  1. I had some hope this would be in a similar schale of the Mack container truck and the large towtruck. This however... meh. The truck doesn't look like a Volvo, lacks functionality, the trailer sits too high on the rear axle and as for its load... yawn. Then again, this is LEGO. Would I want it to look better, I could do so myself. I do think however the set itself should look great right from the start. This doesn't. It's a pass from me.
  2. Thank you! Oddly enough it never crossed my mind that these could be mixes from different figures. I'm going to start by using your link and will see how far I will get. Thank you so much!
  3. So... I work at a school and one of the assignments at history class was that they'd have to make diaroma with a history theme attached to it. 2 kids used LEGO minifigures, glued them to the shoebox and then left them behind. As a result the history teacher asked if I'd like to have them, so here we are. My knowledge in regards to LEGO from 1980-1995 is pretty good, but after that... not so much. I've no idea where to start. I enjoy putting sets back together as they're supposed to and this is a pretty fun start. But... could anyone tell me how to get started or maybe tell me to which sets these figures belong to?
  4. What a waste. 400 USD for a black box you can't display when opened because it takes up too much room and when opened doesn't resemble the Batcave of said movie because it lacks the boat among several things.
  5. I've done that plenty of times already. The issue shows up every time I build this set, but only after a couple of weeks. After building, everything works. I've done that as well. It doesn't help things. Yes, it can't escape, but it also still blocks and clicks.
  6. It does look like it, but even when I push the shock end to the chassis so the gear has room to spin around freely it's still clicking. I just read something about parts changing slightly. When looking on bricklink it shows 3 variants for the same part, all with subtle changes. Maybe I've just the wrong variant? https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3650a#T=C I can't tell however which one I've used?
  7. I was gifted this set for my birthday the year the set was released, all the way back in 1994. Every time after I build it the car would work. The rear engines make the pistons go up and down, much like every other technic set with a working engine. However, after just a few weeks the gears would start clicking, blocking the wheels. As a kid I rebuild the set many times and could never find a fault. It's now 2023. I own well over 300 sets and have build this set a year ago. It worked, and was put on the shelf with my other sets. My 3 year old is occasionally allowed to play with my LEGO sets while sitting next to me. He picked the 8588 and, yes, the gears are clicking. AGAIN. I just can't find out what I'm doing wrong. At first I thought the problem was somewhere in the truck itself but even when I disconnect everything but 2 gears it just isn't working like the instructions say it's supposed to work. I've added a page of the instructions and have included a video showing the clicking gears. I've a feeling I'm overlooking something because I rebuild this set over and over again but just can't find out where. Anyone able to help over here? 8. Thanks, but for me, the payoff after a build is a set that does both work and look good. Especially if it's a Technic set. If the final result isn't what it's supposed to be I feel I've done all the "work" for nothing. It's why I enjoyed the build of all the trucks. Long nights of putting things together and then being able to show it off without getting all frustrated because it sounds like I've made a mistake!
  9. So, after all is said and done; should I buy the Defender and expect to be able to build it without cracking noises like @kbalage says or should I ignore it? I just don't know. I buy a big Technic set about once every few years. I'm not someone to mod things, once it's build it ends up on the shelf and I occassionally take it in my hands to play with it. I own all the big trucks they've released the past 10 years and they all work to this day. Is the Defender up to the task or will it frustrate me endlessly? Does anyone know of any mod that does work? I'm unfamiliar with rebrickable so forgive me if this question has been answered somewhere! Thanks in advance.
  10. I know, but that's really all there is to it. This is a 300 Euro set with it's only function being able to drive steep hills. It's why, when LEGO did that survey, I voted against Control+ sets.
  11. Great review! But as for the truck itself in the end all it really does is... drive? Its design leaves much to be desired, it's essentially a glorified chassis. Even if this thing is discounted I've just no interest in it.
  12. This is a great review but I absolutely disagree with the rating for the design. I think this van looks awful and nothing like the van it's based on. Although the building techniques are fun there's also nothing particularly better about this van apart from a sliding door and some added steering functionality. Considering just how much bigger this one is you'd think they'd get closer to the original design but this doesn't seem to be the case. It's a real shame because when you're trying to recreate something you should either do it very well or not do it at all and I feel the end product is average at best. It's a great van, but a great VW van? Nah...
  13. I'm not expecting them to last forever though. What does surprise me is new white parts seem to yellow a lot faster than the parts I've got from the eighties. I own 6379 and those parts have yellowed the same way the white parts from the Volkswagen camper have yellowed. One is over 30 years old, the other was just 5 years old. The stable was put together several times and all white parts had been used heavily when I was a child. The Volkswagen camper had been put together 2 times and its parts had always been in a closed box. I realize the yellowing happens eventually and I don't mind it. Nothing lasts forever, my Fisher Price Garage from the eighties is just as yellow as the average LEGO brick. But a set that's just 2 years old showing discolouring already is unaccepting, really. You expect the parts to last a child's lifetime wouldn't you? Hence the question. It's easy to say "Just buy the set" but if parts start to break, yellow and crack on a set that's there for display value only it's not really living up to its promise, I think?
  14. I'm sure much has been said about this issue but I've a question related to this. I see so many fantastic sets but I often wonder what they look like after a few years. Can anyone shed a bit of light on this? The reason I'm asking is this; About a year ago I contacted LEGO about the yellowed parts for my Volkswagen camper. The set had never been in direct sunlight and yet some parts just looked like a different colour altogether. Some showed cracks as well, as can be seen on the photo attached. The arrows point to cracks, this isn't just dirt or hairs. LEGO had send me all new white parts as even those hidden in the set itself were yellowed. Last year I moved to my new place and was able to get a LEGO-room. I've spend the past few weeks building pretty much every town set from 1980 to 1995 until I ran out of space. Once this was finished it was time for the "grown up" sets. I was able to put the Volkswagen Camper back together with the new parts from LEGO. While building I realized that the blue from the seats had turned grey while it'd been in a box for a good 3 months. I realized that with many of those newer sets I noticed cracks as well. The Unimog has cracks in the orange parts, the yellow big crane truck has broken parts... Putting everything back together from the eighties made me realize that some white parts from that era are not as yellow as the white parts from that Volkswagen Camper. I've about 5 broken pieces from that era as well. LEGO was just of better quality I think? I see the Lamborghini has colour issues... I really like LEGO but I've refrained from buying the Ghostbusters car because of issues like these. Hence me asking. White doesn't stay white. Blue doesn't stay blue. Grey turns green/grey... What do the big sets look like after just a few years?
  15. Sure, but the mixer is still made out of one piece. It kind of defeats the idea of using interesting building techniques. Creating that model with a working system inside the mixer, no hand of god steering, 2 steering front axels would be completely different from what's out there.
