  1. If the voting was the same as Eurovision then us Brits would never get any votes!
  2. Whilst this wouldn't make a massive difference to the number of people who might have voted in this contest, in future would it be possible to allow all entrants of the contest to vote regardless of their post count? As a relative newcomer to the forum, I was able to enter the contest but couldn't vote (or at least have my votes counted if I did vote) for my favourites as my post count isn't high enough. I appreciate the minimum post count requirement is there for a reason, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that anyone that's gone to the effort of submitting an entry themselves probably doesn't have any ulterior motives when it comes to voting (Apologies if this has been suggested before, but 63 pages of this thread is a lot to check!)
  3. Thank you so much to everyone that voted for my entry, and thank you @Jim & @Milan for putting me in your top 3 and for organising the contest. I'm genuinely blown away to have come ahead of so many other fantastic entries The quality of all the entries was immense! Congrats to @Thirdwigg & @Seasider on winning Gold and Silver, it's lovely to see some proper old-school sets come out on top!

Forklift Transporter Original Set: 8872 Features: Truck - HoG steering, trailer coupling mechanism, openable doors Trailer - Retractable landing gear, ramp at rear can be lowered/raised Forklift - HoG steering, mast can be tilted backwards/forwards, forks can be lowered/raised Discussion topic: Photos:
  5. Ooh! That's a good shout, thanks! I'm not too familiar with the construction vehicle sets Luckily I actually had those pieces in my fairly limited selection of system parts!
  6. Thanks! I know what you mean about the HOG steering Trans-Yellow brick, a modern set would probably use a black gear instead of that, but I think having a fake warning beacon as the HOG steering is a key part of the look of the model, and I'm not sure there's a more modern equivalent part? Similarly, a modern set would probably use Trans-Clear tiles for the headlights, but I wanted to keep some of the more iconic details of the set as close to the original as possible :) I see what you mean about the crank for tilting the beam/forks, but weirdly I think the switches on the original look quite old-fashioned on a modern set, but I realise others may think differently! Likewise, I appreciate the wing mirrors on the forklift may not be to everyone's taste (not all forklifts have wing mirrors after all), but I really like them! :) Thanks! :) EDIT: I know it's not part of the original set, and it probably won't make it into my official entry submission photos, but I couldn't resist making a pallet and some barrels for the forklift to carry! :D
  7. Thanks! I had the same thought about the door posts, so I've made that change. I know what you mean about the height of the cabin, but from side on it's exactly the same as the original, so I'm gonna keep it at that height. I finally had time to work on the model some more. I've reworked the sides of the cabin, adding in the black stripe below the red panels and some wing mirrors: But not only that, I ended up making them into openable doors! And I also got my armrests in, so I'm much happier all round with the cabin now! I've made some very minor changes to the front of the trailer, and added some lights to the back: The biggest changes though are on the forklift... I managed to rework the rear of the chassis and find an alternative way of limiting the steering angle (mostly through pure luck ) which meant I could make the rear narrower to stay more in keeping with the original: I had to compromise on the half bush I wanted at the back, but I'm mostly happy with the alternative. And finally I reworked the lift support frame using the new 15L alternate hole liftarms, which is much sturdier than my previous version (and also added a couple of orange lights over the front wheels and some wing mirrors): And... I think I'm finally finished! This has been a super fun project! Well apart from attaching the fork to the chain... Now I remember why the first time my parents heard me swear was while I was making this set as a kid
  8. Thanks. I do like how the forklift looks as it is, so I'm most likely going to leave it as it is. I might still try making a separate version with a narrower rear end just to see how it compares side-by-side. The gap over the truck wheels will definitely be reduced - I'd forgotten that the original has a black stripe below the red beam, so I can add that in below on mine and it should fill the gap a bit better. That's a good idea about adding things like mirrors/lights, thanks. Since I've already put in steering wheels that aren't on the original, it makes sense to add those extra little details too. That's also a good shout about the pin connectors on the cranks - thanks! Thanks, yeah, that red 16T gear does bother me cos it kinda sticks out colour-wise compared to the rest of the model... Unfortunately at the moment the 3L pins with bushes help maintain the rigidity of the frame, but I think I'll try and rework the frame a bit so I can swap that red 16T gear for a LBG one on an axle.
