  1. Nice review! This set really blew me away the first time I saw it. It was on the cover of the 1989 product catalog, and at first glance I thought it was a Master Builders model or something, then it sank in... A new Pirate Theme! The wait for summer was unbearable (Batman was coming, too) but worth it! I remember staying up all night after work to build it. The selection of new parts in this one set is amazing- I counted at least twenty! I don't think that happens a lot anymore, but I don't collect every theme nowadays. The game included with your set is new to me as well- I agree with others how we are still learning about older sets.

    Happy 25th Anniversary, BSB!

  2. Hmm, burning or drowning! Seriously, though- when I worked at TRU (this was over ten years ago) we had a sale on the Dragon series of Mega Bloks, and the store director asked me to build a big display using each of the available sets. While I was working on this project I was really disappointed in the overall quality of the toy. Pieces did not hold together well at all, and the whole building process felt very unstable. That was the only time I've ever used Mega Bloks, and I doubt I'll ever use them again.

As for Kre-O, I have not had a chance to try them out. However, I have been a little interested in their Star Trek line. I've seen TRU have some decent sales on the bigger sets, and I've been tempted to pick some up.

If LEGO were to suddenly end, I would not switch to another brand. I have plenty of the good stuff to keep me going for years!

  3. This set looks really good! The front of the bike shop has a great official CITY look to it, like the various 8x16 buildings they have done. I can see that I already have a lot of the parts (probably a few in different colors) to build this. Since I already have a bike shop in the Town Square set, I will probably MOD it into a jewelry or clothing store. Looking forward to seeing more pics!

  4. Nice Mini-Rig! I have an almost complete set- I'm missing two Power of the Force ones. I like your Mk 2 the best. It is closer to the Kenner version, I think. Are the laser cannons attached to each other? That was a feature on the original, but I was always afraid one might snap off while moving them. It looks like you have wheels underneath- I'd like to see what you did there. The SNOT work is interesting, as I have very little experience building that way. Have you thought about using grey or something other than white for the treads? Although yours is perfectly camouflaged in the snow! Good job, I hope you consider some of the other Mini-Rigs in the future.

  5. I liked how the last batch of Episode I sets were spread out over a few waves and also were from different parts of the movie- not just focused on one single battle. That being said, I would have really liked an updated AAT. And I would have gone nuts for a Gungan battlepack. Now it's probably too late as most of TMP sets are retired.

I have to agree with everyone else- An updated Jango Slave-1 is sorely missing from the ATOC wave. Personally I think there should have been at least one or two ATOC sets in the winter wave not related to the Geonosis battle. This would have given us possible figures like Taun We, Zam Wessel, or Dexter.

I really hope that we see an updated Imperial Shuttle. It's surprising to me how little attention this incredibly iconic ship has gotten in System scale. Two versions, with one not even being a new design. It would be a great opportunity for some cool figures, like Jerjerrod!

  6. Got a Simpson's House today at LEGO on Michigan Ave. The box was slightly squished on one side, so they offered an extra 500 VIP points. I saw that as getting me $25 closer to picking up the SSD. I'm glad they've found an alternative to discounting exclusive sets- it was a great incentive!

  7. Very nice, very playable city you have there! Your MOD'ed Police & Fire Station looks really good as one giant rescue complex, I could see LEGO doing something like that down the road. I really like your bus shelter! It's a shame we didn't get one in last year's Town Square- just a sign. I think your road plates look pretty good. I would probably use a straight or "T" instead of a cross where your Cement Mixer is, but that makes a nice parking space as well. And those plates are crazy expensive, too. Looking forward to seeing it evolve!

  8. Meyerc13 and lightningtiger I completely agree with you- This Arctic subtheme might have been better off as an action theme. My layout has grown to accommodate Farm, Forest, and Space, but even if I had the extra room, Arctic? Um, there's a beach with palm trees right over there- and look! A park with grass and flowers. It just doesn't fit. Don't get me wrong- the sets look great! It's just not really CITY. What this means for me is saving a bit of cash this summer, or use it on the trains.

  9. I've remained almost 100% spoiler free, save for any official trailers and the endless TV spots, so I'm extremely excited to see this. It's great to see all the positive reviews coming in, although I'll hold off reading any till Saturday.

Just wondering- I am going to see it on Friday eve with a few friends from work. but not anyone with as great an interest in LEGO as I am. If any EB members are interested in meeting up and attending the show on Friday, send me a PM- I would love to meet some local Chicago members!

