This my newest MOC,

the JCB JS 360 Excavator.

It is 1 to 13 scale model, carefully scaled down using official PDF from JCB website.

That couses some difficulties during the building of the model, like 6 wide tracks (8275s are 5 studs wide), 5 studs wide arm and mechanical cylinder.

But the final result is here...my second biggest and heaviest model to-date.

It has almost 6 kilograms, 12 motors, and maybe 6 thousand pieces.

It has 4 XLs, 4 Ms, 3 IR receivers, 3 Extension Wires and 2 rechargeable boxes

There is very few studs visible on the model, it has lots of 1x2, 1x4 and 1x6 tiles as well as 1x3 curved sloped pieces.

This is my first crawler excavator. I did build one wheeled one before, which worked fine, but it was much smaller, and therefore I could not use the ideas from it.

I have been working on it for a past few months, mainly because of the lack of time.

Lets start with the crawlers:

It houses 2 XLs for driving each track independently (1 to 3 reduction) and 2 Ms (1 to 3 reduction) to rotate the superstructure.

You can see some gears in the pictures in the crawlers, they were impossible to hide.

Roller bearing is applied around the turntable, otherwise it is impossible to operate with the superstructure.

Superstructure:

is 28 studs wide and it contains motors for operating mechanical cylinders, extending wires, and 2 new rechargeable battery boxes.

It has very strong base with 2 layers frame to ensure the pressure from the arm wont break it.

I have included one worker minifig just to make easier to see the size of the arm.

Hard part about it was making it extra strong and curved. Also it has to carry all the motors in itself.

Carefully placing plates and slopes and tiles did the trick, you can see the proces of building the arm in the photo. I am proud how the arm is curved, and it had to be achieved working with bricks in the 45 degrees angle, regarding upper and lower part of the arm. You can see the small gap where those two sections are connected. Frame is what it gives it strength.

Arm is 5 studs wide, and it was nightmare to build.

Arm is fully functional, bucket works great, dipper also, but the two cylinders that move the entire arm are in severe pressure under the load, even they are powered by an XL, each, so operating the arm up and down is a little bit slow and very shaky... almost dangerous for the parts. Once when I tested the arm under load in the bucket, the whole arm ripped itself out of the superstructure, breaking U-Joints, one axle and few pins...destroying good part of the superstructure.

Mechanic cylinders are very strong, but not so efficient due to the worm gear drive, but they are operated by the multimple motors, so it is not a problem.

They are made to be very compact and very stiff, so they wont break apart once under pressure.

Goal was to make a realistic compact cylinders, which will be operated by motors, hidden in the arm. I can control the motor at variable speed, so it is nice to watch it.

Good thing about them is that I can make them at any length, I will use this cylinder for my next MOC, too

Really interesting model!

It is a pitty you wasn't able to produce a video.

Also would like to see the cylinders construction more in detail.

Wow! I really like the roller bearings around the central turntable. Don't ever take this MOC apart!

Sorry to hear about your breakup with your girlfriend --"there are more fish in the pond" (as the saying goes). However, there are FEW TO NO MOCs as magnificent as this one! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Actually I have some phone camera videos of the cylinder, turntable and crawlers operating. But they are very low quality, but it can be seen how it works...I will upload them to the youtube after work!

Stunning, simply stunning. This is without a doubt one of the finest technical MOCs I have ever seen. You are to be commended on the excellent scale representation of the actual excavator. I think this is the first time I have seen a tracked excavator which can compete with Jennifer Clark's JCS JS220 for build quality. Very well done.

If you get sick of it, you should donate it to me. :grin:

I think I an possibly sum this up in a sentence...lets see: Blood freaking shiney inducing amazing! I had to take 3 looks to be sure that thing wasn't a real one shrunk and set next to a lego controller, beautiful job mate!

This is a really nice model. Great looking and real technical model!

Too bad it has non-lego-parts.

(like the actuators...)

But I would love to see some movies.

It does not have any non-LEGO parts...this model is 100% LEGO!

Actuators are built from LEGO pieces...I am uploading the video of them right now!

Amazing MOC, the design is so smooth and realistic and it seems to be very well built. The actuators are especially interesting and quite unique, but all its features are impressive. I can't wait to see a movie of the excavator in action.

First, thank you all for such nice comments!

I really appreciate that.

For the questions:

-about weight, it has 6kg :)

-about the cylinders...they work via gear racks placed on the 1x15 Technic beam (or any length you want) and worm gear. I have been working on it for about 5 days to make it small and thin like this...oh and XL is stalled when pressure is too much, the cylinder wont break!

-about BS gallery...is is not public yet. But my connection was very bad and I have uploaded only few pictures.

Amazing model. Like many of your previous MOCs, the pictures are initially deceptive and you only get a sense of the model's true size after looking at them carefully.

The design of your actuators is especially interesting. It looks like you built them out of gear racks, but they must be quite powerful if they can move such a big and heavy boom.

Awesome model, I have seen (non-Lego) RC models at this scale and I must say this is equally, if not even more impressive.

The fact that it's all Lego makes it even better, I guess you are building at the limit of what is possible with just standard pieces with this.
