Truck Trial 56mm competition

Most Challenging Mechanism
mahjqa replied to Tobi Wankenobi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The mechanism to store energy in the springs and to release it at the right time was very fiddly. It had to be coupled to a steering axle that could withstand the weight of the car dropping onto the wheels continuously. Weight distribution was also very delicate. On top of that, it had to look good as well. -
Truck Trial 56mm competition

That -6 is because it's my own truck. As organiser, I'm not eligible to win any prizes. The other positive scores you see in that column are rewards for originality / looks. -
Truck Trial 56mm competition
mahjqa posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Pretty much all it says on the tin- competitors are limited to wheels no larger than 56mm, max width is 17 studs (stickie-outie-bits like mirrors are OK), motors, power supplies etc should be 100& Lego, no 3D printed parts- very conventional. We found out during the trial that the obstacles may have been a bit too hardcore, but we intend to do it again with improved machines and gained knowledge. -
@UltraViolet definitely also take a look at this model: It uses those doors in a great way to cover up the battery box. The only downside I see is that they haven't produced 1x1 plates with clip in the right colour yet.

Glad you all like it! @Dav1d It's certainly interesting how Friends went to space before they got a train. Maybe MOCs like this can show them there is plenty of enthusiasm for it.

It's one of those challenges that the Powered Up system brings; how to build something that looks decent, while still containing all the electric components that make it go? Since subtle colours are not my style, Friends was the way to go. Still, I think Lego's Dark Pink is a plausible colour for an industrial shunter. I hope the video speaks for itself: Free instructions can be found here: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-175076/Mahj/df06-aposematic

Did you build B-models when sets had those?
mahjqa replied to howitzer's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Most times I don't even build the A model. I buy for parts. -

mahjqa replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I can't make sense of the geometry of the A-frame. I would assume all holes on there are on a regular grid. Then how does the 11 stud flip-flop beam fit in? It appears to stretch between two holes that should, by all means, be more than 10 studs apart center-to-center. -

Technic 2023 Set Discussion
mahjqa replied to Dami's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Set # 853 called and wants your lunch money. Getting the Ferd because of the dark blue stuff, triple curved panels are yummy, glad they're still making cars that fit the car transporter. -
