In LDCad you can set up and move parts to a favorite palette. In LDD you can set up a custom palette from a specific set/file. Is there any way in LDD to create a 'Favorite palette', then to find a part in LDD, use it, and then move/add it to that custom palette. I know I could go and build a file of selected parts and then import it as a custom palette, but I was looking for a way to do it in LDD by itself. Thanx, Ed

Offer 'Builder Packs' of bulk technic parts. Not individual pieces in bulk. Example a pack of 100 -15long beams, 50-13, 25-11, 25-9,25-7,25-5,25-3, all these in one box. The same for bent arms, axles, connectors, pins etc. This approach would allow TLG to produce them in their standard production environment, it would be just another kit.

Developing drawing after prototyping.
knotian replied to knotian's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Alasdair- The MOC is already done, and works. I want to have drawings for rebuilding and documentation. -
A question of procedure and technique. I am developing some complex models by prototyping with a (just for now) limited parts inventory. I may have to dismantle in order to have parts for the rest of the series.I would like to have construction drawings. I'll be using LDCad as a tool. I'd like some opinions from readers as to the best way to progress. I'd probably just start from one side and assemble a layer by layer drawing. Another way I thought about would be to take a series of pictures (JPG's) as each part is removed and then reverse them as a guide to doing the drawing. How would any of you go about accomplishing this task? I'm sure somebody has done this 'backwards' exercise. Thanx, Ed

I am not a pro, so my pictures are very basic. I've found that a colored bed sheet seems to work well for me. -
[HELP] Laptop or Tablet for PDF Building Instructions?
knotian replied to Andy D's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I use and I'd suggest the laptop, mainly for screen size. In case you have not noticed it yet, there are times when you have to zoom instructions to double check pin orientation. I'm going to have to be honest, that I am not an Mac user, and that my main system with three monitors is what II use for development work with PDF reference material, LDCad, and BrickLink sharing one window spread on the three monitors. I know there are catalogs available for sites such as BrickLink. I would like to know if there is a list, similar to the one that lugnet had, but up to date, that can be downloaded as a resource for design work? -OR- Is there a list of the Ldraw objects that has a picture of it drawn along with the number? Thanks, Ed

Basic MOC techniques
knotian replied to MrAwesome's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Google "No-Starch Press". They have several books on LEGO building techniques and they are available in PDF or print. The main one for building is "The unofficial LEGO Technic Builders Guide". Excellent material for MOC's - transmissions, steering, suspensions, mechanics etc., as well as good hints for how to scale and build a model. It may be available at other on-line resources, but they are a good company to deal with. Ed -
WeDo 2.0 - The future of PF
knotian replied to BusterHaus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is great - It looks like the PF / Mindstorms wall is coming down. One universal approach from We-do through EV3 and BEYOND!!! -
Change the Rechargeable EV3 Battery so that the charging plug is at the same end of the EV3 as the PC Connector. This would aid in the development process when both the charger and the PC may need to be plugged in at the same time.In a compact MOC it means that the PC Cable must be left attached to the EV3, since the charging cable cannot be removed from the wall unit.

It seems to me that Lego is missing a solid bet in not integrating PF with EV3. With the price of Bluetooth capable tablets so low, they could re-brand someone's bottom model, replace the IR with a two-way sbrick type device and have an awesome product line. Conceivably the remote / computer / robot could all be in one hand held / mountable device. That would also allow them to have only one line of motors, one line of power, etc.

Konajra's Mocs
knotian replied to Konajra's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Arjan- I was a ship modeller [ Scratch, wood, 1700-1800, working at 1:24]. I love the work you are doing. Keep it up! 3 Cheers for studded beams Ed -
Produce Two Technic Resource Kits. The first with Beams and connectors. The second with axles, wheels, gears. Large quantities with a price of $250-350. That keeps it in the 'flagship' range. Direct orders through Lego Store would receive a discount on multiple sets. The first set would be available all in one color, with several choices.

Technivor- Very nice!! I'm starting on a series of underground equipment; continuous miner, face hauler, roof bolter and multi function scoop. Modeling with a height constraint is a challenge. Modelling something 36 feet long and only 30 inches high is fun. If you continue in this vein (no pun intended) drop me a note and we can stay in touch. BusterHaus- Do you have the link to that community Ed Ed

Opinion on Status of SBrick

BOY---- DID I START SUMPTIN!!! :classic: I appreciate all the views. I believe I have my answer. Ed -
Peppermint_M Thanks for the reply. My original post said ".....rather than having to go to one of the social media zoos." I did not call this form a social media zoo. This is a good forum. I thought I had a good idea, based on my trying to find information. I felt that 241 posts was a lot of activity. If that is not the case, so be it. Again, thanks Ed

How do I contact the Forum Administrators without having to go to social media? Thank You Ed

[EV3] Programming
knotian replied to schor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Steve, I was referring to the one from Lego that the Education Set uses. Just spend some time with Google and you should find plenty of programs. Ed -
I did not mean in EuroBricks, which I do not consider a social forum, I meant Facebook, google groups, etc. I'd like to see EuroBricks as the Go TO forum. There are already many (241) topics, that must be searched with a multiple key since "EV3" is not allowed in the search engine. I was thinking that there might be multiple topics at one time and that a sub-forum would allow them to continue in sequence rather than having multiple responses in one topic. For instance a topic named "Mindstorm Programming" containing responses to sensors, logic, and custom 'my blocks',etc., would be very confusing. Likewise having them scattered through out the Mindstorm forum would (IMHO) hard to find. I'm wondering if the lack of a specific place for programming questions might be limiting the participation. A break out of Technic and mindstorms might be a good start. Since a search on "Model Team" gives no responses. Is there a person or place that I can make this as a formal request to the administrators.

Just ran across this. http://www.wimp.com/lego-motor-home/

What is the procedure for requesting a sub-forum? I'd like to see one just for the technical questions about mindstorm programming in just the lego distributed language. I believe it would be a good addition rather than having to go to one of the social media zoos. Ed

[EV3] Programming
knotian replied to schor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Schor Ah-Ah - A fellow greybeard! Did my first program in 1960 and was hooked until I retired. Why any sane ex would voluntarily get back into this rat race is inconceivable!! Take a look at the color sorter program to see relatively complex use. Any way - I haven't tried what you asked about, but to my understanding it's just a matter of running the data wires. Drop me a message and we can keep in touch. I wouldn't mind a programming forum for just the graphical language. Ed -
[EV3] Programming
knotian replied to schor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Google No Starch Press - they have excellent ( I bought 2 ) books with good details, examples, and supplemental robots for testing. Googling for downloadable books also gets results, but of questionable legality. No starch's books also include an PDF with the price of the Hard Copy, with the PDF available alone at a reduced price. AND NO I don't work for them. Ed -
Have you ever felt judged for liking LEGO?
knotian replied to Chilly_Productions's topic in Community
I am 77 and just returning from the dark side. Being older and with a slight attitude I've used the looks to start conversations. I'm into the robotics and technic so use it as an excuse to tell them about that. I really had fun at a show when the grandparents accompanied the family. They like talking to an older person.- 107 replies
