In anticipation of the Technic crawler crane which will be released in 2015 by Lego, here is an alternate model for the 42038 set. It's the first MOC I've built using tracks, and I quite enjoyed the process. It has 3 functions (rotating superstructure, tilting boom and hook/string) and a bogey suspension. There are a few more pictures in this blog entry.

Update: Instructions are now available.

I really like this c-model. I looks great and is "clean". I like the amount of detail for a smaller model. Great Job BusterHaus

Lovely C model, I'll definitely build it if you ever make (any kind of) instructions for it :)

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments.

This may be a possibility. I haven't worked with flexible elements (tracks, string, flex axles) in MLCad yet, so it would be a good opportunity to learn something new.

Wow, amazing alternate.How many bricks were left over?

I built a claw attachment and a load to test the crane. There is still a bunch of elements left over, but adding them would have altered the look of the crane, and not in a positive direction. The improvement that is most needed is stiffening up the tracks so the crane feels more rigid. There are enough parts left over to do that, but most of my attempts to do this ruined the look of the crane, so I picked visuals over performance. That being said, it's a very fun model to play with. Both my boys spent more time with it than any other model I've built before.

And the left over parts:

Again, thank you for the instructions. I needed to build something like this today, and I can go to bed feeling better :classic:

I didn't spot any errors. Come to that, I don't remember even making any mistake of my own, I find your instructions very clear and easy to follow, yet not boring.

I made out your great model with parts from 42030 and 42008, infact the colour aren't the best choice.

I like it so much that I've added 2 XL motor for the track and IR receiver, plus a manual stabilizator for the front part,

not really necessary because the weight of the track component is huge;

The only "bad" think is that the weight of the laden with the engine tend to incline the central part of the crane...

Really great C model, thank you VERY very much for the instruction!42038-1.jpeg
