Ninjago Booster Packs - 9551, 9552, & 9553
LuxorV replied to Tung T. Le's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Thanks for the review, Tung T. Le. I was really interested in seeing better pics of these sets. On another note, could you please reduce the pics size to 800 pixels maximum, as per our Member Guidelines? Thank you. -
I thought I stated it somewhere in the review... Anyway, it's the old 2009 headpiece.
-
No problem at all. I'm glad LEGO gave us a chance to do this again for the third time, and I hope our reviews (these and the ones to come in the next few days) will be helpful for our readers.
-
I have no problem in admitting it. But did you consider that's because the 3 sets are so similar to one another? They have the same box style and general building steps. I hope you found the HF reviews more original and entertaining.
-
Probably I did; it just looked better in my eyes.
-
Ooops! Yes, it's the same purple.
-
The new friction joint can be connected to the Glatorian head, but it makes the nexk look blocky. I think it could work with bigger helmets that cover the back of the head like Fire Lord's, but would look ugly on characters with smaller helmets or just masks like the Glatorians themselves.
-
Components are from Hungary, Mexico and Czech Republic.
-
I meant to put the description in all 3 Super Heroes reviews, then thought it would have been too redundant. You'll find it's description in Batman's review. Basically, it's a joint with a rubbery cap in it which provides friction. It makes the Super Heroes' (and Black Phantom's, I think) hips more sturdy.
-
You're right! I had a draft for this based on another model, and missed to fix it in the final version. Thanks for pointing it out. Might be it's named bright red, but it does not look very different form standard red to me...
-
They are both using bright green. I had a feeling I had seen it somewhere, but could not remember excatly.
-
I'm glad my review could help you. As for the cuffs, no, they don't get below the feet (unless you bed his knee 90à, of course ).
-
They are 1.0 helmets agan, but look on the bright side: we gat Rocka's 'prequel' helmet. I do not have those sets personally, but some bird-bot tells me their reviews will be coming shortly. Just stay tuned. Yes, the back is hollow as in the 2.0 and 3.0 lines, but the tubes do something to cover it in the upper part.

Theme: Super Heroes (DC Universe) Set name: Green Lantern Set Number: 4528 Price: 16.99? $, 16.99? Euro Pieces: 41 pieces (incl. 3 spares) Year of release: 2012 Links: Peeron, Bricklink and Brickset The Box Front The front of the box shows the Green Lantern flying in space over Oa and using his ring’s power to create an energy fist/ball, something. The LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number and age range (plus probably more info in the American version) complete the front together with Green Lantern’s name and symbol. Back The back shows Joker in an alternate version. Moreover, there are images showing the ball-and-socket building system and the new joint with friction (more on it in Batman's review). Again, the LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number Green Lantern’s name(s) and symbol are present. A small ad for the LEGO Super Heroes site is in the lower right corner, probably connected to the combiner model of Joker and Green Lantern shown in the lower half of the back. I was pleased to notice that this combo is different from the one shown on Joker’s box. Sides The sides show a variety of legal notices and ads. Contents Inside The bag contains one bag of parts, two torso bone pieces and an instructions’ booklet. I was pleased to notice that the booklet was not bent, even if it is not card boarded. Much like Joker’s, Green Lantern’s design includes a number of green parts seldom seen in the Bionicle and Hero Factory lines. White and the black bone pieces complete the set, together with the trans neon green energy parts. New pieces The new parts, largely anticipated, are the upper torso piece, here decorated with a Green Lantern symbol, the new joint with friction, the spiked half ball and cone pieces and Hal Jordan’s head. Green Lantern’s head is all made of hard plastic, and that may explain why it was separated from the other parts, while Batman’s and Joker’s aren’t. Re-coloured parts The re-coloured parts include the large shell, the wrist blades support used in Bulk 3.0, the hand shield from Savage Planet and the Hero Factory foot piece. Spare parts This set includes 2 spare pieces. Instructions The front of the booklet shows the same image as the front of the bag, minus the ads and some other info. The first page is occupied by a short comic featuring Green Lantern. In lack of a worthy opponent, Green Lantern resolves to smashing asteroids, and seems pretty satisfied with it. Random page – every step is