  1. Fortunately for my purposes, it doesn't have to function. By which I mean I'm not programming the RCX. I do maintain an XP laptop for unrelated legacy reasons, but there's a chance that even XP is too advanced for the original mindstorms software. And, I doubt it's worth the hassle to me. I'll upgrade to modern mindstorms when I get serious.
  2. Thankyou! Yes! That was fast. I'm slightly embarrassed. Mods, feel free to delete thread.
  3. I recently pulled out LEGO Robotics Invention System Set 9719 from the basement. I believe this is the first mindstorms set. It has a robot claw arm pictured on the box. https://img.brickowl.com/files/image_cache/larger/lego-robotics-invention-system-set-9719-packaging-25.jpg I believe it is like this: http://www.mastincrosbie.com/mark/lego/images/grabberarm1.jpg I received the set used from a friend when it was only a few years old, and haven't really touched it. The instructions are complete, but the instructions for the robot claw arm pictured were never part of the set. As far as I can tell it was an optional DL from the lego website. As this was about 20 years ago, you can guess that those instructions are no longer on the website. In fact, I have only roughly pieced together conclusion that they were ever on the website, I may well be wrong. I know this doesn't compare to modern Mindstorm options. But I really have my heart set on building this claw arm. Does anyone have any leads on where these directions might be available? It's old enough that it is not in the usual places that I know of that record instructions or alt. builds. Please and Thankyou. Else, I am sorry, I am not strictly certain this belongs in this forum (maybe in the "looking for" forum), but I thought the mindstorm nature of this search might put it here instead of general lego places.
  4. I'm new. I'm middle aged, still have my legos from child hood. My wife and I have been married for 10 years, and have only recently decided to mix our legos. We've bought a fair amount recently for some hobby projects. I live in the US, in the state of Washington, but in the desert part that no one knows about. I really find I like all the legos. Even themes I don't care about (e.g. super heroes) I can still get excited about the legoness. But I am classically most fond of the castle sets. I enjoy some amount of ninja variety, but am ready to get back to castle. I have a love of Sci Fi. So, while the space sets are rarely interesting to me (because of what they are doing) there is so much there to build the sci fi kind of worlds I imagine that the space sets have a special place in my heart.
  5. I need to make a part fluoresce under a black light. It is not available in a fluorescent colour. I have a lot of leeway. The part aims to be black or pearl gold. If the coating alters the colour somewhat, that is fine. Also, I can consider some other lego colours (that the part is available in), but those two would be best. So, I am looking for a dye or translucent paint that can be applied to lego bricks and that will fluoresce under a black light. It shouldn't be very thick, I want to retain the physical detail of the piece. I would prefer the fluorescent colour to be yellow/green ish. But I will take what I can get. It doesn't have to be permanent. If it rubs off easy, that's manageable. But it has to work when dry. Does anyone have any leads they would share? Please and thank you. Wild suggestions you have heard of but not seen are welcome. If you have first hand advice please include (if known) if the black light used was in the high end (390nm ish) or the low end of common black lights (360nm ish). The 360nm has less visable white light (and is more expensive), but again, I'll run with what I can make work with out pulling my hair out (I haven't bought the black light yet) I happen to have a gallon of this: https://brightdyes.com/tracer-dye/fluorescent-yellowgreen-dye/ Which though yellow is (like food colouring) dark orange in it's concentrated form. While it does discolour legos, the flourescent property doesn't seem to work so far. I have tried concentrated and diluted dips. As well as mixes with white glue (I have access to a black light for tests, but not for the real project). I feel like I could make this work. But as it's just this once, and I'm tired of the experiments, I am ready to buy a paint or dye that can do the job as-is (or with recipe). Please note: Glow in the dark paints usually don't fluoresce under a blacklight (they do super charge, but that's not a solution to my situation).
