Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Alucard1977 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Funny you should sat that. That is exactly what I was thinking. Even my son said, "Don't you think my school looks like the Town Hall Building". Having said that, I would still prefer lego release a school. It's cheaper then hunting down another Town Hall. -
How long ago did you order?

This is exactly what I was envisioning. That looks great. I hope lego starts using these. I mean, it adds so much to a set. Thanks EROL.

!Lego 10190 Market Street New Build & Review!
Alucard1977 replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
I have to agree with this sentiment. Part of me really wanted to get all 10 modulars. I currently have 7. However, seeing as this will run me approximately $700, I may need to skip it. It does not feel quiet right as you say. I am not sure what is off about it, but it feels off. Especially next to the other modulars. Maybe it's because I have never seen something that looks like this anywhere. For me, this is one of those things where I am more picky and judgmental on something because of the cost. At $150-$160, I would give it a chance. At $700, I look at all the other Lego stuff me and my son can enjoy first before this. -
I don't currently have any sets with light bricks, so I don't know if they are as good as I think they are. However, after building the DO, I was slightly disappointed with the fact that there is no light in any of the rooms. I figure using a light brick in each room would actually work pretty well and add an additional sense of realism. IE the barber shop being closed by the pool hall and the detectives office still being open. So I guess my question is, why is Lego not using these in modulars? Also, is there simple work arounds that you guys use to light up modulars that are hidden well like a light brick?

That May 11th changed to should ship in 30 days again. My order also reads waiting for new stock. Let's hope it is May 11th stock.

Actually you would find stores that look like that in Chinatown in NYC. So I think you did a great job. Only thing is the green round elements. I know you were going for bamboo, but I think the PC has me brain washed that should be red.

I agree, I saw some hate around this set and wondered why. Sure the set is tight. But I actually appreciate all that it does. Granted I haven't built the pet shop, but the pet shop looks to be just as tight as this is. So I am not sure why this would get hate and that wouldn't. From my transformers collecting, all I know is, sometimes things get more respect once they are retired. Maybe the same thing will happen here. But I am by no means an expert on these. We only did one. I think I can judge this set in comparison once we build the other 6 sets. (I was lucky enough to find everything but the GG, CC, and MS). All I know is that the build was very enjoyable.

Wow. This sounds like a labor of love. A labor that paid off. I would love to build something like that. I just don't think I would have the patience to collect all of those pieces. As an aside, how heavy is that thing? 30lbs? More? Also, are you forever ruined by this module? Will every thing by comparison be too small? I guess not, since you don't have a place for it, but I worry about building something like this, and thinking Modular's were just too small now.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Alucard1977 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I 100% agree with this thread. I love the idea of another 32x16 set. I also love the idea of 2 modulars a year. Granted the space to store them will run out quickly. Funny enough, with this whole Museum discussion, my son today said, "wouldn't it be cool if they made a museum"? What I want is a school. Think that would be cool. My sons school is from the early 1900s, and the architecture and design on his school would match well with Town Hall and the rest of the sets. Plus that will get my son off my back about MOCing his school. LOL. I don't think we are ready for MOC just yet. -
My son and I finally completed this build this morning. I let him do all the building and help where needed so this took us about 12 hours or so. This is our first modular, and I have to say, it was a great experience building this set. I am not sure if I was influenced by the designer video and all, but when building this set, I could see all the stories come to life. The best comparison I could make, is that building this set was like reading a good book. Each component and each bag has it's own little story. From the friends playing pool. To Al, the cookie runner cutting the hair of a cop who has no idea about what is going on. To the detective agency, with a love afair happening? Possibly? Finally, the cook house. With that no good cat about ready to eat the merchandise. All great stuff. The thing is, I know that sparked more then my imagination, it sparked my sons as well. He would stop building and say, "Daddy, I am gonna smuggle me some cookies!". "Daddy, you think these two are married?". "Look at that cat, she is saying, 'I WANT THOSE COOKIES'". So a great set. Sure it maybe small and adult hands don't fit too well, but the highlights of the fan, the mirror and the water tower are great. BTW, does anyone else have a problem with the mirror staying put? Ours keeps tilting forward. I looked at the instructions multiple times, and I don't think we built anything incorrectly.