accompanied by its pieces’ call out box. Nothing too complicated, but useful to tell one shell piece from the other. The background image, in blue/aqua tones, does not distract the eye, but give a pleasant surface on which the steps are displayed. The usual parts’ list. The right side is lined with the head shots of all three DC Universe Super Heroes sets. Building Start Contrary to what happens with standard Hero Factory and Bionicle builds, the Super Heroes’ building start with the head. This gives the hero a creepy skeleton with fleshy head feel in the first steps. Adding armour We proceed to make the character bulkier… … give him arms ... … and add the back-pack. Now, this is what I call a big pair of shoulders!. Due to the use of a tan friction-less pin/axle part, the head of the energy fist/beam can rotate freely. I think this is a design choice connected to the colour scheme: the standard blue pin/axle with friction would have been too visible inside the trans neon green parts. Finished set In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power... Green Lantern's light! Size comparison These Super Heroes can really dwarf the Hero Factory standard heroes! This, along with the heavy torso and back-pack, is the reason why they were given the special joints with friction, I suppose. Bonus images Family shot Here is a comparative shot of Batman, Joker and Green Lantern. Pick your favourite. Final comments Overall, Green Lantern is a great figure. He’s the most bulky in the Super Heroes line, but I don’t think TLG designers went overboard with him. The new and re-coloured pieces are a good addition to anyone’s collection and are excellent MOCing pieces. His design is unique, but still in line with his classic comic style, and the colour scheme is very close to his comic version. Design & Colour scheme – 10/10 (Very well proportioned and efficient. Green & white with black accents work well together. He has a somewhat mechanical feel, but way less then the HF sets, so it’s good in my opinion.) Parts – 10/10 (Great variety of useful parts, a reasonable amount of new pieces, and even a cool printed one, not to speak of Green Lantern’s head!) Playability – 7/10 (The movements are smooth, but somewhat limited, due to the bulky armour, especially on his shoulders.) Build – 8/10 (Nothing too complex, but some efficient solutions are used.) Price – 9/10 (I believe it’s a good compromise between number of pieces, their size, the number of new parts in this set and the fact it is a licensed set.) Overall: 8.8/10 Very good. As always, questions, comments, and pic requests welcome!

Theme: Super Heroes (DC Universe) Set name: Joker Set Number: 4527 Price: 16.99? $, 16.99? Euro Pieces: 62 pieces (incl. 5 spares) Year of release: 2012 Links: Peeron, Bricklink and Brickset The Box Front The front of the box shows the Joker planning some mischief somewhere in a circus under a nice sunset. The pose is pretty nice, with the weapon in plain view, and the tails of Joker’s dress spread behind the body. Can you feel his craze seep through your monitor? The LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number and age range (plus probably more info in the American version) complete the front together with Joker’s name and Batman’s symbol. All of these Super Heroes look pretty bulky and mechanised, and I’ve heard TLG found a plausible explanation for this. It seems they are wearing some sort of ‘battle suit’ or ‘power armour’. Now, that works well for Batman, and possibly for Green Lantern (his must be made of will energy from the ring, of course), but I never heard of Joker using a power armour before… Back The back shows Joker in an alternate version. Moreover, there are images showing the ball-and-socket building system and the new joint with friction (more on it in Batman's review). Again, the LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number Joker’s name(s) and Batman’s symbol are present. A small ad for the LEGO Super Heroes site is in the lower right corner, probably connected to the combiner model of Joker and Green Lantern shown in the lower half of the back. Sides The sides show a variety of legal notices and ads. Contents Inside The bag contains two bags of parts and an instructions’ booklet. I was pleased to notice that the booklet was not bent, even if it is not card boarded. I like how Joker’s design includes a variety of colourful parts, especially in green and purple, two colours we seldom see in the Bionicle and Hero Factory lines. New pieces The new parts, largely anticipated, are the long torso piece, here decorated with a colourful flower, the new joint with 3 balls, the revolver piece and Joker’s head. The long torso piece uses the standard ball and socket connection to attach to the torso bone piece. Joker’s head is made of hard plastic, covered with a hairs of soft, rubbery plastic. Re-coloured