Pharaoh's mummys vs Series 3 mummys
autobrick replied to Solscud007's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
As others have mentioned, the problem with the Series 3 Mummy is the colour scheme. The mummy's white wrappings seem to indicate that it was freshly wrapped, which clashes with the mummy's skin, which has already rotted green. This minifig would have been better if the colours were toned down; the wrappings could be a light brown/grey (giving it an dusty, weathered look) and the mummy's skin could be a dark brown (representing the mummy's dry, mummified state). Also, instead of having green peas for eyes, it could have gaping eyesockets. I would love to see this too. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion
autobrick replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Interesting theory, although I wonder why they would intentionally decrease their margins for the first two (and a bit of the third) series with a lower MSRP. I suppose they wanted to 'hook' American consumers before jacking up the price for the later series? However, your theory doesn't seem to hold through for some of the Target exclusive polybags (especially the ones with the minifigs), which rarely come to Canada. No offence, but it sounds like you've been spoiled by the cheap Lego prices in the US. Paying 2.99 USD to me sounds fairly reasonable and is more in line with the rest of the word. Consider the prices in the rest of the world; Canada: 2.99 CAD (2.95 USD) , Denmark: 19.95 DKK (3.50 USD; I know they're made in China), United Kingdom: 1.99 (3.06 USD), Australia: 3.99 AUD (3.99 USD; poor guys!). If you want some idea of the price structure in the rest of the world, just add 20%-50% (or even more, in some cases) to the US MSRP. For example, the Grand Emporium is 149.99 USD, but in Canada it is 199.99 CAD (196.17USD), and in Denmark, the birthplace of Lego, it is 1399 DKK (245.70 USD!). Sure, there may be VAT, other taxes, duties, etc, but there is no denying that Lego is significantly cheaper in the US. You guys have it good, so hearing you whine about a $1 increase (oh, the horror! ) is kind of annoying to be honest. Hmm... anybody get this to work? -
I was just browsing Bricklink when I ran across these three Harry Potter sets, back from 2001: 4721: Hogwarts Classrooms (Bricklink) 4722: Gryffindor House (Bricklink) 4723: Diagon Alley Shops (Bricklink) These three sets have a completely different feel from the rest of the Harry Potter line, which raised my curiousity. To me, they look like a cross between Harry Potter and Belville (many pink & orange parts). Judging by the fact that each set has a picture of only Hermione on the front, it seems Lego was trying to market these towards girls. The builds themselves are minimal, and they include walls made of cardboard (first time I've seen this). Also, it seems they were wrapped in cellophane when new (why?), which is something else I've never seen with a Lego set. Was this some sort of experiment by TLG? Does anybody know the story behind these three sets? I've searched here and a couple of other places, and nothing really comes up. Edit: Oops, looks like the title of the thread got messed up. It would be great if a moderator could fix them up (I can't edit them). The thread was supposed to be titled "Three odd sets from the early days of the Harry Potter theme" and subtitled "Can you tell me anything about them?"

Does anybody know how airline promotional sets work? I assume that they sell them through those catalogues (the ones filled with watches, perfumes and other things) found in the back of the seats (?). I've never seen Lego in those catalogues, but it's been years since I've been on a plane and I guess the promotional set would only be available through specific airlines in Europe (?). I really like the look of the Bank transfer set (almost certain buy), but I find the police chase to be a bit disappointing (certain pass). It is interesting how the built a sidewalk corner for the speed camera and traffic lights in this set, when they usually would have these free standing in previous sets.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion
autobrick replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Oh, bother... For those saying that the Series 3 Minifigs are going to have higher prices, keep in mind that all of this originated from a single comment on Brickset posted by Sword2211. Go to the Canadian, Eh? thread to read what I think about this rumour. Basically (edited for context): No need to get upset about something that is not confirmed. -
If the US MSRP was raised to $2.99 (from the original $1.99), then I would agree that the minifigs would be $3.99 in Canada. However, we don't know if A) the US MSRP was raised, or if B) stores are simply taking advantage of the heightened demand. Keep in mind that the minifigures were already very popular, and demand has only increased due to three things: the Christmas season, exclusivity to TRU & Fred Meyer and being brand new. Stores can charge extra, and people will still buy them. Personally, I think we are looking at situation B, and that prices will go back to the original MSRP once we see wider distribution. As for the rumours regarding the employee at Legoland California, let's pray to the Lego Gods wait until we get more information. Keep in mind that there could have been a miscommunication, or that $2.99 is the sale price just for Legoland California (never been there, but since when has a theme park have cheap prices?). Besides, it raises the question: Why didn't Lego increase the US MSRP before they started to sell in the US?
-
I saw that on Brickset too. Hopefully, there was some sort of miscommunication; let's wait until we get more news, from a reputable source. I'm sure Lego isn't foolish enough to raise prices to $3.99, because the demand (especially by casual fans & parents, the biggest purchasers) is going to fall sharply. Even AFOLs, who are the most resistant to price increases, are saying that $3.99 is too high a price. Of course, the good part will be that Series 3 will be abundant in supply and you will be able to get all the minifgures you want, if you can afford them! However, I'm still confident that Canadian MSRP will be at $2.99. Mostly
-
Do you have any solid evidence? I'm pretty sure that Canadian MSRP will be $2.99 CAD and most retailers will stick with that. I beleve that the US MSRP is still $1.99 USD and that the US TRUs just raised their price to take advantage of the demand (US TRUs seems to do this more Canadian TRUs). Also, I'm fairly sure that Fred Meyer (chain in the US where Series 3 was first found) is still selling at $1.99 USD. Of course, this is all conjecture.