That is true. Poorly worded by me. When I mean love, I mean the love you put in when creating the model for a dog. Maybe I am completely wrong, but the Dogs we have in my sons collection are very still looking. They are not dynamic and playful. I think a dog owner would bring out some more character from a dog model. Cat Models seem to always bring out the personality of the cat. With dogs, I don't get the same feeling.
-
But that dog is from 14 years ago. Is there more examples like that? So I took a look at brick link, and it is pretty limited. I mean dogs beg, dogs crouch the same as cats do when they play and every dog owner knows the head tilt a dog does. I am not seeing much of that represented. But it was good to see the Dalmatians. Great for some fire fighter sets.
-
So I don't have too much experience in comparison to everyone else here when it comes to building sets. However, in the experience I have, I notice that Lego has a lot more love for cats then it does for dogs. Cats seem to be in a lot more sets. In addition when Lego does a Cat, it tends to be more expressive or posed better. When they release a dog, it seems pretty flat. The dog is not dynamically posed or anything else. Not playful and so forth. I get that lego figures live in confined spaces which are more prone to cat ownership. However, I would love to see more love for dogs. Am I alone in this thinking?

How do you control your spending & what do you collect
Alucard1977 replied to Seeky's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I wish I had some wise words of wisdom for you. I don't. For me, I find that once I get my fill of something, my desire for said something dies down. I am a HARD CORE Transformers collector. I mean in the thousands of dollars a year. I feel like my collection is now completed and I am satisfied. With my son building Lego, I found myself getting interested in Lego. At this point I am getting things for him, and enjoying it with him. So while it is affecting my spending again, I think it's worth it. Father son time building Lego is an investment rather a waste of money. Or at least that is how I justify the spending and the spreadsheet I have to make my version of a perfect lego city, -
This is so funny on so many levels: 1- I am sure you or your wife has used terms with him such as "serious as a heart attack" "can you sit down" "Let's make sure that this doesn't happen again." 2- That he is so serious about this Get a new set, and say "oh oh, there is no room for this Modular building or whatever, what do we do?"

I was going to wait for my points to hit to order the petshop, but I have a sinking feeling those May 11th ship dates they are listing is for the last batch. So I pulled the trigger now. I just hope that the Palace Cinema is not retired before next month. I want to get some money saved for that.

If you really want to add to the authenticity of a NYC subway, you gotta get yourself at least a 5 or more rats for those subways. Also, have you guys given any thought to a third rail. Growing up in NYC, we were always taught to stay clear of the third rail.
-
Wow, that looks incredible. That Ferrari is wow as well.
-
Actually my son does the building and I help where I can. He is the one that likes keeping the lego city looking like the lego city. Even though he caught wind of bricklink and wants me to get him a whole bunch of pieces so that he can build his own modular building. The kid is freaking 6! When he is older, I will do that for him. For now, I know he will get frustrated when it is not like the other lego's he has.
-
I am waiting to get some more points on my CC for this month, then I will have the $$ to get the Petshop on May 1st. I just hope it last till then. So soon, so very soon.

So I am pretty new to Legos and enjoy building them with my son. At the moment, I am trying to do some catch up on Creator Houses and looking at different ones. One of the things that struck me is how many don't have interiors. Then for Easter, I got my son the Easter egg painting set, which I thought would make a great interior. So I was wondering, what other sets are there that can be used just for interiors? Also, do you guys think an interior sub class would sell well for Lego? Different scenes from around the house that can be put into these older houses. Would love to hear your thoughts.

This is so insanely beautiful.

That's awesome, you used other pieces besides the pieces from this set correctly. I have that set, and don't remember those pieces. Still looks great though.