parts The re-coloured parts include the large shell and smallest shell in purple, the long tail piece (used as wings for Batman) also in purple, the motor hood already seen in DrillDozer, here in trans neon red, and the System flag/shock piece in a green/purple mix. Spare parts This set, which already includes the largest number of parts from the Super Heroes line, also includes the largest number of extras: 5 spare pieces to use in MOCs and or tweak Joker with. Instructions The front of the booklet shows the same image as the front of the bag, minus the ads and some other info. The first page is occupied by a short comic featuring Batman and Joker. Now, while I like the look of this tails from the front, from the side they look just like a couple of reptilian appendages, making Joker seem some sort of crazy therapod offspring. The weapon is just a colourful gun Joker might have used in one of his many incarnations. I like the new ‘revolver’ piece, though I wish TLG included at least two in this set, to give the weapon a more proportioned and sturdy look. Having it in solid colours would be interesting, also. Finished set Batman will have his share of pain capturing this crazed, and now power armoured, villain, no doubt. Final comments Overall, Joker is a good figure, but I must say I never liked the character too much He’s the less bulky in the Super Heroes line, but I think he’ll compensate with his craze. The new and re-coloured pieces are a good addition to anyone’s collection and are excellent MOCing pieces. His design is unique, but still in line with his classic comic style, and the colour scheme is excellent for this hyped clown. Design & Colour scheme – 10/10 (Very well proportioned and efficient. Green & purple work well together. He has a somewhat mechanical feel, but way less then the HF sets, so it’s good in my opinion.) Parts – 10/10 (Great variety of useful parts, a reasonable amount of new pieces, and even a cool printed one, not to speak of Joker’s head, completed with spiky hair!) Playability – 7/10 (The movements are smooth, but somewhat limited, due to the bulky armour, especially on his shoulders.) Build – 8/10 (Nothing too complex, but some efficient solutions are used.) Price – 9/10 (I believe it’s a good compromise between number of pieces, their size, the number of new parts in this set and the fact it is a licensed set.) Overall: 8.8/10 Very good. Theme: Super Heroes (DC Universe) Set name: Batman Set Number: 4526 Price: 16.99? $, 16.99? Euro Pieces: 40 Year of release: 2012 Links: Peeron, Bricklink and Brickset The Box Front The front of the box shows the Dark Knight watching over Gotham from the rooftops. The background is comic-styled, with the scantly lighted buildings providing a somewhat lighter base for Batman’s figure. The pose is pretty effective, with the double katana weapon in plain view, and the cape/wings spread behind the body. I pity the fool who’ll have to face him tonight. The LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number and age range (plus probably more info in the American version) complete the front together with Batman’s name and symbol. Back The back shows Batman in an alternate version. Moreover, there are images showing the ball-and-socket building system and the new joint with friction (more on it later). Again, the LEGO, DC Universe, Super Heroes logos, set number Batman’s name and symbol are present. A small ad for the LEGO Super Heroes site is in the lower right corner, probably connected to the combiner model of Batman and Green Lantern shown in the lower half of the back. Sides The sides show a variety of legal notices and ads. Contents Inside The bag contains two bags of parts, a loose torso bone piece and an instructions’ booklet. I was pleased to notice that the booklet was not bent, even if it is not card boarded. As expected from Batman, blue is the main colour, complemented by some gunmetal. The bones are mainly black, with some dark bluish grey and bluish grey pieces. New pieces The new parts, largely anticipated, are the upper torso piece, here decorated with Batman’s symbol, the new joint with friction, the katana and Batman’s head. The upper torso piece uses the standard two pin connection to attach to the classic torso piece. Batman’s head is made of hard plastic, covered with a hood of soft, rubbery plastic. The joint with friction is made of plastic, and not rubbery plastic as I first thought. The only rubber part is the trans clear dot in the middle, which is what generates the friction. Re-coloured parts The re-coloured parts include the torso piece, appearing here in blue and the longest bone piece, here in black for the first time. Instructions The front of the booklet shows the same image as the front of the bag, minus the ads and some other info. The first page is occupied by a short comic featuring Batman and