  10. I must agree these do not look good at all! K'NEX was a great "I want to build something other than LEGO" toy. When I worked at TRU, I was always enthusiastic about showing the guests all the new sets. Now they seem to have become a Knock-Off brand, which is really too bad. Can't say that I'd be too keen on trying to sell any of these. I kind of had Seth McFarland pegged as a LEGO fan, too. Not that I think LEGO would ever do a Family Guy theme- waaay too mature for their audience.

  11. wyrm12, I'm not sure what you mean about the Winter 2014 wave, as they are all available now, unless you live in the U.S. A few members have already reviewed some of them. There are no Rebels sets out until Summer, closer to when the show starts. If you are speaking of next Winter's wave, you'll need to wait quite a bit- generally rumors start late summer around SDCC.

  12. Nice review. I'm also thinking of getting the microfighters, but for minifigs and parts, since they pack some nice parts I always need for MOCs.

Has anyone ever thought of using the microfighters to build a Star Wars-themed carusell ride for minifigs?

It's funny you would mention that, because when I first saw the Microfighters I thought they all looked like carnival rides!

The Han Solo figure bothers me a bit- I really hope that torso is not used in the Cantina set, since it's his Endor vest and not the one seen in ANH. But I do like his new face print, although I will miss the traditional smirk. Great review, BTW. Thank you!

  13. I had a Classic Space Monorail MOC display set up last year at Brickworld, which used two of the switches. Halfway through the event, both of them froze up! The nice guy next to me suggested graphite powder- worked perfectly and the switches are still fine this day.

  14. I was lucky enough to get all five of the posters on Tuesday, and was told the Sea Cow would be available early for VIP's. All store employees get to see the movie for free, which I thought was a very nice gesture from Warner Bros. I am hoping there will be some midnight screenings on Thursday the sixth.

  15. All Star Trek with emphasis on TNG and DS9, Sopranos, BSG (2003), South Park, Soap, The Carol Burnett Show, Family Guy, Land of the Lost, Simpsons, All in the Family, Colbert Report, The Muppet Show- these are among my favorites. I was too young to understand all the sex-talk on Soap, but I laughed at all of the physical humor. Re-watching them when I got a little older was a blast since it made more sense to me. I really wish they hadn't ended the show with a cliffhanger- I would love to know what happened to all the characters.

  16. I generally go by what they show at the end of the instruction booklets. The 2013 Fire Truck is shown alongside all the other fire sets, so I don't consider it part of the Great Vehicles. Certainly some GV's will fit nicely into other sub-themes, like the Logging Truck- I have that one next to the Forest Police Station. I'm pretty sure that if LEGO had released an Airport theme this year, that Airport Fire Truck would be grouped into that theme instead of GV.

Great Vehicles reminds me of early Classic Town days where a multitude of useful cars and trucks were released every year without being directly connected to each other.

  17. Nice nod to Ralph McQuarrie with the Stormtrooper holding a Lightsaber. I'm not sure if I'll collect any Rebels sets- I generally stick to the films. So naturally I'm very happy to hear about the B-Wing and Snowspeeder. I know it's the millionth redesign, but it would be wise to have one widely available to battle the AT-AT.

  18. Back in 1986 I realized there were no new Star Wars toys being made by Kenner. I was a teenager who grew up on Star Wars toys, and I remember being pretty depressed that it was over. I think that was also the first time I had felt nostalgic about something. If LEGO Star Wars were to end, I imagine I would feel the same way- I already feel nostalgic about the early sets, and I'm sure many of the new sets will become classics in the future. I also have to think about how much longer I can keep collecting. Sooner or later space will be an issue, as I collect many other themes.

  19. I have nine of the older style, and eighteen of the new version. But I have many unopened sets that include them, so I would guess maybe forty of the new ones. I really like the newer orange ones, mostly for the Technic axle and sharp edge- those features are useful for me. The older ones seem more sturdy and easier to hold. The thumb rest really helps. I've never gone out and purchased a bagged separator- all of mine were either included with the set, part of a bulk lot, or handed out with purchase.

Has anyone noticed the LEGO Store placing little "Don't forget your Brick Separator" signs in front of sets that include them? I think I've seen one or two. I'd be a little upset if I shelled out $2.50 for one only to find out I was getting one anyway.

  20. I work at a gay bar and I'm pretty sure you could sell one of these to every customer that comes in. There is a massive fan following here from customers and employees alike. I never watched it during its original run, but caught it in syndication much later, and consider it a true classic. Your set really captures the essence of the show, and the minifigs are spot on.

Seeing this makes me want to try a different sitcom. All in the Family? Soap?
