White is the New Red
filuS replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Good catch, guys - it is indeed Francisco Hartleys blue Pagani Huayra, or at least my somewhat poor attempt at it. I still have a some things to fix here and there, only crucial thing that does not work is steering, but it is more or less display ready, looking fine on the shelf :). As it was pointed out, there are no instructions for it and Francisco does not respond to any requests (which is understandable - I bet there are lots of people asking for instructions). Unfortunately all pictures I could find are quite low resolution and it's hard (or impossible) to see the details on them. Considering I only recently woke up from a my dark ages and I have no experience building anything in such scale, it's nightmare sometimes :D But the result is (or will be once it's finished) worth it. -
White is the New Red
filuS replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I am not really fond of red, maybe because it's so common. White is fine and very available, same goes for black. But I would prefer white over black for showcasing small nuances and details in body design, black eats some details up. There is also a fair share of yellow cars as well. I am really hoping for more MOCs in less traditional colors but there are always some crucial parts lacking: orange - a lot of parts available but some often used liftarms are very rare and 64681/64393 panels are non-existent (those are used pretty much in every MOC I was interested in building), also no flex axles blue - some parts available, some extremely rare and some only in different shade of blue (dark blue / medium blue) - even after seeing those two blue cars, the only one I like in blue is Francisco Hartleys Pagani Huayra green - same as blue I would say I am still waiting on some news on that new Porsche, crossing my fingers for purple :) Here is my Lego garage, my aim is to have as much (color) diversity as possible - hope you don't mind posting this image in your thread: -
[MOC] LaFerrari hypercar 1:9

I am loving the back of this car, it looks so real. Simply breathtaking, great job -
Does anyone know this panel?

when you select a brick in LDD, it will show its number and name in status bar (bar below the main window). Most of the time you can find that brick on bricklink by part number listed in mentioned status bar, in this case 24116. -
@bastet: I am really interested in that Mercedes, it would be awesome to have full DTM lineup. I can't say I am loving your yellow-green-with-white/orange-accents, fuller bodywork version of Lipkos Audi RS5 but it certainly is interesting and that color combination adds a bit of uniqueness to it. For me yellow works best for BMW M4. On the other hand - I can't wait to see the final result for that Mercedes C63, white/black seems to suit the car very nicely. However, I think you should create your own topic for showcasing your DTM lineup to avoid taking attention from Brunos BMW M4 - I am pretty sure there are many DTM fans to appreciate such topic :)

42056 - Porsche Speculation
filuS replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If they wish to show the exclusivity of this model I think they sort have to go with a bit unusual color, even if that meant they will not satisfy MOCers. They did it with 41999 for example - dark blue isn't exactly common lego color. That keeps my hopes up for either purple or silver-ish variant here. Porsches Lava Orange seems to be very close to standard lego red, I hope they will not decide to go with that. Ideal solution (maybe not for TLG but for people for sure) would be to make this set available in multiple colors but likelihood of that happening is pretty small imo. -
Ah, this is what I was missing. Due to lack of 33299 in my pool of spare parts, I implemented a bit modified solution with the same general idea. I used one 32184 on each side of steering arm and connected them with 3L axles. Wheels do not touch the headlights panels now. Thanks a lot for your help. That blue/white version looks good in real life - on renders it didn't look quite as appealing. But so far no color combination for this car beats the yellow one for me :)

