Custom LDD bricks and fixes
suenkachun replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Since the release of the latest LDD Update, the comprehensive PDF Guide regarding LDD Decoration Sizes must be updated again around two weeks later. The most important change to the Guide is due to the UV Mapping of Part 6636 Flat Tile 1×6 being updated, so this Brick now requires its own entry after the two tables. Since the page arrangements became slightly harder to manage after adding this, the tables were further adjusted and improved, then most of the existing entries were simplified into single paragraphs instead of multiple steps, selected ones rearranged and all sub-headings now start with “How To” instead of “Steps To”. Part 3567 Tile, 2×2, Inv., Round and Part 3395 Flat Tile 2×4, Inv. are newly mentioned within existing entries since they use the same UV Mappings, while Part 4515 Ramp 6×8 is now an independent entry, two more new entries being Part 4569 Roof Tile 1×6×1, No. 1 and Part 6178 Plate 6×12 W. 22 Knobs supplied with a Vector UV Mapping. The latest version of the PDF Guide can be downloaded here (same link as before), hopefully it will continue to be useful for all and thanks for stopping by again. -

Just noticed that this issue linked below seems to not have been fixed, at least the latest “240120.lxf” file can now be opened completely error-free. Thanks. -

Brickwise the update seems fine so far, but the latest “240120.lxf” file is missing the following three highlighted Decorations after I installed the “20240120.rar” file, it says one Brick removed so probably related to this. P.S., earlier I submitted the full set of Warning Tile Decorations here, just noticed that the 1×6 version was included in this update, so decided to quickly regenerate the Decoration from my base files using the updated UV Mapping of this Flat Tile. The following full version at 1024px times 1024px should be the most accurate so this can replace the version supplied in the latest update if necessary, the original squashed 1×4 Warning Tile Decoration used full Black (RGB: 0/0/0) instead of LDD Black (RGB: 2742/52) which is why all of my new variants use full Black too unlike the version supplied with the latest update (I can still change mine if this one does use LDD Black). Hoping to see the rest added at some point too, also please replace the existing 24075 and 58858 with the new versions included in that post. Thanks. -

Thanks for the second LDD Update in 2024! Just installed the “Complete LDD update package” or “LDD New Parts.rar” from Dropbox and it seems like this update was not incorporated into those complete files, unless new updates will be separate from the complete files from now on. This explains why I was unable to locate some of the new content, will report back for any issues after I install the “20240120.rar” file, sorry for the confusion in my first draft of this post. Anyways, during this period I manually updated the two current Colour Name Files and the German version has been further improved. Other than “Material155 Tr. Grün mit Glitzernd” changed to “Material155 Tr. Grün Mit Glitzernd”, there are currently 35 LDD Colours containing “-ish” (Reddish, Yellowish or Bluish) in their name but only five Colour Names with “Rötlich” (Reddish) in the German version. The rest do not use “-lich” (“-ish”) at all, so updated the German names of the remaining 30 Colours to make sure “-lich” (“-ish”) is always included (Rötlich=Reddish, Gelblich=Yellowish, Blaulich=Bluish). Hopefully, these fixes can be incorporated into the next LDD Update too. -

Stepping into 2024, I have had a few moments to revisit the comprehensive PDF Guide regarding LDD Decoration Sizes I wrote a while back. Last updated in late November 2023, that version of the Guide added new Bricks, updated UV Mappings and most importantly supplied selected entries with UV Mappings created as Vector Images (SVG) for exact Pixel measurements and better curves. Update contents this time include adding information regarding the UV Mapping of “Part 6179 Plate 4×4 W. 4 Knobs” which I finally figured out recently, rebuilding the two main tables to improve the overall layout and minor text fixes here and there. In addition, as mentioned near the end of the Guide, “Someone on DeviantArt kindly posted seven graphs regarding LEGO Slope (and Plate) Dimensions”, not realising before I could login and download the full versions for free I only relied on the full-size previews which meant one key measurement was completely omitted: the diameter of a LEGO Stud which is 0.48 cm. With this measurement obtained three Brick Entries are now updated with Pixel-perfect measurements since the enlarged Studs are now directly scaled up from the original, their new larger diameter being 307.2 Pixels but rounded up to 308 Pixels for the final PNG Image after output. One last change is updating the Vector UV Mapping of Part 3001 Brick 2×4 so that the four side surfaces have a precise Height of 307.2 Pixels after scaling up and the four vertical gaps modified to accommodate these changes, all adjusted accordingly in the final PNG Image after output. The latest version of the PDF Guide can be downloaded here (same link as before), hopefully it will continue to be useful for all and thanks for stopping by again. -