Joker. Lastly, there is an ad for the minifig scaled Super Heroes sets. Building Start Contrary to what happens with standard Hero Factory and Bionicle builds, the Super Heroes’ building start with the head. This gives the hero a creepy skeleton with fleshy head feel in the first steps. Adding armour We proceed to make the character bulkier… … give him arms ... … and add the jet-/back-pack. Finished set Batman looks ready to take on any enemy. I can envision him using those wings to fly above the city, ready to stop criminals. His bulky appearance and deadly weapon are a sight to behold. Final comments Overall, Batman is a great figure, but, then again, who does not love Batman? He’s bigger and better equipped than ever, and can take on any opponent. The new and re-coloured pieces are a good addition to anyone’s collection and are excellent MOCing pieces. His design is unique, but still in line with his classic comic style, and the colour scheme is excellent (though I prefer his black costume, personally). Design & Colour scheme – 10/10 (Very well proportioned and efficient. Blue & gunmetal work well together. He has a somewhat mechanical feel, but way less then the HF sets, so it’s good in my opinion.) Parts – 10/10 (Great variety of useful parts, a reasonable amount of new pieces, and even a cool printed one, not to speak of Batman’s head!) Theme: Hero Factory / Breakout Set name: Jawblade Set Number: 6216 Price: 9.99 $, 9.99 Euro Pieces: 51 pieces (incl. 6 spares) Year of release: 2012 Links: Peeron, Bricklink and Brickset The Box Front As is well known, the new line of Hero Factory sets introduces a new ‘boxing’ model (with the only exception of Black Phantom, as far as I know). It is more of a hybrid box/bag, actually. The material is though flexible plastic, possibly lined with a tin foil? The end result is the envelope is quite thick and can withstand some handling without fear of damaging the contents. These new bags (or boxes) are quite hard to photograph, since the shiny metallic surface will reflect any light in unpleasant halos that cover part of the design. Nonetheless, you can see TLG designers put a lot of effort in these packaging. For instance, the upper part sports a zipper design, indicating this is a re-sealable bag. If you look at the flap, you can see Jawblade’s head/helmet (Heroes’ laps have the HF symbol). The lager part of the front is covered by an action shot showing our sharky villain swimming in what is probably an ocean world, on the run from Furno. The same Furno can be glimpsed in the upper middle-right part. The lower right corner is occupied by an ad for the on-line game and shows the number of free points (200 in this case) this set’s hidden code will grant you (more on this later). The LEGO, Hero Factory logos, set number and age range (plus probably more info in the American version) complete the front. Back The back shows Jawblade, some action features like his opening jaws and a 1:1 shot of his head. There is a cut here line on top, together with Jawblade’s name(s) on the upper left corner. The mid portion of the back sport a larger ad for the Hero Factory site and on-line videogames. Finally, TLG usual legal notes complete the lower portion of the back. Size comparison As you can see, this villain’s bag is still somewhat bigger than the standard canisters we got used to in recent lines. Opening Using an exacto knife (or similar) and some attention, you can cut just one side of the bag, so that you can take the contents out, put them back in and re-seal the bag without extensive damage to its overall appearance. Contents Inside The bag contains one smaller bag of parts (I suppose they are needed to protect the pieces given the more flexible nature of the outer bag), a loose torso bone piece and an instructions’ booklet. As expected from Jawblade, flat silver is the main colour. The bones are mainly black, with some red pieces. Transparent neon red is used for the head and one shell piece. New pieces The new parts, largely anticipated, are the shark helmet and new Hero Core. I’m not sure if the lower jaw piece is new; it certainly is new in my collection. The Hero Core connects with the usual two pins, and sports a code on its back. This code, used to unlock the free points in the on-line videogame is the only reason why villain sets have Hero Cores in them, it seems. I really like this helmet. It works very well in capturing the shark look, and still manages to have a deep mechanical feel to it. Re-coloured parts The re-coloured parts include the size 6 shell piece in trans neon red, the Bionicle hand trans neon red as well, and the wrist blades support used in Bulk 3.0 in flat silver. Spare parts This set includes 6 spare parts; nothing mind-blowing, but all useful pieces. Instructions The front of the booklet shows the same image as the front of the bag, minus the ads and