Slegengr Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 (edited) Butcher Birger and his wife Selby use the smokehouse to preserve meat to store for winter. After cutting up the meat on the butcher's table, the meat is hung on hooks from the poles below the rafters. A fire is kindled below and kept burning with low flames in order to provide steady heat and smoke to dry out the meat and preserve it to provide meat throughout winter, when game is scarce. EDIT: Added image with replaced smoke: Edited November 12, 2014 by Slegengr Quote
LordDan Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Really nice smokehouse, it looks great! The interior detail is very nice and the design in general, especially the roof, is awesome Quote
Alfadas Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Wow, I wish I could make such roofs... Everything looks very nice, great work once again!! Quote
vitreolum Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Very nice, both in concept and execution. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Love that roof design! Great work! Quote
IenjoyLego89 Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Nice storehouse, i love the roof :) Quote
Hobbythom Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Interesting structure! Nice solution for the smoke. Job well done! Quote
mccoyed Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Nice job on the roof and on the concept. I think that's probably GoH's first smokehouse! Quote
Slegengr Posted November 4, 2014 Author Posted November 4, 2014 (edited) Really nice smokehouse, it looks great! The interior detail is very nice and the design in general, especially the roof, is awesome Thanks, LordDan! The roof was the first portion I built, and it inspired the 3-door design. The interior was interesting to make as well. Wow, I wish I could make such roofs... Everything looks very nice, great work once again!! Thanks, Alfadas. It is simpler than it looks to make such a roof. I just used SNOT bricks to attach plates in a triangular prism and used round corner plates to vary the height of the tiles. Then I tiled everything visible and used details like the shields to cover areas that did not look as good with tiles. Very nice, both in concept and execution. Thanks, vitreolum! Love that roof design! Great work! Thanks, Lord Vladivus! Nice storehouse, i love the roof :) Thanks, lenjoyLego! Interesting structure! Nice solution for the smoke. Job well done! Thanks, Hobbythom! The smoke was a quick decision when I could not find my store of the usual smoke element: the 4-scoop ice-cream piece. I think the ice-cream piece works well, but I also think the inverted slopes did the trick here as well. Nice job on the roof and on the concept. I think that's probably GoH's first smokehouse! Thanks, mccoyed! The people of Falkidalr will need meat over winter, and this is the best way of the times to preserve it. I am glad that with each new member comes a little bit more embellishment of GoH. Edited November 4, 2014 by Slegengr Quote
Zerobricks Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 One of the best roofs ever! Its like a corner piece of a cube placed on top of a house. Awesome idea! Quote

I am honored that you think it is one of the best, even for its simplicity. It is indeed basically the corner of a cube placed on top of the walls . Quote
mrcp6d Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 That crazy roof somehow works. Blowing my mind man, blowing my mind. Quote

soccerkid6 Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Very unique shape, must have been difficult getting the roof to fit so nicely A smokehouse is a great idea and not something I've seen done before that I can remember Quote
Slegengr Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Very unique shape, must have been difficult getting the roof to fit so nicely A smokehouse is a great idea and not something I've seen done before that I can remember Thanks, SK! I did play with the shape a bit to make it fit, but it was actually much simpler than I thought when I went to fit them together. The roof is only resting on the walls, not physically attached, though, much to my surprise and entirely without intention, the stud slots on the angled edge of one of the corner plates on the underside of the roof interlock over the studs on the plates atop the wall. This helps prevent the roof from shifting (along with the peaks over the doors). I thought a smokehouse was fitting for Mitgardia, and I wanted something more than a simple storehouse with "storage" inside. Quote
Jakorin Swiftsword Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Wow, excellent techniques on this! I really admire all the angles. Well done! Quote

Garmadon Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Great idea and build, Slegengr, excellent roof design I like the meat hangers and foliage as well, nice take on the store phase I For improvement I would suggest trying to make the door all one color (probably brown, the tan is a bit bothersome as it is), but you would probably need to change the knob design to do that. I'm not really a fan of the slope-smoke either, as it seems a little blocky. Very nice build on the whole though Quote

I'm not really a fan of the slope-smoke either, as it seems a little blocky. Very nice build on the whole though Thanks, Garmadon! I agree that the doors should have been better colored. I could not find some parts when I made the doors, namely: reddish-brown 1x4 tiles, 1x2 tiles, and 1x1 tiles. I really wanted reddish-brown for the doors to differentiate them from the roof. I found them since this build and may make an update to the smokehouse. I also hope to find my 30+ ice-cream pieces to use for the smoke, as was my original intent. They are currently buried in a stack of boxes sorted with components to be used in future steam-punk builds. The slopes were a quick stand-in for now. I appreciate the constructive criticism! Quote
Jorrith Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 That's a lovely smokehouse! Had to look twice at the pictures for all the details, very nicely done indeed! Also love the triangular shape of it. Quote
de Gothia Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 What a great idea! That roof is as said before so epic! Well done! My only nitpick would be the smoke. It looks unrealistic and the smoke come out in four directions, no wind I assume? Other than that this is pure eye candy! Quote

Also love the triangular shape of it. Thanks, Jorrith! I am glad you like it. I enjoyed making the triangular shape, except when I went to attach it to the baseplate. (I used illegal connections that show stress in the door frames) What a great idea! That roof is as said before so epic! Well done! My only nitpick would be the smoke. It looks unrealistic and the smoke come out in four directions, no wind I assume? Other than that this is pure eye candy! Thanks, de Gothia! The smoke was a quick throw-together when I could not find my ice-cream pieces usually used for smoke. I did make all smoke columns bend in the same direction, but I also made each spread, and the angles look more swirling than bent in the direction of the light wind. I think if I were to try to make this same smoke technique better, I would connect the columns of smoke together at the top to make the wind direction more evident, though I personally was not pleased with this smoke. I plan to update it when I find my ice-cream pieces and retake pictures of the smokehouse. Thanks for the critique! Quote
Hammerhand Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Really nice idea, and great execution of it! The meat hanging inside is perfect! Quote

Thanks, Hammerhand! --- I have updated my post to include an image with smoke composed of ice-cream pieces. I like it much better than the slope smoke. Quote
