  1. This is simple, but pretty neat. The thing I don't like about it is the duplicate characters. Some of them work since they're generic enough, such as General Veers, but others not so much. I would use the plain golden microfig from Lego Champion as C-3PO instead of the second Chewbacca, a microfig mummy as Dengar instead of the second Boba Fett, and most importantly, the hologram Darth Sidious as the king instead of the second Vader. Can't think of a good substitute for Leia, so we'll have to pretend that the second Luke is Wedge or something.

Thanks for your excellent suggestions Mister Quidditcher!

I was thinking of using the Hogwarts Hermione Granger Microfig as the imperial queen.

Leia is indeed a problem - The Lego Champion Female Microfigs would work in a Return of the Jedi themed chess set though.

  2. A big, expensive set with a more substantial building element, like the Giant Castle Chess Set, would be less likely to fall foul of that but as others have said I suspect there is already a license for collectors Star Wars Chess sets elsewhere. Whether they too would get upset over a Lego version is a whole other matter, but it's probably a big blocking factor.

Would a SW Chess set with theming and microfigs from the Battle of Hoth gameset have a better chance at being made by TLG?

  3. The thing is that Lego only has the rights for Star Wars construction toys. Anything that does not fall into that category will get shot down by Lego's competitors :sweet:

So if you have to build your chess set that could technically pass the loophole?

  4. Please refrain from making duplicate topics.

Could you please delete that one? I had no option to modify the title or delete the topic (the original topic was more of a question whether anyone had done something like this MOC).

C3PO could work well as a queen

However, this set does look amazing and much more likely an item that could be released within an affordable budget, great design!

Thanks Fuppylodders! I hope TLG releases this as an affordable series with unique configurations for every Star Wars episode.

Nice MOC! If only Lego released a different games set, (Maybe Battle of Endor?) for more microfigs.

Thank you JackJonespaw! For now I've ended up with doubled Lukes and Vaders as the King and Queen for each side. More Star Wars microfigs to choose from would indeed be awesome.

  5. That's waaay uncool. Bumping an old topic just to plug your (rather unspecial and really unlikely) proposal.

Sorry about that - I thought it was great that someone had thought of this idea before and evinced demand for such a set.

And you're entitled to your opinion but the LEGO Star Wars chess set IS very special for my 6 year old son (and his friends) which is all that matters to me:) He wouldn't be playing chess so eagerly otherwise - it's a great hook to get young kids started playing chess.

I have tried to find the best balance of simplicity, affordability, good looks and fun gameplay in the mix of pieces for this set. If you're looking for something totally awesome, let's hope Brandon Griffith turns his Star Wars sets into a LEGO CUUSOO project:

Thanks for your support KimT! I totally understand about the thread consolidation:)

Supported BaronSat's Bantha too. I've also updated my Lego CUUSOO project description to reflect the help of the Eurobricks forum members.

  7. That's true, plus I always assume there is going to be about a 20% price increase for a set (I hadn't really thought this way until the last 3 or 4 years) so that would bump this up from $100 to $120(Licensed) to $140 (inflation )to $150 ($140 is a pretty underused price point for Lego, and there has been an influx of $150 sets lately) This would definitely make it less appealing.

You and rogueang are right about the price. While it would still sell well at $120/$140 it would be a blockbuster at $100.

As an owner of the Vikings chess set, playing chess can be very difficult with figures on a small board, there is often not enough room for them to be places closed together without accesories falling off or the figure falling off completely (resulting in long debates about where the piece is supposed to go). So all in all, having a big board with a lot more free space is definately an advantage.

I took the LEGO Star Wars Chess Set (housed in a old LEGO Vikings chess box and board) on a transatlantic flight last week. It was quite playable as there are only minifigs in the set. The light-sabers kept falling off though. A lot of people on the flight asked if it was available as a official LEGO set.

  8. Knight- han on tauntaun. Similar shape to AT-ST but smaller

Maybe the knights could be one Han and one Luke (but on tauntauns you might not recognise them)

Very nice idea (also suggested by Legoman273 earlier)! This way I can get both Han and Luke into the game while the tauntauns provide enough of a similarity between the two knights (Han will be the knight next to Leia).

Thanks so much for all the helpful comments - keep them coming.

  9. Neat idea, but there's already a couple of incredible SW Chess set MOCs out there: SW Chess sets. If TLG were to ever make those I'd seriously consider purchasing, even though I'm not a chess player.

Yes, they had me drooling too! I'm aiming for a more humble, functional design (tested by my kids!) that will hopefully be priced below $70 if made by TLG.