This made me laugh! However, those Mandalorian BP faces made me... Not being a big CW fan, the only set that interests me this wave is 7929 The Battle Of Naboo. Does anybody have any idea, roughly, when images of the 2011 summer sets would leak? Sometime in February, March?
-
Too bad the same can't be said north of the border in Canada. The sales recently have really tapered off, and were a lot better a month ago. It seems Amazon.com has a ton of killer Lego deals, but of course, they don't even ship Lego to Canada (Amazon.ca doesn't even sell Lego...). Not to mention that even at sale price - which are rarely more than 25% off - we are still paying the equivalent of US MSRP (or more), despite the decent exchange rate. I've only bought one set in the past month, so I guess the upside is I've managed to save some money for 2011 sets, when they do go on sale!

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 4 poll
autobrick replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Which is your favourite collectable minifigure inside series 4? I voted 'Bio-Hazard Personnel', but honestly all the minifigs are winners. Which current Collectable Minifigure Series do you like best or do you just love them all? I voted 'All Series' because each series has their strong and weak parts. I have no overall favourite, although Series 3 would be my overall least favourite. What is the most important attribute that must be considered in a good Collectable Minifigures Series? I voted 'Availability of new parts such as torsos, hairpiece, accessories, etc' but it was really a tie with 'Variety and design of new unexplored themes'. The best part about the Collectible Minifigures is that it gives us new minifigs/pieces that we would otherwise never see in a regular Lego set. Do you think Series 4 is an improvement from all previous 3 series? Yes, because series 4 is arguably the first series to not have any 'Demolition Dummies' or 'Ringmasters'. Even the weaker figs have good points and I wouldn't mind getting multiples of them. The only misgiving I have is of the quality of the minifigs. Hopefully this will be improved. Hey, WhiteFang, are you planing on creating reviews for Series 3 and 4? I really enjoyed your previous reviews, and found them very helpful and informative! -

This. I don't see why everybody is in a frenzy over Series 3 Figs (especially considering the general consensus that this wave is fairly weak). It is widely established that Series 3 is going to see even greater production numbers, relative to the first two series, so paying double the MSRP seems pretty ridiculous to me. Just wait until mid-January and I can all but guarantee that you will find them in greater quantities, at MSRP. Patience is a virtue! To be honest, I have a feeling that a lot of Series 3 figs are going to be 'shelf-warmers'. As Ogre mentioned, it is still relatively easy to find Series 2 figs, if you know where to look, and Series 3 will be in even greater numbers. By the way, I'm guessing that Canadians aren't going to see these until the new year? -
Ahhh.. Didn't even know there was a thread for Canadians, until Ogre posted about it in the CMF4 thread. Bookmarked! As for the rumors regarding the potential Lego store at Sherway, I am stoked. We could definitely use a Lego store in the GTA; when will we get more information? Also: is it just me, or has there been a real lack of good Lego sales recently? I would love to pick up some of the new City/Pharaoh's Quest sets, but I refuse to pay full MSRP, especially when seeing the Canadian prices in comparison with US prices.

WOW! Series 4 is definitely the best series yet. So many new pieces... This more than makes up for the lackluster Series 3! -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion

When I first saw the preliminary pictures, I was not very impressed with Series 3. But after seeing these new pictures, I can't wait to pick up a complete set, plus a couple of extras! I still maintain that Series 3 is significantly weaker than Series 1 and 2. (if this is the actual distribution and not a fluke/tampered box) Lego should reduce the amount of minifigs per wave to 15 and instead place four of each inside each box. Especially now that the barcodes have been removed. -
I quickly skimmed through this topic and saw a lot of great ideas, but I was surprised to see so few mentions of Republic Commandos from the game Star Wars: Republic Commando. It is truly a great game. Delta Three-Eight or "Boss" Delta Four-Oh or "Fixer" Delta Oh-Seven or "Sev" Delta Six-Two or "Scorch" Also, some Kaminoans would be nice I have a feeling we will never see the commandos as the odds are slim they are going to make minifigs for a game five years old (and there are no news for a sequel ). I know there are some custom minifigs being made out there, but it would cost at least $120 to buy all four! This made me literally laugh out loud!

Thanks to kevin1990 over at Toys N Bricks, we now have higher resolution images of the boxes. (They are marked as confidential, however). 7305 7306 7307 7325 7326 7327 Lookin' Good!