1. The steering is not centered - steering itself is centered; I actually dismantled the car once already in order to center the steering and gear 2 XL motors down. This collision is happening on both sides, which kind of proves that it is centered. 2. Your servo moves more than 90 degrees in both directions which is not normal - I don't think this is the reason either, on a picture you can see that there are 4 studs visible on the left and 2 on the right. Steered the other way, it is the opposite. When not steered, 3 on both sides. That proves it is centered and also that the travel is that one stud. 3. You use an M- motor instead of a servo - it's definitely servo 4. the steering rack / gear setup is different - I guess this has to be it (logically, after ruling out all of the above). Maybe I screwed something up when I rebuilt the car, I just can't tell what that could be as nothing looks misplaced or out of proportion. If noone else has the same issue as I do than I will leave it be here, as it would obviously be my own doing rather than problem with a model and/or instructions. Speaking of Lego garages - I am building my own (http://i.imgur.com/l7QRdUi.jpg) and this car is so far its prime piece, hands down. So true the original, so much attention to details, so yellow :D The only problem now is - I am sort of addicted and currently I don't have a space for all those models, so they sit wherever I can find an empty spot - on floor, under the bed... I am still planning on expanding the collection with at least 4 more cars - the biggest challenge by far will be recreating Francisco Hartleys blue Pagani Huayra, with most of its functions, a task for which I don't have enough skill nor experience, but hopefully I will manage it somehow. Since there are no instructions nor LDD, I will have to reverse engineer it from pictures. But one day, when I finally settle down, I will dedicate one wall in the house to displaying Lego Technic :)
-
Unfortunately it happens on both sides but maybe it is worth noting that only when going back. This problem does not occur when steering while going forward, only in reverse. My bet is that front wheels are a bit looser than they should be and they wiggle a little too much. I was thinking of modifying steering mechanism, to give it a half stud of a travel less for steering - that way the wheels would never touch that plate.
-
This is how I solved that IR receiver in front - it is not locked in place with pins but rather a liftarm. Maybe it is not the most beautiful solution but if it works it works :) As for wheel-headlights touching during steering problem, I don't really have a solution for that. Headlights are where they are supposed to be, half a stud to the middle/front and they would look kind of misplaced. Aesthetically they look like they are where they are supposed to be, unfortunately it just does not work mechanically. Maybe I really did something wrong and others don't have this problem, that's a possibility too :)
-
When I was building this model I needed to make few modifications because some things simply weren't fitting or looked a bit misplaced (it was quite tricky for that front receiver, it doesn't seem to fit in there at all - I ended up with creating some so sort locking mechanism for it, so even if it just sits there it doesn't move freely). The biggest problem I still have is that when fully steered, front wheels are touching the plate headlights are sitting on, effectively disconnecting it while moving. I am not sure why is that so - I am positive that everything is done according to instructions and the look of my car matches the original look from pictures in here. But I didn't really build it to play with it, so I can live with this little flaw, even though it bothers me a bit.

Well - anything but red or black. White looks good but as it was pointed out - the white parts will degrade over time. That dark blue is very appealing to me - it's blue, it's dark, yet not black-dark that the details and contours would get lost. Metallic gray is not that bad either, I actually like it very much. Let's wait for the release and see what people from TLG decided to go with. -
I don't think that even without PF you could build this model for under €400 total. While you can get 80-90% of all needed parts from one store, the rest can be very hard to collect. For MOCs of this scale I usually end up buying from 5-6 stores as a result of few days on the bricklink finding all the hard-to-get pieces and combining different stores to satisfy all store terms. For example - if there is a part in a color that is available only in 5 stores on the entire bricklink, and there is only one store in EU which has €60 min buy, there is not much to do than either get in it another color elsewhere or simply buy there for €60. Then I end up moving pieces around the stores until I find the solution where I get all the pieces for the cheapest. And now imagine you have 15 parts like this. Postage/handling/paypal fees can add significant sum here as well. As I was building two models at once I can't say for sure how much this one alone costed me, but my estimation is around €600-650 with middle PF setup. Btw - I always buy my bricks new if available and not overly expensive, you could save up if you are fine with using used bricks. I think the cheapest big scale supercar MOCs would be either Kuipers Predator or original red Audi RS5 DTM by Lipko - they don't use that many rare parts and use very common colors. I have both of them, each of them built for around €400-450.

