What's the worst thing you've done to get a minifig?
autobrick replied to dark1san's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Fixed that for you; it's the proper way to end a story like that. Anyways the worst minifig was pay too much for a couple of minifigures (Jessie+Rex+Hamn+Bullseye). I don't remember what the total cost was, but with shipping it ended up being a lot more than I intended. All I need are Zurg, Twitch and Stinky Pete to finish off my Toy Story minifig collection. -
Thanks for the review, StoutFiles. Unfortunately (but fortunately for my wallet), your review has confirmed what I had suspected; the much anticipated 2011 Hoth set is a bit of a dud. Compared to Anakin and Sebulba's Podracers, which is part of the same summer wave (and the same price), this set is quite poor. The Podracers set has more pieces, better set design and great playability (for the kids ). In my opinion, even the minifigs in the Podracers set are better; I don't think there are many who would prefer any of these minifigs over Watto, (or Sebulba or Wald)? Even If I were to find this set for half price (Canadian MSRP is $119.99, so that would be $60), this set would still only be 'okay'. There are a lot of better sets (and the upcoming Super Heroes theme) which are more worthy of our hard-earned cash. However, on the positive side, the minifigs are nice (not great) and the parts would make a nice start for a proper Echo base. Still, this set is easily the worst 2011 Star Wars set (but that's just my opinion).

Holy crap! This is great news!

Do you have any more information about the 'Destination' line of key chains? i did a quick search and nothing came up. It would be nice if they had key chains for countries all over the world (and even nicer if they were released as regular minifigs as well).

Thanks for this. I was hoping for a double VIP point event sometime soon; how else am I supposed to get my hands on the Death Star before it is discontinued? That ADU Jetpack polybag is nowhere as good as the current free set in my opinion (30062 Target Practice), but 30062 is one of a kind. At least the cost of entry is lower ($35 vs $75), but that doesn't include free shipping.

How long do clearance sets stay available?
autobrick replied to tafkatb's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
To be honest, the Prince of Persia sale on S@H is not all that great (20% off in Canada, but may be different elsewhere). PoP was never very popular as a theme, and I have read many reports of it going on sale/clearance. For example, Toys R Us had 50% off PoP on Boxing day in Canada (and Lego never goes more than 30% off in Canada). I had a coupon so I managed to pick up Battle of Alamut for $45+taxes . My suggestion for anybody who is interested in PoP is to wait; another, better sale on PoP is inevitable. -
That Winter Village Post Office is simply excellent! I can't quite tell if the instruments are brick-built or new molds (leaning towards the former, but hoping for the latter), but either way, very nice. The post office itself looks great, and the post truck looks lovely. Look at the assortment of minifigures and accessories; quite possibly the best Winter Village set yet! I am not as enthusiastic about the Camper Van, but I will wait until we get some better pictures or a review before passing final judgment. Thanks for the pictures, astra!

I really hope this rumour about a new line of figures for the new girls theme is false (but since it has popped up twice, I am not so optimistic). I find it strange that TLC would create another set of figures for a couple of reasons: Creating new molds are expensive; why invest (risk!) money by creating a new set of figures when minifigures have a strong, proven track record? Minifigs parts (such as headgear, torsos & legs) likely won't be compatible, which decreases the pool of swappable parts. (Hate to stereotype, but girls do like to play dress-up). They likely won't be visually congruent with minifigs and thus will look strange when put side by side. This will bother AFOLs more than kids, but still an issue. Of course, I will reserve final judgment until we get more information, but this has really dampened my enthusiasm.

I think this is the first time I've ever looked forward to buying a calendar; hopefully it will be sold in Lego stores/online. Thanks for the review, Mariann Asanuma!

Carded Lego Indiana Jones Mini Figure Kenner Style
autobrick replied to markpoon's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
This is ridiculously awesome; this could pass as an official promotional figure. Very cool The only nitpick is that it says that the knees are capable of articulation; otherwise this is perfect. Are you going to make more? -
My brother was supposed to come along with me, but he slept in so I left late by myself. When I saw that the line to enter the store stretched all the way to the main square, I went 'Aw, hell naw' and left. I'll go back on a weekday, when it isn't as crowded.

REVIEW - Cars 2 - 8423-1: World Grand Prix Racing Rivalry
autobrick replied to lightningtiger's topic in LEGO Licensed
I have to say, I am not a very big fan of McQueen's wheels; the gold-on-white combination does not look very good. On the other hand, Francesco looks very nice, and this is the cheapest set he comes in, so I may end up picking this set. Like the others have mentioned, Lego has a strong line-up this year so I won't have much to spend on the Cars theme, but I know I'll pick up a couple of sets. Anyways, thanks for the review! -
REVIEW - Cars 2 - 8200-1: Radiator Springs Lightning McQueen
autobrick replied to lightningtiger's topic in LEGO Licensed
As I see it, that is biggest flaw with this rendition of Lightning McQueen; having the wheels and side panels stick out really detracts from the appearance. Seeing as the printed hood/fender piece is unlikely to see much use outside of the Cars theme, it would have been nice to see it made a bit wider so it could cover the wheels and lead seamlessly into the sides. The same goes for the rear piece. Thanks for the review, LightningTiger! -
This looks great! I wonder what the official name will be (as 'Pet Shop' would only be describing half of the set). I can't wait to pick it up!