You can try doing a “Clean Install” of LDD just follow the instructions in my earlier post linked below which is for Windows only. The previous culprit causing LDD to crash upon opening “Group 216” was Part 30350, which has since been fixed in the latest LDD Update on October 30. P.S., I’ve also previously posted about the new perfect method to install LDD fully on Windows 10/11 which is linked below, if necessary do try this out too before doing the “Clean Install” which will definitely help eliminate more potential issues. -

Since a few LDD Updates ago, I have put together a comprehensive PDF Guide regarding LDD Decoration Sizes. The aim was quite simple: to help everyone design the most accurate Decoration PNG images of common regular Bricks for use in LDD, whether they are custom creations or official images to be submitted here for future LDD updates. Simply use the relevant details when designing Decorations for any listed Brick and they will fit onto the relevant Brick surfaces perfectly, with each new LDD Update being released I check all of the newly decoratable Bricks and expand the PDF Guide with more Bricks under existing categories and brand-new entries. After a whole week of studying the latest LDD Update and the various UV Mapping PNG Images in the “UV maps” folder, I have finally completed the new version of the PDF Guide which can be downloaded here (same link as before). Other than six new Bricks, updated UV Mapping information for three Bricks and more accurate output information for five Bricks, the most important new addition is selected entries now supplied with UV Mappings created as Vector Images (SVG) for exact Pixel measurements and better curves. At the end of the Guide, the “Additional Tips” section has also been expanded to include more detailed information regarding how to create Ultra-high-definition Decorations for LDD via “Microsoft PowerPoint” and the free and open-source Vector Graphics editor “Inkscape”. Feel free to test out the different Decoration Sizes in the Guide and report back any errors, as I have for example struggled with the UV Mapping of Part 59349 Wall Element 1×6×5, Abs until finally finding a solution in the past few days (which is why the new version of the Guide was not published soon after the latest LDD Update was released). Thanks for stopping by and I hope this Guide will be useful for all. -

Oops, looks like I completely forgot that during past LDD Updates other than the most recent ones, the GitHub version everyone was asked to download used to be the “Pre-release” version not “Development”. This explains why some older Bricks may be missing on your end, but please remember to check whether you have also included not only the main “XML” file of each Brick but all associated “.g” files too when manually adding back these Bricks to avoid crashes. -

Just checked LDD on my end regarding the issues you posted, both 1126 and 65886 are present on my end and fully usable without any issues, while 30350 was previously causing “Group 216” to crash but has since been fixed. A newer LDD Update was released on October 26 to address a few recent bugs from the major Update on October 23 (linked below), perhaps you missed this post so try downloading this first to see if the issues have been fixed. Specifically, files for 65886 are included in this update while files for 1126 should be present if you install either the “Complete Update” on Dropbox or the “development” Branch on GitHub. -