some other info. The first pages are devoted to advertising the on-line game and the way to use the hidden code printed on the back side of the Hero Core to gain free points. Furno and Jawblade can combine to form an even deadlier shark-like creature armed with a fin mounted cannon. Random page – every step is accompanied by its pieces’ call out box. Nothing too complicated, but useful to tell one shell piece from the other. The background image, in greenish aqua tones, does not distract the eye, but give a pleasant surface on which the steps are displayed. The usual parts’ list. Nothing special here. Building We start by building Jawblade’s spinal cord. From this point, we keep adding… … fins, armour, … … arms and we get to the … Finished set I think Jawblade will be my favourite villain from the Breakout line. I just love how he is designed and all the fins and other protruding parts that were included in him. Bonus images Smile for the cameras The pointy ‘nose and the stream lined body clearly speak of an aquatic hunter. I don’t know what you think, but I wouldn’t like to meet anything that has a jaw like this on my next trip to the seaside! Am I big enough for you? There’s been some discussion about Jawblade’s length. As you can see, he is effectively 30 centimetres (11.82 inches) long, when tail and blades are extended! Final comments Overall, Jawblade is a fantastic figure. He’s bigger than I expected, and he looks way better in person than what the first images made us believe. The new and re-coloured pieces are a good addition to anyone’s collection and are excellent MOCing pieces. His design is unique and the colour scheme is excellent, dark and menacing as befitted to such a creature as him. Design & Colour scheme – 10/10 (Very well proportioned and efficient. Gunmetal & flat silver well together, and the give a good mechanical feel to the overall design. The red touches add to the peril aura that surrounds this shark-bot No complaints whatsoever.) Parts – 10/10 (Great variety of useful parts, a reasonable amount of new pieces, and a really cool new helmet!.) Playability – 10/10 (The movements are smooth, and the opening jaws feature is a very nice touch.) Build – 8/10 (Nothing too complex, but some efficient solutions are used.) Price – 10/10 (I believe it’s a good compromise between number of pieces, their size and the number of new parts in this set.) Overall: 9.6/10 Excellent As always, questions, comments, and pic requests welcome!

Theme: Hero Factory / Breakout Set name: Furno 4.0 Set Number: 6293 Price: 12.99 $, 12.99 Euro Pieces: 53 pieces (incl. 2 spares) Year of release: 2012 Links: Peeron, Bricklink and Brickset The Box Front As is well known, the new line of Hero Factory sets introduces a new ‘boxing’ model (with the only exception of Black Phantom, as far as I know). If you look at the flap, you can see the HF symbol on it (villains’ laps have personal designs). The lager part of the front is covered by an action shot showing our not so rookie Furno swimming in what is probably an ocean world, on the tracks of Jawblade. The same Jawblade can be glimpsed in the upper right corner. The lower right corner is occupied by an ad for the on-line game and shows the number of free points (300 in this case) this set’s hidden code will grant you (more on this later). The LEGO, Hero Factory logos, set number and age range (plus probably more info in the American version) complete the front. Back The back shows Furno, some action features like the cannon and manacles and a 1:1 shot of his head. It would seem the Heroes were struck by a bout of nostalgia, as they all got back to using their first helmets (with the notable exception of Rocka, who never had a 1.0 helmet to begin with). This is a clever move from TLG, imo. In fact, they got a lot of criticism for the lack of personality in the 2.0 design, and the more original 3.0 helmets worked only for the peculiar environment they were designed for. There is a cut here line on top, together with Furno’s name on the upper left corner. The mid portion of the back sports a larger ad for the Hero Factory site and on-line videogames. Finally, TLG usual legal notes complete the lower portion of the back. Size comparison As you can see, this new Heroes’ bags are way bigger than the standard canisters we got used to in recent lines. Opening Using an exacto knife (or similar) and some attention, you can cut just one side of the bag, so that you can take the contents out, put them back in and re-seal the bag without extensive damage to its overall appearance. Contents Inside The bag contains two smaller bags of parts (I suppose they are needed to protect the pieces given the more flexible nature of the outer bag), a loose torso bone piece, two ribbed tubes and an instructions’ booklet. As expected from Furno, red is the main colour, complemented by some