Detective's Office, Brick Bank and Tower Bridge retiring soon?
brickmeistro replied to brickmeistro's topic in LEGO Town
That makes a lot of sense, and also gives me a bit of comfort ? been splurging recently on Ideas, Technic, Jurassic, Star Wars etc., so money’s a bit tight at the moment. I picked up Parisian on eBay bnib for 100, so really pleased with that!! will wait for DO and BB to pop on the Black Friday or Christmas sales. Otherwise can always pick up at retail price from John Lewis in case it retires suddenly. What are your thoughts on the Tower Bridge? Feels like it could retire soon but on the other hand, it could also be the first set to be offered for 10 straight years ? I’m going to leave AS for next year - or at least until there’s a 25% plus discount.- 51 replies

Detective's Office, Brick Bank and Tower Bridge retiring soon?
brickmeistro replied to brickmeistro's topic in LEGO Town
AUD200 is about £110... that's much cheaper than in the UK!! But the question is... would you grab it directly from lego for 10% cash back or would you wait for the price to drop further before it retires?- 51 replies

Detective's Office, Brick Bank and Tower Bridge retiring soon?

Thanks Bricked1980! I will check out the discount code. Though I think the Lego 10% cash back (£12.8 off the brick bank and £14.2 off the detective's office) combined with the free minifig display frame make it more attractive to buy directly from the lego site. I do think though, that this discount would be very useful for something that's already discounted by Smyths (and still over £100).- 51 replies

After a long time collecting other themes and being on the sidelines on most of the creator expert sets, I have now been bitten by the modular and large landmarks bug. I realise that the tower bridge - 10214 has been around super long and could easily retire without any notice. The same could apply to Detective's office 10246 and Brick Bank 10251. I have been monitoring the prices, but they are all much higher than the 1 year low point. The 6 month lows represent a £108 discount over RRP and a £62 discount after accounting for the 10% cash back. If the price doesn't drop further and shop at home don't drop prices or offer any more double/triple VIP points offers before retirement, I would have lost £23 (half of the current 10% cash back). Would you recommend that I take advantage of the current 10% VIP points/cashback? Or do you think there's a chance of a better price drop at Lego or one of the online retailers before the sets retire?

Thanks for the images - it's fun discovering about lego history :) That's a good idea... an MOC sturdy base plate... will make my builds sturdier during transport!
-
Thanks for all the information guys! Looking at the parchment-like quality of base plates nowadays, I do wish Lego would make something even half a brick thick. Basebricks would be awesome, even if they cost 4 times as much as a baseplate. They would probably last decades longer!

Non-availability of Lego products in the UK
brickmeistro replied to Paulbricks's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I suppose it's going to get only worse after Brexit. -
The pieces I found weren't the 10x20s. They were 4x12 and 8x16. Each has a grid of squares and stud holes, so plenty of reinforcement. Overall looks like a super sturdy brick, and I am sure it would make an awesome base plate if it was 32x32 or larger!
-
Yes, those are the ones I'm referring to! The base plates we can get now are so flimsy, I think I'd have to stack 2-3 just to get a sturdy base. It would be awesome if Lego could make base plates with brick-thickness! And speaking of these, are the large brick base plates available nowadays? I looked into the pick a brick, but couldn't locate any.
-
I was going through some old lego I had bought in a couple of job lots and noticed some smaller base plates which were much thicker than the plates you get nowadays. Would anyone be able to let me know the reason or possible reason Lego stopped making thicker base plates? And if they actually ever made thick base plates in really large sizes? Just curious!

[PRESS RELEASE] 75192 - UCS Millennium Falcon 2017
brickmeistro replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Like others said, both the firehouse and the Death Star were discounted. And that too heavily. I can see more similarities with he Porsche set, which was super popular and sold out for the initial months, but veg cheap now. I read in one of the reviews that the MF will probably be available for a long time and inevitably be discounted at some point. Decisions decisions! -

Thanks. I did order it today and it's on back order at the moment. I figured that I didn't have time to think about it before it sold out, but would have time to change my mind before it shipped. I really want the 75192, but also, the prospect of picking one up £80-£100 cheaper, or for double/triple VIP points is really appealing. And though I have ordered it today, I am unlikely to build it for the next year or so, until I work through my backlog of unbuilt sets. So wondering if I'm going to end up paying extra just for the privilege of owning the set longer. -

Is it worth waiting for the set to mature and the price to come down? I had bought the Porsche (42056) from the store as soon as it was back in stock following the initial sell out. Paid full retail, but currently selling on Amazon for a £80 discount. What do you guys think? Is the 75192 likely to be in the same state in one year? Or is it worth getting one just now just in case it’s perpetually out of stock? -
Thank you so much Sariel! Now I need to plan a visit to the Lego factory and take a tour! Are they available to the public or are they by invitation only? I can't wait for your videos about the other sets of 2016!

Picked up the set from the Lego store in Glasgow (Buchannan Galleries). They had a couple of boxes left on the shelf. The staff said it's quite popular and they get deliveries every few days once they sell out. Also got this month's freebie - the creator fountain set. They had some parrots left over from last month and they gave me one of them too.

Hi Sandeep, Simple Tupperware boxes of suitable size might help you keep your pieces locked up and out of reach of younger builders in your apartment until they are of suitable age as to not lose precious bricks. I think in your case security and ease of storage is more important than being organized (which can wait maybe until you have the luxury of a separate work space). I would suggest stackable and air tight boxes which are big enough to hold all your bricks and which can be conveniently stored out of reach until you want to access them.

Maybe in the meantime you can build your own version of the BWE!! -

To me using functions manually makes a set playable. Motorizing using PF adds a new dimension to playability. Adding a remote control adds another one. Having functions is key and is what makes a set fun for me... manual/PF/RC are just different ways to have fun -

I see the part count and think - "this is going to be so much fun to build!!" But being a new AFOL myself too, I will wait for the experts to have a go at the build and provide their feedback before I take the plunge with my money -
Hi, I am a brand new AFOL and have spent the past few weeks browsing for my initial sets. I have already gathered a few, but noticed that a lot of good sets were start with 8000 while others begin with 42000. Was there a time after which TLG switched from 8000 to 42000? Or was there a different reason for the 2 series of sets? And why didn't TLG just continue with 8000 on to 9000 and so on? Just curious

That certainly appeals to me. I saw your post about the scissor lift... fantastic project and very interesting to see the progress! Right now it's become a matter of cost-benefit for me. At the RRP of £155, Unimog was good value for money. At more than £250, it becomes less so for me. I do however love the look of the cabin and the overall structure and am drawn to buy it for that alone. don't know what to do!!
