So, I guess we might see Hidden Side's end soon. Let's hope this is a wave to remember. -

I think it's popularity depends on the region you are in. For me, most of the sets aren't doing to well. Also, the "big set" of wave 3 seems like a perfect climactic battle. So I have doubts that Hidden Side will be released along side Monkey Kid, especially considering they will release at around the same time. -
LEGO Monkie Kid 2020

If Monkey Kid is a modern day interpretation, it would be horrible. I already felt Leaf was going to replace Hidden Side from the beginning, and I would prefer more Hidden Side buildings than City. Unless Monkey Kid takes place in a more Chinese inspired city, I feel most of the buildings would be bland. Also, we've seen giant cartoony vehicles too many times on store shelves already. I personally think that more fantastical play sets would be nice, since we have never seen to much Chinese culture in Lego until now. However, I do feel this theme could take place in the Chima relm. While the builds for this theme will be different, the old Legends of Chima theme had a decent amount of Chinese details inside (the Phoenix tribe, various anthropomorphic animals, the Chi itself, and the handwriting being similar.) Considering we only saw a piece of the Chima relm, (and the fact Chima's culture was evolving for millennias,) Monkey Kid could take place in a different piece of land. -
Well, I am still curious about the transition among chapters. How do you go from a futuristic video game to DnD. Does anyone have ideas?

I find it interesting how the castle doesn't have the same color scheme from Welcome To The Hidden Side, considering it contains physical ghost minifigures including Lady E. I personally wonder what the boss ghost of the set will be, considering the "main boss of the series" will be a minifigure. It seems to be the best set of the wave. Hopefully the submarine won't be a water version of the Beach Buggy.