42056 - Porsche Speculation
filuS replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This looks like a technic model I (we) had been waiting for for a long time. I am not a big Porsche fan but this looks like TLG finally caught up with the best MOCers in supercar department. Be it 200 or 300 Euros - I got to get at least one of these :) As for the color - my wishful thinking is dark blue, that would look awesome (I am longing for a blue supercar). If they are going with one of the 4 official colors - anything but red, please! Purple does not seem likely due to future usability, but white or metallic dark gray (or whatever that colour is named, maybe pearl dark gray) are possible. That metallic gray would be my best bet - white might too dull for such set. -
Audi RS 5 DTM
filuS replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I loved the look of touring cars ever since I first saw them in Gran Turismo 2 many years ago, I had to build this one. However as I already have few red supercars I made some color modifications on this one. At first I was going for blue variant but quickly I realized there simply aren't all necessary pieces/panels in blue. So I went with a black with few red accents, mainly due to the lack of 19L black soft axles (which should become much more available soon, new heavy lift helicopter has 2 of them, so after 15 years, they are back on the market :) ). Plus with all black version, some small details would be unnoticeable. While the result looks very nice, at least to me, it's very hard to capture that on picture, especially on phone camera. But here are some pictures: And here it is together with its younger brother - BMW M4 DTM by BrunoJJ Big thanks to Lipko for creating this model and Thorsten for instructions. Now I will be keeping my fingers crossed for someone to create a blue Mercedes AMG DTM to complete the lineup :) -
Today I finished building this beauty with 2 XL motors, servo motor, 3x lights, 2 battery boxes and 2 IR receivers (v1 for servo+lights, v2 for both XL motors). It looks gorgeous in person, especially with the stickers from Jaap. Sometimes I ended up scratching my head in few steps in instructions but at the end I got it done even with few modifications to steps here and there. However, the car itself does not drive extremely well, it's very easy to trigger some sort of protection on batteries and it stops the car and I need to wait few seconds before car starts moving again. Maybe I should have chosen different gear ratio (I used version A from instructions), but since I am not going to be playing with it very often I don't really mind few hiccups during the ride. And I also did not realize how hard (well, I still can't get it done) it is to calibrate steering with servo motor. So, in the end my car is unable to go straight :D Big thanks to BrunoJJ for this outstanding model, Throsten for instructions and Jaap for the stickers! And together with Lipkos Audi RS5 DTM (in black)
-
Once I build it I will leave a "thank you" note on rebrickable, don't worry ;) As for the black 19L soft axles - let's hope they will become more available once people start building new 42052 - not only it contains one regular 19L black soft axle, it even has one as extra! And for all intents and purposes - we can easily replace them with pneumatic hoses. To Duky: I think middle option would be something like this, or at least I will be doing it in following way: - 2x XL motors + 1x IR Receiver v2 + 1x battery box - 1x servo + 3x lights + 1x battery box - 2x ir remote
-
My setup will be: 2x XL motor 1x servo 2x IR receiver (most likely both V1) - one of motors, one for servo+lights 2x battery box (1 for motors, 1 for lights/servo) I will not be changing anything in gears and see how it goes. Considering I am build this mostly to sit on a shelf, I am not really hung on "max speed", as long as it moves I am fine :D Seeing different color combination for this model, I realized another thing I like about this build - full yellow body work, which gets a point for diversity. White/black/red supercars are pretty common, for obvious reasons - they look great and all, but after 10th red model, it gets a bit "boring". I would also like to have full blue supercar, but there are a lot of extremely rare blue parts (especially soft axles and some pin/axle connectors) and some commonly used panels do not exist in plain blue. That's why I think this yellow BMW and Hartleys blue Pagani Huayra are two of the best display models to build. And luckily, everyone has a chance to build one of them. So - we have Audi RS5 DTM (2014), BMW M4 DTM (2015), maybe year 2016 could the year of Mercedes AMG DTM? :)