  9. Update time! The forklift is largely finished now: The arms for the lifting mechanism were a bit of a pain to find a solution that was 2 studs wide but with the holes running down the centre. I'm pretty happy with my solution, even if it isn't necessarily the most elegant thing in the world! I've stuck with the wider rear end for the time being: At the moment the chassis is 5 studs wide to act as a limiter on the steering angle (without this the wheels rub on the panels above at full lock). If I reduce the width of the rear end, you can then see the end of the chassis which doesn't look great overall. I'm still open to reducing the width at the rear, but it's going to involve some reworking of the chassis, and finding a different solution to limit the steering angle. That said, I do quite like the wider rear end - I think it fits pretty well with the chunkier overall feel of my forklift. I've ended up making the forks 2 studs wide rather than 1 stud like the original. Initially that was simply because I couldn't come up with a solution that didn't involve the use of an L-shaped piece to attach the 7L liftarm to, but I actually think the wider fork suits the overall look of my version, so I'm happy with the result! I've also settled on a neater solution for the front of the trailer, which I think looks a lot better than the slapped on 3x11 panel I had before: And finally here's a couple of shots of the whole model: I think the model is largely complete now. Apart from a couple of colour changes, the only bits left to potentially change are the gap above the front wheels on the truck and the width of the rear end of the forklift. I am of course open to any other constructive criticism anyone may have
  10. Thanks! Haha yeah, that's a fair point... I guess I'm going for precision with a hint of artistic licence Reducing the width at the rear end is on my list of things to try and tweak at some point, but I think it's gonna prove to be tricky to find a solution that can include that half bush.. But half the fun is trying to find solutions to these kind of challenges! Thanks!
  11. Thanks! This is my first contest and only my second MOC (since coming out of my dark ages at least) so my expectations are pretty low I'm just enjoying the challenge and the nostalgia! Looking at the wheel arches, the gap on mine is slightly higher than the original, so I think I may be able to rework them slightly which hopefully will make it easier to add the armrests. To be honest, those wheels hadn't even occured to me! Although as it happens, I'm alright for space at the front, so the double wheels aren't an issue. Plus I think the double wheels are a key part of the original model and one of the things I'm keen to maintain if possible! Thanks! Thanks! The lift is the next thing I need to figure out. At the moment I'm planning on keeping the mechanism the same as the original using the link chain, but I need to work out the best way of attaching the forks to it. I've largely finished the bodywork of the forklift now (albeit with colours needing to be changed): I also decided to reconfigure the structure at the rear so I could add a grey half bush like the original (although mine is purely cosmetic unlike the original): It's a small detail, but to me it didn't feel right not having it there!
  12. Yeah, when you look at real life forklift transporters they can quite often carry 2 forklifts at once, so I know what you mean! That said, in this instance I'm going to keep to the same scale as the original. I've made some progress on the forklift, mainly setting up the proportions and working out where the functions are going to fit in, but I've also got some of the bodywork started on the rear portion: As with the truck, it's 1 stud wider and the wheelbase is 0.5 studs longer than the original. Currently it's the same length, but I think I might make it slightly longer (probably only by 1 stud), as the back of the cab is currently 1 stud further forward, so it's a bit off proportionally. The original has quite a few small 45 degree angle pieces which are proving a bit tricky to replicate, but I think the panels work pretty well. (Needless to say, I don't have all the parts in yellow at the moment! ) Thanks! I've come up with a better solution for the trailer, although I'm still not 100% happy with it: (As usual, I've run out of the right colour parts!) I know what you mean, but the original model actually has quite a big gap above the front wheels, so I think I'm going to leave it in keeping with that. The red 9L mudguards from the 42098 Car Transporter actually fill the gap really well, so I may well make a separate version of the model outside of the contest that uses those wheel arches and has a more modern technic feel to it.