Thank you for the reply, will test it out later today. My solution is included below (created using only Solid Shapes for improved accuracy), which was the best I could extract from the included “59349_1.png” in the “UV maps” folder supplied with the latest LDD update. It’s not perfect but seems to do the job, the only small issue is tiny sections of Bright Red are showing on the two sides. Feel free to help adjust it if necessary I’m hoping mine will somehow work too, thanks. -

suenkachun replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Since the latest LDD Updates the UV Mapping for Part 59349 Wall Element 1×6×5, Abs was modified, instead of only the front vertical surface being decoratable the same UV Mapping now also decorates the two vertical sides and the inner vertical surface altogether. I’ve spent the past few hours trying to figure out how this new UV Mapping works using the included “59349_1.png” in the “UV maps” folder supplied with the update, but after measuring the various pixel values of the PNG Image in “Microsoft Paint” I still failed to align the four shapes accurately for them to be displayed properly. The most often result is the two sides and the front vertical surface overlapping slightly instead of being divided into three exact sections. Hopefully, someone can help provide all the exact measurements in Pixels within the UV Mapping. Given that it is within a maximum Square of 1024 Pixels times 1024 Pixels, what needs to be known is the exact dimensions of the four shapes in pixels and the height or width of the gaps in pixels to obtain the exact location of the four shapes within the Square. This is the only updated UV Mapping I have failed to decipher fully so thank you in advance to anyone who can help with this. EDIT: Never mind think I got it sorted out. -

Took me less time than expected, but I have successfully completed the full set of printed LEGO Warning Tile Decorations for LDD, all measured carefully from actual photographs of the Printed Bricks, drawn precisely in Vector Graphics editor “Inkscape” and outputted as PNG images with the maximum dimensions for LDD (512px times 1024px for 1×2, 256px times 1024px for 1×4, 1024px times 1024px for both 1×3 and 1×6), Yellow referring to the colour of the Base Flat Tile which is not included within the Decorations due to the Transparent backgrounds. Please be sure to use the image files in their largest sizes for everything to work properly which are linked in each description as the image previews use the smallest size on Bricksafe, I have not included Decoration Numbers as they are harder to locate so these need to be assigned later. P.S., the two older versions I previously contributed need to be replaced with those within this latest batch. The one for 63864 is included below. 1×2 Warning Tile (Large Yellow Corners) 1×2 Warning Tile (Small Yellow Corners) 1×3 Warning Tile (Yellow Corners) 1×4 Warning Tile (Black Corners) 1×4 Warning Tile (Red Corners) 1×4 Warning Tile (Yellow Corners) 1×6 Warning Tile (Black Corners) -

I previously helped upgrade the old 1×4 Warning Tile Decoration and created the 1×2 version too, but due to inaccurate measurements, I was planning to redo them and submit them again anyway. Once I successfully redraw all the base shapes I will simply make the 1×3 version too as the Black stripes seem to be exactly the same across this series of Tiles, I can also hopefully create the 1×6 version from these shapes. -

Was looking through the various Window and Wall Element Parts in LDD and noticed that TLG tends to create separate variants for Transparent Elements nowadays, this also recently applies to Brick 2×4 and Plate 1×1, Round. Hopefully, the other Transparent variants of the following three Brick groups can be included at some point or even the next LDD update to avoid confusion when designing custom builds, if the current selection is already sufficient please help specify which Parts to use for the latest Transparent variant of each group. Thanks in advance. 1. “Wall Element 1×2×2”: Currently in LDD there are two Parts for solid colours 4864/87552, missing the two Transparent variants Part 6268 (original) and Part 35378 (latest). 2. “Wall Element 1×2×3”: Currently in LDD there are two Parts for solid colours 2362/87544 and Part 74968 for Transparent colours, missing the two other Transparent variants Part 30009 (original) and Part 35340 (latest). P.S., hoping to see Part 3233 (new version of Part 4036) added too. 3. “Wall Element 1×4×3”: Currently in LDD there is Part 4215 for solid colours and two Parts for Transparent colours 30007/87543, missing the latest Transparent variant Part 35323. EDIT: Flat Tile 1×4 needs to have its Transparent variant Part 35371 added too just like Part 35386 for Flat Tile 1×2, I use large amounts of both in my custom builds (Transparent Blue sections of solar panels up to hundreds in each file) so it will be best to have both variants together. Also, the latest Transparent variant of Brick 1×2×5 Part 35274 should be added too. -

