Brickshelf is shutting down. Let's try to save it.
Lipko replied to Trekkie99's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I don't know what is the company's policy, but the 1. image is blocked duo to the website being blocked. Misc or unknown category, dunno if it's some general rule, or the fact that it is somehow redirecting. I'm not an IT guy, just a hobby code messer. -

I won't say I understand everything, but would be off anyway. Thanks for the reply -

I cannot setup Drive properly. Sometimes images get blocked, sometimes pdf instructions ask my permission to be shared no matter how I set it, maybe it forgets the setting or automatically switches of sharing after some months, dunno, it is a real PITA for me. For some providers it's nőt so obvious how to deeplink pictures, soe providers make horrible long code filenames, etc. I certainly want to avoid an owned website, so I'll look into it. Maybe this thread could include some tips. Redirects can be rendered in a normal <img> or background-image property? How you redirect a .jpg? EDIT: maybe I'll go with some tool like this one, or better, or make my own tool (so the mapping table doesn't have to be manually filled, it could be in a simple tab/comma delimeter text): https://www.joydeepdeb.com/tools/find-replace.html Basically I will regenerate the codes with the mass search+ replace function. I have a protfolio site, and that's only some 10 pages to generate the HTML for, and some Eurobricks topics to do the same. Shouldn't be too much manual work, though I'm pretty sure Eurobricks formatting will totally fall apart, so maybe I'd better go manual... -

I use it as an image hosting site, but I remember that it was that very site that pulled me back into Lego. Somehow Google indexed it pretty good back then. Anyway, this is the curse of "free" internet. You can never know when the sites you use are gone. I still don't know where I should migrate my files, I don't have that many, maybe Blogger can handle it, though it's a real pain in the bottom to upload and use pictures there, but my portfolio site is also there. Sometimes I think it would worth it to buy a domain name and a host service and at least I will be in control, so even if the provider would be gone, the whole shebang could be uploaded to a different provider in a few cliks. No shitting with different interfaces and templates. -

It's what I guessed. They use whaveter fits. I think arrows are more usual, but in that particular case it would have been confusing because the pin shouldn't be pushed all the way in. -

Pastelling can also be confusing (harder to identify where the new parts should go, so you have to rely more on your work memory or have to page back and forth), I guess LEGO tested and found color vomit slightly better for building experience of an average (non AFOL) person. Always contouring can also be confusing because it hides fine details of where the new parts should go (for example pinholes that you can count, occlusions, etc). So occasional pastelling/contouring/arrow/single-part-callout when necessary with slight color vomit is the most convenient from building process point of view. -
Naked Motorbike 1:5 (WIP+questions)
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the comments! I posted of a real motorbike photo too for reference, that's kind of what I have in mind behing the thick fog of laymanship. The double wishbone suspension is there for two reasons: -a bit unusual, so for coolness effect -handles better in Lego version. I want the model to be playable, which means I want to give them to kids without explaining how to handle and without the risk of serious damage. The telescopes are prone to get stuck when pushed in a too slanted position, which is the default position in a bike. So instead of actuating, the whole assembly would bend (I hope that makes sense). My setup has much less problem with it, it actuates however I push the bike and the fork assembly doesn't get damaged. If you have trained eye: does the current version's proportions look acceptable for a streetfigher style bike? Do you notice something that's off? I'm a total layman when it comes to bikes. -
Naked Motorbike 1:5 (WIP+questions)
Lipko replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I reworked the chassis and made the rear arm pivot position more realistic. I'm still struggling hard with the bodywork, but the overall proportions start to look okay (especially in comparison with the previously posted state), though the rear arm is one stud too long. I don't know if I want to put too much effort into it, I kind of like long motorbikes. The clutch cover is fake unfortunately, just like in the new set. -

General Part Discussion
Lipko replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hmm, that new part seems useful, unfortunately not possible to sculpt from an existing part (something I do nowadays so I don't have to wait for new parts to be avaliable). A totally unrelated question. My part finding skills are very poor, and I'm looking for a part if it exists at all. 1L spacer with a pinhole (like the 1L liftarm) but with a rim on one side. Like a small cup. For some reason I remember such part exists. Or if it doesn't exist: the LOTR ring part is half stud thick, or plate thick? I need these for a one unit diameter wedge belt wheel. The rubber band keeps wandering off from a simple 1L liftarm, and the only possible connection is a pin.- 5,143 replies

Generic Contest Discussion
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Maybe the problem with the animal theme is that most people think that means organic shapes. What I meant by animal theme is an animal inspired theme. Be it mecha, kinetic sculpture, replica of a toy, etc. The animal-like figure should be the main part, so an animal transporting vehicle should not be allowed, I hope you get the idea. So no, the model doesn't have to be a fury perfectly moving replica of an actual animal. -

What's happening with Technic?
Lipko replied to Amt0571's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm asking again. Are you sure it's only Technic changing? And not you too? It's normal that you loose interest in something. I think there's simply not much more to Technic in general. Sure, there could be clocks, GBC, some exotic machinery, etc, but you'd be bored of them soon. After all, Lego is about clicking some plastic together for hours to get a model that looks like it was made from random junk. If I wasn't MOCing, probably I wouldn't have bought even the first Technic model, the container truck. It was shockingly crap, a total disappointment after my 10 year dark age. But didn't feel sorry, because the parts were actually important. To sum it up: I think it's perfectly normal to get bored of a hobby, and usually the object of the hobby is the smallest factor in it. Technic may be declining, but not ín such an extreme way this whole topic implies. Lego is a still toy for kids. And you are just tired of pretending it's not. -

I cannot like the new transmission. Sure, it's realistic, but its scale is way off. That huge gearbox for 3+N. Pretty much the same 3+N could be much more compact with the older system. Maybe not that energy efficient, but since it's a manual model, it doesn't have to be (unless it doesn't jam). -

Most AFOLs are collectors. I thinks that's the reason for complaining. I don't complain (usually) because I'm not a collector. So I don't mind if many or most official sets are lame because I don't have to buy them. I can say I'm doing this hobby seriously, yet my lifetime (about 12 years) spending on Lego is about 2500-3000€ -

A little conteo here: Chinese have some unortodox marketing in most markets. Some reviewers act like they are being paid. Many commenters are surely being payed. The hype around Third Body Problem is an example, it was mostly fueled by "agents" (it is a medicore at best sci-fi novel hyped into the stratosphere). I guess also a lot of state money is fuelling their own industry. I saw some of the hyped non-lego models, and I wasn't that impressed. They were shelf queens just like the Lego models, but with much more questinable building techniques. Like stressing parts or extremely fiddly weak connections, and major mechanical fails, like the Alfa Romeo rear suspension (and it couldn't even roll). -

We complain a lot about licenced sets, yet we demand "licenced" MOCs. Custom cars spark zero interest nowadays, while back in the old MOC days, they were on level with licenced cars. I think it's sad because there's more space in creativity in custom car design than making the tenth replica or making dull family cars just for the sake of making something new. This slowly creeps to other subthemes too, it's just people know cars much more than other machinery. -

Or it's just a reflection of us. We became old. If you really look at those old models, you'll find how much Technic has evolved since. Collecting was never a thing for me, maybe that's why I can let building sets go so easily. I haven't bought a big set since maybe ten years. I bought the latest BMW motor bike but it immediately went to the parts bin. -

I' m late to the party but I like those new parts. The cylinder mould looks better so fas than the studded version. I hope it becomes available as parts soon.