white. The bones are mainly black, with some dark bluish grey pieces. Transparent colours are used for the head and one shell piece. New pieces The new parts, largely anticipated are the larger torso piece, here decorated with flames, the new launcher base and cannon part (more about these later on), and the smaller Hero Core. I like how the core is decorated with a light grey design to underline the central H. The torso piece uses the standard ball connection to attach to the torso bone. Equally interesting are the manacle parts, which come loose in the bag, and must be… …assembled to use. The star like design on the sides of the holes might be meant to represent energy siphoning devices which take the power from the bearer, as seen in the previous films. Re-coloured parts The re-coloured parts include the large shell piece in red, the hand shield from Savage Planet in flat silver and the long bone piece with 90° turn in dark bluish grey. Spare parts This set includes 2 spare parts: a robot hand/clip and a Technic pin with friction. Building Start The build starts off with the torso and legs. Adding arms First we add the armoured left arm, then… … the cannon arm on the right. Despite their different length, the two arms do not look too disproportioned when the Hero is posed. Armour and propellers lead us to the… Finished set Furno looks ready to take on any enemy. I can envision him using those propellers to fly as well as swim, and the arms and tubes give him a bulky appearance he never sported in previous incarnations. Size comparison Compared to the older Hero sets (excluding the Titans), the new Heroes look bigger and bulkier. I believe that Surge and Evo, though, being smaller sets, will be more or less as tall as their previous versions. Bonus images Cuff ’em Here Furno demonstrates the use of the new manacles on the only willing partner he could find… Back to the origins After capturing Jawblade, Furno can get hold of his plasma blades once again (I know the story will tell us they are other weapons, mot certainly, but still…) Launchers’ combos There has been some debate about the new launcher parts and how they could combine with the older ones. As evident from this shot, the new part is shorter than the ’09 one. If used together, the ’09 piece will extend more than the ’11 one, rendering the launcher useless. But LEGO is all about creativity. So, let’s just connect the ’09 piece via the pin hole, instead of the axle hole. And here we have a working launcher once again! The only con is that the ’09 piece will tend to pivot on the pin, but using friction pins will reduce this problem noticeably. Of course, the ’11 piece and the cannon top work together (though I cannot launch anything, probably because of my big fingers). By using the pin hole again, … … the combination of cannon top and ’09 launcher piece is possible once again! As a final note, any combination including the cannon top will be unable to shoot the Glatorian spiked balls (Thornax fruits, if I remember correctly). Final comments Overall, Furno 4.0 is a fantastic figure. He’s bigger and better equipped than ever, and can take on his opponents in their own environment, so he must be pretty good at it, too. The new and re-coloured pieces are a good addition to anyone’s collection and are excellent MOCing pieces. His design is unique, as for all the Heroes in this line, and the colour scheme is excellent. Design & Colour scheme – 10/10 (Very well proportioned and efficient. Red & white work well together, and the darker accents give a good old mechanical feel to the overall design. No complaints whatsoever.) Parts – 9/10 (Great variety of useful parts, a reasonable amount of new pieces, and even a cool printed one! The only small con is the use of the old ‘brittle’ piece for the head, which gives a nasty feel when clipping it on, compared to the newer ones.) Playability – 10/10 (The movements are smooth, and the propellers’ feature is a very nice touch. Moreover, the cannon and the castle axe on it give a nice harpoon feel to the right arm, fitting the environment.) Build – 8/10 (Nothing too complex, but some efficient solutions are used.) Price – 10/10 (I believe it’s a good compromise between number of pieces, their size and the number of new parts in this set.) Overall: 9.4/10 Excellent As always, questions, comments, and pic requests welcome!

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm glad you like it. The ice cream cone design had been in the back of my mind for some time, and this vignette was a good excuse to try it for real.

So, after much time passed reminding myself I had to make an entry to the contest, and not finding the time to actually put bricks together, I finally present you Mr. Freeze's Freezer. I took my inspiration from the Batman and Robin film, where I saw Mr. Freeze for the first time. Hope you'll enjoy it.