If you perform a clean install just like I mentioned earlier, the only part in the last category should be Part 26820 Bogey Contact Switch, as the files you mentioned are just leftovers remaining from older updates which have since been removed in newer updates. Start by locating the original “db.lif” file or use an original copy of the extracted “db” folder, then follow the steps in that post. -

Did some research and decided to study the xml files of Bricks in “Group 216” to try and solve its crash issue locally. Focusing only on the latest “Complete Update” download from Dropbox, I used the programme “grepWin” to isolate all xml files containing the text “maingroupid="216"” within the Dropbox Download and located 40 xml files. After installing the original “db” folder and the latest “Complete Update” download from Dropbox together, I opened LDD and searched for the 40 Bricks one by one, LDD crashed after trying to open Part 30350, once “30350.xml” was deleted the crash was gone. Thus, the culprit responsible for LDD crashing upon opening “Group 216” is Part 30350. EDIT: This Brick is now fixed but it is still recommended to do a clean install of the Bricks Database to make sure nothing goes wrong, which will specifically help remove newly added files present in older updates but have since been removed in newer ones. 1. Install the latest “Complete Update” download from Dropbox as usual. 2. Locate an original copy of the LDD “db.lif” file (must be from the original “setupldd-pc-4_3_11.exe” programme) and extract it via LIF Extractor, or use an original copy of the extracted “db” folder. 3. Go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\db and delete the entire “Primitives” folder. 4. Copy and Paste the entire “Primitives” folder from the original extracted “db” folder back onto the same location. 5. Copy and Paste the entire “Primitives” folder from the latest “Complete Update” download from Dropbox in here too, always selecting “Replace All” when prompted. -

Noticed one more “error Brick”: 65514, also the crash in Group 216 is still present perhaps we can help pinpoint the Brick(s) responsible from the files on our end? Checked Part 6179 and both Decoration PNGs (842013 and 80815) are present together with the two corresponding entries in the “DecorationMapping.xml”, the “6179.g” file is there too but nothing happens when the Decoration Tool is used on the surface of the Brick. The three Bricks mentioned earlier are still removed but seems more like a glitch on my end. EDIT: When using the Decoration tool on Part 14719 the same dark shade only appearing when using the Colo(u)r picker tool will be shown on its top surface (the only Brick exhibiting this behaviour at the moment), also when using the Paint tool the top surface can be coloured individually, I do not recall this Brick being multi-colourable so this might need to be corrected unless this is the only way to make the Brick decoratable. -

Thanks for the fix version, tried opening the “231023.lxf” again and on my end, it said 1 Brick could not be loaded and 2 Bricks were not placed correctly thus three Bricks were removed. Did a quick check and found the missing entries shown below. 1. The Part 98138 on the right of the Black Star above the Bright Orange Part 85984 was removed. 2. Both Part 69729 underneath the three Part 85984 were removed. 3. The decoration for Part 6179 seems to be missing. Previous issues with this file on my end have all been fixed otherwise, thanks. -

Just did a fresh LDD install by using files from the original “setupldd-pc-4_3_11.exe” programme, including re-extracting all required files using the LIF Extractor. Then I installed the latest update using the Dropbox version and here are the latest findings. A few previous glitches on my end have all been fixed, including that weird Plate 6x6 issue which must have been due to outdated files when updating. However, the Train Window not attaching issue (Parts 4035/4036) is still around. For the latest “231023.lxf”, nothing has changed since the last time I posted a screenshot. All the missing Bricks there are still only showing their outline box, 12 Bricks removed due to could not be loaded and 2 removed due to being misplaced. Other than these, the Decoration PNG for Part 14719 Flat Tile Corner 1x2x2 seems to missing within the visible Bricks too. Thanks for the efforts so far. -

There are some missing files on both Dropbox and GitHub (I used the development version). I tried installing either version, copying and replacing the “Palettes”, “Assemblies”, “Decorations”, “MainGroupDividers” and “Primitives” folders from both platforms (the rest I manually replaced individually due to one custom colour and custom decorations of my own). Afterwards, as shown below opening the latest “231023.lxf” resulted in 12 Bricks removed and a large number of Bricks not showing with only their bounding boxes present. P.S., the Train Window not attaching issue (Parts 4035/4036) seems to still exist, please check this too and thanks for the update. -