  13. Update time! Finally got round to doing a BL order this week, so I have pretty well finished the truck and trailer: I had to slightly modify the end of the coupling of the trailer from the original so that it works reliably with the coupling mechanism on my truck, but it stays locked in place nicely now: Overall I'm pretty pleased with how it looks! I decided to stick with the modern style tyres, I think they look better overall and match better with the trailer tyres and the modern, studless style. There's still a couple of bits I'm not entirely happy with though. I'm not too keen on the 11x3 panel at the front of the trailer to mimic the 10x2 plate of the original. It just looks a bit stuck on and awkward to me It's annoying the 7x3 panel doesn't come in red, as that would have been ideal with a couple of 3L liftarms to fit between the main liftarms rather than sitting on top of them. I could stack a bunch of 2L liftarms or some connectors together to fit between, but that feels like a bit of a cop out solution. Hopefully I can come up with something better eventually! The other thing is probably really minor, but it's kinda bugging me The seats in the truck don't have an arm rests on the outside of them, just the one in the middle: Unfortunately it's right where some half-stud height offsets meet from different directions and there's not a lot of room to work something in, so it might take a bit of reworking in some areas for something that I'm probably being unnecessarily picky over Next job: Start the forklift itself!
  14. Thanks! That was my thinking with the mudguards as well, but I've just re-read the contest information topic and the emphasis is actually really on replicating the original model as closely as possible, so I think the mudguards will have to be left off in this instance. That said, I'm thinking about maybe making another version after the contest in a more modern technic style, so I can save the mudguards for that one!
  15. Thanks! The truck is pretty much finished now, apart from some colour changes and a couple of missing system parts for the lights/HoG steering (and possibly some minor tweaks in a couple of places): I'm a little bit torn on the side of the cab though. The 9L arched mudguard (42531) would fill the space above the wheel perfectly (albeit with a bit of tweaking to the front grill to fit it in) and would suit a modern studless style truck, but I'm not sure it would be in keeping with the original model I think for now I'll stick with keeping as close to the original as I can, then maybe see how it would look with the mudguard once the trailer and forklift are done. The trailer is starting to take shape now as well: As with the truck, it's one stud wider than the original model, but the overall length is identical. The wheels use the same style set-up as the original a well, with the 3 wheels on each side connected to a single liftarm that pivots around the centre axle:
  16. Thanks! The fuel tanks are probably my favourite detail so far. I'll definitely be ordering a set of wheels in white to match the colour of the originals. Yeah I know what you mean, the current tyres do fit better with the modern technic style trucks. I think I'll get a set of the 56898 tyres when I do my BL order and see how they look on the model and then decide which looks better. Thanks! It's always tempting to try and add extra features/details, but I'm gonna try and stick as close to the original as possible. Here's a couple of update photos: (Needless to say, some of the colours will be changed eventually! )
  17. Yeah, after some tinkering I have to agree that those tyres are just too wide to have them doubled up on the rear axle. Which is a shame because the tread pattern is perfect for the truck! Thanks for the heads up on the 43.2x14 (56898) tyre, that's definitely more truck-like than the other 43.2x14 tyres I currently have. After a bit of experimenting with some even larger tyres (32019 62.4x20mm) that work perfectly in proportion with the 43.2x14mm tyres on the trailer, I decided that the overall scale of ~1.4:1 just seemed unnecessarily big for the extra features I was considering adding and didn't seem in keeping with the spirit of the contest. So instead I'm going to stick with as close to a 1:1 scale as I can using the 43.2x14mm tyres, and this is my progress on the truck so far: And a little side-by-side shot with the original: The overall length is identical to the original, but it's 1 stud wider and the wheel base is 0.5 studs shorter.
  18. Thanks! I've now realised, having got my hands on the original version, that my choice of wheels aren't quite the same proportion as the originals. My trailer tyres are ~1.4x larger in diameter than the originals, but my truck tyres are only ~1.1x larger in diameter than the originals, so the overall proportions of the whole model will be bit a skewed if I stick with these wheels. Think I'll have to do a bit of experimenting to find a decent balance. I do have the original small wheels, but I also ordered some of these in white which are the closest modern equivalent: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=55982c03#T=C

    Hi everybody!

Hi everybody, my name is Rich and I'm from London, England. I've been a fan of Lego since I was a kid (started off with Duplo!) and enjoyed various themes over the years (City, Space, Pirates) and then moved on to Technic as I got a bit older (loved the 8880 Supercar set). I drifted away from Lego in my teens, but got drawn back to it after I was bought a small Technic set as a joke 30th birthday present! Over the last few years I've bought some more Technic and Creator Expert sets to build as a way of de-stressing and I've definitely got the Lego bug again now. I found Eurobricks from the Lamborghini speculation thread and stayed after seeing all the amazing MOC's people were creating. I've never really tried my hand at making an MOC before but I'm definitely feeling inspired to give it a go at some point now! Looking forward to joining the community! :)
