Efferman, I really like how you designed the steering on this! One of my long term projects is an AC700, and I've been trying to figure out how to do a crab/steer setup as well. I've got some sketches for the steering mechanisms, but I'm not sure it would work as well as yours. I'll have to do some experimenting, and may end up borrowing your idea. Nicely done!

6X6 mobile crane
dhc6twinotter replied to lcs's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great start! As far as connecting your drive line to the third axle, is there any room to add another bevel gear on the opposite side of your center differential? Looking at the pictures, it looks like it may fit between the steering rack and the diff. The driveshaft could run under the steering rack and to the other axle. In other words, you would have two bevel gears on your center axle, with one going to the front axle, and the other to the rear axle. Anyways, not sure if you have room for that, but just a thought... -
I had a great time out there! If I'm still out on the east coast next year, I will definitely be there.

Chain Drive
dhc6twinotter replied to Silcantar's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ah, ok....I was wondering if that was what you meant. I think a chain would work, and if not, you could always just throw in a few extra idler gears. I like the idea. -
I never did understand why Lego uses those clutch gears and driving ring in the center of the turntable for this set and the crane truck. An old style differential carrier with a shaft straight through would work just as well, and it would not have any slop. Anyways, I'm really excited about the set. The local TRU doesn't have it yet, but I'm hoping they will have it soon. They have the container truck thing already, but I'm not really too interested in that. Daniel

Chain Drive
dhc6twinotter replied to Silcantar's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sounds like a cool idea. I bet that suspension would have some great flex! I've never built anything motorized using chains, so I can't really comment on the strength. However, looking at how the steering is done on that model, it looks like the chains would have to twist as each front wheel steered. That's probably not really a good thing. If you want chains, I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I think it would be simpler to just run a drive shaft through the center of your steering pivot point. IMHO, 1 XL motor would work fine for the scale you are building at. However, you could use one motor per side to allow for a 360* turn. Anyways, that's my $.02. It looks like a really fun project, and I look forward to seeing your results. Daniel -
Sorry, I'm a bit confused here. I was under the impression that AFOLs could not make submissions for the Lego Technic Challenge. Is the AFOL competition separate from the competition posted on LEGO's website, and is there a monthly competition for AFOL? Where would I find info on the AFOL competition? Or am I just completely wrong about everything?

D2C Designers requesting feedback for 2012 models

1. No 2. Individual. 3. A colosseum or sports arena. 4. A large castle set based loosely on a real castle without all the mythical creatures and whatnot. As a Technic fan, I would also suggest a large technic set, but I think TLG has that covered with 8043. Keep up the good work! 5. -I would like to see more large aviation themed technic sets. Maybe a UH-60 Coast Guard helicopter, or some other sort of aircraft. If TLG does design a technic airplane, please include more than just movable ailerons! A proper technic airplane should have ailerons, elevators, rudder(s), and possibly retractable landing gear. -We need more pneumatic sets, and the ability to purchase individual pneumatic components (like power functions). -I really like the modular town sets! I would suggest a police station or hospital for the next theme. -I would like to see the return of the Robin Hood sets. Perhaps with the new Robin Hood movie(s), this could become a new licensed theme? -Include more technic pieces in pick-a-brick, especially the large technic panels. I really like the direction Lego has been going the last couple years. It is one of the reasons I've returned from my dark ages. Keep up the good work! Daniel -

I like this! Very nicely done! The green color is awesome! How do the axles stay centered? Are the links triangulated, or do the shocks keep the axles centered? I think this is the best off-road vehicle I've seen on here. -

I like it! The rear suspension looks like it has a good amount of flex. -
I'm going to really try to make this, but I've got a trip to Oshkosh, WI the previous weekend. Not sure I'll be able to get any time off work, so if I go, I'd be driving up and arriving late on the 6th. I've got a Technic MOC that should be done by then. What happens on Friday the 6th? Is that just time designated for AFOLs to see each others projects? Anyways, this would be my first event, so I really hope I can make it! Daniel