A week ago I finished this model, Pirelli edition- the instructions were great, some steps impossible to perform (or risking serious damage on parts by bending themm) but other than that is fine. The only thing I don't really like how it's done is the roof, it is too flexible and it has tendency to change shape a bit during manipulation. I loved that it took me whole to finish it, great fun I had. I think I should have made the black hoses on sides of the windshield a bit shorter, but other than that I think it looks stunning. As you can see, in some cases I used less expensive color combinations (mostly 43093 pins - black ones are very expensive) but in general I tried to stick to how it was designed. I even used the chrome parts, too bad that engine is not visible at all :( Some pictures: Great job, both on the model and instructions.

[MOC] Simple Supercar
filuS replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This car looks very good, in general I am not fan of cabrios, but this one caught my eye immediately. Too bad it would be impossible to build it in blue, I am longing for a blue (or at least blue/black) supercar but the lack of blue panels is against me it seems (well, maybe combining different shades of panels could be a way, I am just not sure how that would turn out). -
I just went through the instructions and nothing struck me as "obviously wrong" - but then again, I would have to be building it to figure some mistakes out. Only thing that I noticed is that 4x 19L yellow soft axles are missing from rebrickable parts inventory. Btw - in comments on rebrickable page, Thorsten claims that he is working on new instructions, so maybe he is now correcting those errors you mentioned earlier.
-
As I thought I made a mistake in one of the first steps and had to dismantle whole car in order to get to the core of transmission :) And when I rebuilt it back, few pieces were left on my table, so I forgot about few things this time :D But everything works now, everything is in place and car is sturdy, so I have no need to rebuild it once again. Also, today I finally received my custom Orange Chrome wheels, I think they look very good on this car :)
-
I exported partslist from LDD, to make some price estimation how much will this model cost me (my secret wish is to keep it under 600 euros but I am starting to doubt that), and I started with panels. And that's where I stopped - there was 47712 fairing panel, which does not even exist in yellow. But after some investigation I found out that it should be yellow 32528 instead. Most of those smaller parts and liftarms should not be a big of a deal, even if few counts would be off here and there. As for chrome parts - I am not a big fan of silver chrome wheels on light models (white, yellow, light gray), and this yellow beauty screams for black wheels. Aurimax makes 56x34mm wheels in black chrome but I don't think it will be a significant step over regular black ones. Maybe titanium chrome wheels from Bubul (different guy who makes chrome lego parts) would do the trick. As for the black model - I suggest you take a look at orange/red chrome wheels from Bubul, especially those red ones look gorgeous with black cars. EDIT: brunojj1 - your brickshelf gallery for this car is not public anymore
-
I did not mean to pressure anyone into doing more than they feel like doing - I understand that you already put a lot of effort into making this model and LDD file and that instructions are being made by someone else. As for the parts list - I am practically gonna buy every single piece for this car, I don't disassemble my built models - so every MOC I build leads into a day or two on rebrickable and combining shops to get everything as cheap/quick as possible. And even if I reused what I already have - I don't have anything in yellow :) That's why I asked for a partslist - it takes some time to gather everything and I can't wait to build this one and the best way is to get everything at once (especially when it comes to rare parts). However if you say that partslist from building instructions (if I am not mistaking Thorsten50 offered his services to make those) will differ from the one exported from LDD, I will rather wait for the final list. I am also thinking about omitting all the PF functions, hopefully no special adjustments will be needed and overall rigidity of the model will be maintained. Anyway, as I already said (and many others before me), outstanding build, using "not-so-usual" yellow/black combination - I love it :)
-
If some day instructions for this model come out, I will surely build it - it looks outstandingly good and even if I am not the biggest fan of yellow cars, this one is a must have for me :) EDIT: or maybe it will be possible to build it from LDD file, have to take a look at that. I am wondering - is it possible to export a list of all parts so I could buy them? Or maybe there is a list somewhere (like on rebrickable for example) and I just missed the link?
