Heroica RPG - Quest #28: The Breakthrough

I lead the party to Gurnam's. -
Yeah, I've spent an hour or so looking at Wikipedia, and I've come to the conclusion that this class name and Special name are the most awesome-sounding, reasonably appropriate names. I can add Loyalty back in, but I nerfed the offensive power to make it less like Infiltrator, and that was a positive, so I had to nerf one of the negative aspects, too, to keep the class balanced. I couldn't remove the other half, since if you have to obey the Party Leader but you are the Party Leader, then the trait truly becomes pointless. I actually do want to allow the use of swords, just to make it easier for players to switch over to the class. I made the blank sheet from one of the existing class sheets. (Knight, I think it was) Blending options and Gaussian Blurs are my friend. I just did it for his quick pitch; Sandy probably has a better copy that doesn't have some of the detail removed as a result of all the blurring.
-
'Skirmisher' sounds better than 'Spearman' as a class name. 'Pikeman' and 'Hoplite' are too specific.

He probably double-posted, but JackJonespaw's post got in between them so they couldn't merge. -
Yeah, all that's really needed here is a name change for the special. Anybody have any suggestions? My only concern is that daggers are, for lack of a better word, 'roguish' weapons. Even though they're also used by Mages in Heroica, they seem like weapons to be used by Rogues. Swords seem more traditional and more honorable, and more appropriate for this class.
-
Yes, but Heroica doesn't distinguish between long and short swords, and I don't think it should. It's meant to be a simple RPG.
-
The Encouraged effect is automatic now, it doesn't even require the Shield. I think I will try to buff it somehow, though.
-
Yeah, like I said, I think it might be underpowered, but I can't think of a way to make any more powerful without making it seem like Sentinel. Hmm, yeah, the name is left over from when the class was named 'Spearman'. I'll have to rename that. Also, historically, soldiers similar to this class would carry a dagger or a short sword, so I'm debating whether or not to allow Skirmishers to use swords and whether or not to somehow cripple them if they choose to do so. That's too much like a defensive version of one of Infiltrator's abilities, though, I think.

QM Note:He will still take the Free Hit, and you do have to put him into the Order of Actions. -
Okay, take two: Changes: Name change, from 'Spearman' to 'Skirmisher'. (thanks, Pie!) Skirmishers no longer are forced to agree with and obey their Party Leader. There is now no way for the Skirmisher to buff his own offensive power, but his buffing of other heroes' offensive power is no longer dependent on a die roll. The Cooperative Battle Style does affect other Skirmishers, so if there are two Skirmishers, they can buff each other's offensive power, but the focus of the trait is buffing other heroes. Phalanx is purely defensive; it's a half-power Sentinel now. I'm not sure if that's underpowered. Cautious Hit is now Defend, which allows the Skirmisher to 'share' his SP with everyone else. (thanks, WBD!)
-
Ooh, that provides the perfect substitute for Cautious Hit. Thanks, I'll get to work on that.
-
I think the Knight already fills that role, which is why I was going for a more all-around type of class.

QM Note:Fixed. -
Yeah, I know what you mean.Maybe I'll remove the tripled Damage entirely, so that this becomes purely a support class. Your class draws on presence of allies to increase its own Damage, so my class would then become the direct opposite, buffing its allies.
-
I see what you mean. Maybe I'll nerf the Battle Style and buff the Shield, so that this class becomes a little more focused on buffing its allies instead of drawing on them to buff itself. Well, in a, ah, normal quest that didn't have a gazillion Humanoid enemies, Skrall would be a lot less powerful. I could bring it down to only "Cannot be Party Leader".
-
I must have missed that class. Do you have a link? The limited weaponry is to balance the sheer offensive power of the class. It can very easily be dealing triple Damage with every hit. Spears can also be used by Barbarians and their advanced classes, so maybe a class like this would encourage QMs to introduce more spears. That, too, was to balance out the offensive power of the class. This class also has a positive effect in its Battle Style; all six of the Basic Classes do not. I could tone it down to just one of the two effects of the Job Trait, though. 'Peltast' seems too specialized, but I like 'Skirmisher'.
-
Here's what I've got so far for a Lion Knight Expert Class. It's a very versatile class, with a Shield that's provides both offensive and defensive buffs to the rest of the party. It potentially has some serious offensive power, but it's going to be a support class and it can't take on a leading role. The class is also quite limited in its choices of weapons. Stats are not finalized, of course, but I wanted to see how much interest there would be in playing such a class. (class name is a WIP) Looking at this now, I think it might be better if Miss was just a plain Miss.

Thanks for the pic. It looks too skeletal to me. The portions on the left side look unfinished. The landing pad looks like a stack of plates and tiles. I think they did a pretty good job on the right side, though. Nice to see that they got Palpy's gold 'saber right, too. -
That depends on what the technology is. Usually, the technology goes back in time with you, though.

Not really. I started there, so it's what I'm used to doing. I had eight heroes on Q4 because it allowed the possibility of two balanced teams if the party decided to split up. I can't really say that Q31 has been even easier to run with four heroes, either.

Except for Skrall, you each pick up a Standard-Issue Crossbow from a nearby crate. Arthur, you decide to leave your staff and gems and jump off of the top of the wall, which instantly Knocks you Out, but, since you're not yet in a battle, you have time to regain consciousness at 1 Health. Luke, seeing this, you expend 1 Ether to revive Arthur to full Health. However, Arthur, you are now outside the walls, unable to rejoin the party members atop the walls, and you have left your staff and gems with them. Skrall, you pick up Arthur's staff and gems and hold on to them for him. Skrall and Luke, you take up positions on top of the wall. The rest of you charge out across the battlefield, trying to fight your way to the crossbowmen. "They've seen your attack! Prepare for battle!" As far as getting back, if you wanted to, you could go back to before the alternate reality was created and prevent yourself from creating the alternate reality. (which could be considered creating another alternate reality which is identical to the original reality) You gotta think fourth-dimensionally, Marty.