Out of the whole Pirates of the Caribbean line, this set is the one I anticipate the most. Great minifigs, great pieces, great tavern and the carriages are not bad. The greatest flaws in my opinion are (1) the high price (unavoidable) and (2) the ugly pearl gold coins/bars; why aren't they chrome as depicted on the box? Thanks for the review, JimButcher!

Judging by previous exclusive minifig sets (Beachwood, OH, Indianapolis, IN & Costa Mesa, CA), I'm assuming that the minifigs are going to fairly generic, which is a shame. It would be nice to receive something that is both exclusive and region specific. One recent example I liked is the Mini Nyhavn for the Copenhagen store, which has exclusive parts in addition to effectively capturing the look of Nyhavn. Anybody know how busy Lego store grand openings typically are? I hate waiting in lines and would especially hate it if I missed the cutoff. I noticed that there are only going to be 300 exclusive sets, which is less than the usual 500 for other (American) stores; is Lego trying to shaft Canadians again?

Thanks for the review, Whitefang! This is one PotC set that I am really looking forward to; the minifigs (and their accessories) are great! However, I must say that I am quite disappointed by the non-chrome gold bars. Seeing chrome gold bars on the front and receiving pearl gold inside reeks of false advertising; I wonder if this is a first run issue, as I didn't think Lego would intentionally put the wrong coloured bars on the front. (This reminds me of 7325 Cursed Cobra Statue's Helena Tova/Skvalling, who on the box had yellow hands but actually had brown hands [which is nowhere as bad]. Anybody else recall any other mistakes Lego has made on their boxes?)

I couldn't think of anything very clever so I built an entry depicting the moment when Boba Fett discovered that his prized, specially-built, Kaminoan-white suit of armor was missing!
-
I don't have many 'regular' pieces (1x4, 1x2, etc), so I decided to build a miniature version of 4856 Doc Ock's Hideout, using only the pieces from that set. I think it turned out okay.

These look really great; I will definitely pick up one or two of the Mario/Luigi bikes. I'm not a big fan of the Mario kart series - I'm more a sim-racer myself - but the bikes really capture the in-game look and feel. The only downside is that this means Lego won't be able to secure a Nintendo license (of course, the odds of this happening were already poor). I'm pretty sure that everyone here prefers Lego to all other building brands. The allure of these sets comes from the license and the simple but fairly good design of the bikes (the carts are a different story).

Even though this set came out before I entered my dark ages, I have no recollection of it, so thanks for the review, LuxorV. This set, in my mind, is what a good entry-level set should be like. Cheap price, three different minifigs, nice assortment of accessories and good design (minus the grate piece used for the hull). Even the alternate builds for this set are especially good (I miss these too). I may go pick one up off Bricklink!

Exclusive Train 10219 Maersk Train (Exclusive 2011)
autobrick replied to paul_delahaye's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Dear LEGO Company, Thanks for charging Canadians $40 extra (33% more) for the 10219 Maersk Train despite the fact the Canadian Dollar has been at/near parity with the US Dollar for over a year. We really appreciate it when we get the opportunity to pay more for the exact same product for no good reason. Sincerely, AFOLs of Canada- 379 replies

My impressions of the 2011 Harry Potter line: Battle for Hogwarts I don't like the look of the towers; they do not convey the image of Hogwarts at all. I wish they included Lupin's werewolf head for the sake of completion. I am perplexed that they also gave us (yet) another Lucius Malfoy, when there are many other death eaters that could have been included. Forbiudden Forest This is extraordinary value. I find the inclusion of Hagrid to be a flaw; we already got two Hagrids within this theme and we really don't need much more (how many half-giants does one need?). In the end, this set will sell well. Knight Bus Somehow this set fails to excite me; for me, there is something very strange about the design, which I mostly attribute to the large glass-less windows and nonuniform wheel wells. Also, seeing 'Dre Head' on its own in the character panel on the front of the box seems silly. It would have been nice for TLG to take this opportunity to give us a new Grim. Whether or not I buy it depends on whether or not I find it on sale! Diagon Alley I think I already mentioned this when it was first announced, but I think it looks phenomenal and I will definitely buy it when Lego has a free shipping promotion again! Hopefully the good sales number of this wave will encourage Lego to produce some 2012 Harry Potter sets as well!

Very nice DeLorean, Henning Birkeland, it looks great! I, too, am a big DeLorean fan and one day hope to one of my own as well. The only thing that bothers me about your MOC are the headlights, which look a bit too wide, but that is a fault of the bricks, not yours. That is actually a misconception: He hadn't sold/bought/traded any drugs when he was charged with drug trafficking and he was acquitted when he was able to prove that he was entrapped by the FBI.

Now that I've seen the other sets in this theme, I am definitely starting to warm up to them. Cars that look especially good are Guido, Sarge and that Italian F1 car. I still think Lightning McQueen looks poor; am I the only one?