Which is your favourite 2011 set with pictures?
autobrick replied to Lord Embo's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The only set that really interests me in this wave is 7929 The Battle of Naboo. How can I resist new Gungans + 10 Battle Droids? (I don't have any Battle Droids! ) It's interesting how so many people are praising Jar Jar Binks, a character that was (nearly) universally despised! EDIT: And now I am a 'Vassal'. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 3 discussion

I think the big problem that everyone has with the Space Alien is that the piece used for the head is so closely associated with Space Police/Squidman. While this isn't a bad thing, I'm sure most of us were expecting a specially created alien that would fit into many MOCs without screaming SPACE POLICE!!!. (I have a feeling a majority of the people who like the Space Alien are fans of Space Police). What I don't understand is why nobody is upset with the Sumo Wrestler. The Sumo Wrestler has, from good to bad: Potentially good hair. It is difficult to judge from the images. Already existing accessory, in a different color. If we get the statues in silver, this could be a positive point (Gold->Silver->Bronze) Hardly noteworthy head Uninspired torso (yellow, with two lines), with simple, all yellow arms Extremely easy to recreate legs Surely the Sumo Wrestler is the weakest? At least the Space Alien looks somewhat new! I had formed my own themes, and they are quite similar to yours, but not as in depth. Here they are: Circus Circus Clown, Gorilla Suit Guy, Magician, Mime, Ringmaster, Japanorama (Figures closely associated with Japan) Karate Master, Ninja, Samurai Warrior, Sumo Wrestler, Movie Monsters (Because they are quite cartoonish-looking, rather than scary looking, bringing to mind monsters from old movies) Mummy, Robot (just take off his bucket helmet), Vampire, Witch, Zombie Space (This category didn't exist until Series 3) Space Alien, Space Man, Space Villain Sports Baseball Player, Cheerleader, Downhill Skier, Race Car Driver, Snowboarder, Tennis Player Town (ie. Characters that inhabit 'the real world') Disco Stu, Diver, Fisherman, Lifeguard, Motorcycle Cop, Nurse, Pop Star, Rapper, Skater, Surfer Wild West Cowboy, Mr. Maracas, Super Wrestler (Think Nacho Libre), Tribal Chief, Tribal Hunter, Misc. Everyone else. -
Well, I've just about given up on the Death Star, unless anyone else has anything to add for/against it. Right now, I am looking at possibly buying a magnet set (either Ackbar, Leia & C-3PO or Boba Fett, Slave Leia & Royal Guard). If anyone can comment on whether magnet fig quality has improved recently I would greatly appreciate it. I've done some searches, but they offer conflicting or old information. Of course, I could go to Bricklink for the figs, but then I could possibly end up buying a magnet fig at regular fig prices! I am mostly looking at Ackbar and Boba Fett, although the other figs are not bad. Also, has anybody else noticed that Ackbar's torso isn't sitting completely flush on his legs in the picture at Lego S@H? Not something you would expect to see on Lego's official site. After looking at reviews of Darth Vader's TIE fighter, it has grown on me and I think I will pick one up. As for the Battle of Endor, I haven't seen that in-store for months... Are you using the 20% off Chapters coupon? I'm also getting the Firetruck with this deal. I personally would go for the Repair Truck over the Tow Truck, but that's just my personal preference. I have both and I find the orange-ness of the tow truck a bit gaudy (but it does have more parts).
-
Having just recently come out of my dark ages, I have found Bricklink to be an invaluable resource, visiting nearly every day. I could not imagine what the AFOL community would be like without Bricklink. Although I did not know about him until now, I can't help but feel that the Lego community has lost something great. I send my condolences to his family. R.I.P. Dan Jezek

Dracula's Castle ("The Master's Call")
autobrick replied to Mark Kelso's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Wow... What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is phenomenal! If there were higher resolution pictures, this would make fine Halloween themed wallpaper! -
Hello All! I am currently looking to expand my OT Star Wars collection and I am considering buying the 10188 Death Star. Right now the only OT sets I have are the Hoth battlepacks, Wampa Cave and Echo base. I do not have any other Star Wars minifigs and I would love to pick up some other characters (Darth Vader, R2-D2, Yoda, Chewie, etc.). What I like about the 10188 Death Star is the fact that it includes many of the significant characters from OT, all in one set. Also, each section of the set is like a mini-vignette, which is really cool. However the price is $500 CAD + $65 CAD tax. If it was $300, there would be no question, but at $500? I could buy a lot of Lego for the money. A lot. However, if I don't buy the Death Star, I will have to buy from the current line-up in-store, which I am not so keen on. The 6212 X-wing has nice figs, but I never was a big fan of the ship from the movies and it seems pretty expensive ($80 CAD for a four year old set with only 415 pieces?!). 8017 Darth Vader's Tie Fighter has Darth Vader, but again, I never really liked TIE fighters either. Slave I is too expensive considering I would be buying the set just for Boba Fett. The AT-ATs (motorized and not) don't have the 'must-have-it' factor so I will pass on those. I do like the 8092 Landspeeder, so I will get this if I don't get the Death Star. But what else to get? I would rather not buy all of the minifigures from Bricklink. Maybe a couple (Ackbar!) but I really do want some sets. At this point, I am leaning towards not getting the Death Star, but what would I get otherwise?