Just checked my current projects in LDD and added a few new Bricks to the list of all existing Bricks with a possible distorted Decoration surface (UV Mapping exceeding texture bounds), use this information when applying the fixes. Being simply a tiny visual issue these can always be modified later. To confirm the issues simply apply a full-size photo Decoration to each Brick’s main Decoration Surface and check the four edges of each Decoration displayed in LDD for any distortion. Already confirmed and clearly visible: Part 2431 Flat Tile 1×4, Part 3068 Flat Tile 2×2, Part 87079 Flat Tile 2×4, Part 4150 Flat Tile 2×2, Round (compare with similar Part 14769). Not yet confirmed but still visible: Part 15210 and Part 15210 Four-sided Sign With Snap, apply Decoration 93337 onto both and neither will be displayed 100% correctly. Potential new candidate: Part 3039 Roof Tile 2×2/45°, not sure what is going on here but when applying a Decoration which fills up the entire slope surface; sometimes the Decoration will get cut off on the left and right sides of the slope, sometimes the Decoration will not fill up the slope on the top and bottom sides, so it’s best to check this Brick’s UV Mapping too. Thanks. -

For some strange reason, I just discovered that Part 4036 Train Window Glass will no longer attach to Part 4035 Train Window, below is the screenshot showing this behaviour. I have not modified anything in my LDD system files so the cause of this is quite a mystery. On a current project which used this connection before, the Glass are all still in their correct locations but just “scaffolded” into place and are no longer properly attached to the Window Frames. Hopefully, this can be a speedy fix for the upcoming LDD update, thanks. -

This is fine, I still recommend installing an update once released for access to the latest contents, in your earlier reply you mentioned using the rar from 24/08/2022 which is now outdated, the latest one is from 29/12/2022 as mentioned before. -

There are two more things I can immediately think of. First, there is a newer update released on 29/12/2022 here, perhaps the missing colours you mentioned were added after the update file from August in a more recent update release, so always use the files from the latest update and check back regularly for new releases. Second, if you installed “LDD Version 4.3.12” instead of “LDD Version 4.3.11” there will be issues with the LDD files themselves, refer to my earlier post on how to install LDD perfectly on Windows using both installers. -

Let me dig out some location paths below and please also check whether you have placed all files in their correct locations. There are three files to extract from the C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer: “db” and two flies under the “Palettes” folder “LDD.lif” and “LDDExtended.lif”. To successfully add all four Colour files these must be extracted first. For details on extraction please refer to the first post of the partner topic [KEY TOPIC] LDD New Parts. Once extraction is complete, check for the following files and folders related to colours. Under the “db” folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\db): “MaterialNames” folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\db\MaterialNames): This folder contains English and German names for the included colour, the two “localizedStrings.loc” files are best accessed using “Notepad++”. “CurrentMaterials” file (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\db\CurrentMaterials.xml): This file lists all current colours that are in LDD. “Materials” file (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\db\Materials.xml): This file contains all colour RGB values. Under the “Palettes” folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\Palettes): Locate the “MaterialSelector.xml” file under the “LDDExtended” folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\Palettes\LDDExtended\MaterialSelector.xml), this file enables all colours in LDD Extended Mode. Finally, paste the “2020NewPreColoredParts” folder under the “Palettes” folder (C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LEGO Company\LEGO Digital Designer\Palettes), giving you access to all new pre-coloured multi-coloured and printed new parts. I guess you may have missed extracting some of the required files, thus the missing colours. Therefore, please complete the extraction process of the three files before pasting and replacing all new files in their exact locations. Please also check other details of the first post of the partner topic [KEY TOPIC] LDD New Parts for the exact location of other relevant folders and files I have not mentioned above, in case some of those were not pasted correctly too.
