  1. I like it. There's something refreshing about taking an old set and adding more detail and making it your own. Seems like that is the essence of Lego to me. I like the fact that you used classic faces. It lets you know that it's still a classic set.

  2. Thanks for the review. I'll be looking to pick this up. I was thinking about adding 2 wall sections from the Uruk-Hai Army set. You wouldn't by chance have 2 sets and be able to take a pic of what that looks like? Doesn't hurt to ask. :classic:

Thanks for the review! Excellent set. Yesterday I watched The Two Towers (again  )

Oh you know a bunch of us will be watching the trilogy over the weekend as we build.

  3. Hi

i just found yesterday in my "hidden" toy store a sealed 10199 Winter Toy Shop. This set is from 2009 and still there for the listprice 59.99€...

I see a good chance getting it cheaper because its 3 years old plus out of season! I did read the reviews. Wgat do you think, it is a wothy set? Funnily i would get this at bricklink for 45€ plus shipping, also sealed.

    Dino

Definitely, buy the Toy Shop. It's a good set.

  4. Well I must say I HATE huge grins on minifigs, as well as big faces. I'm fine with the expression they're trying to pull, but not how big their mouths and eyes sometimes are..

Anakin in the Podracer set comes to mind.

They didn't get this one right at all. He should have had an expression of hard concentration and focus, not gritting his teeth in anger and/or frustration.

  5. Come on. It's clearly a Geisha. Everybody knows its a geisha. So Lego can get around things by simply renaming them? In that case a companion' should be fine ;)

I thought the white face and red lips indicated geisha as well. I may be totally wrong about that, but that's what I thought.

  6. It's possible they had processing issues during molding. Environmental conditions and/or a bad lot of raw plastic material are factors during injection molding. One has to always monitor the moisture levels of the raw material and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity and make adjustments to the mold machines as needed. You may even have to dry the material before making parts.

  7. I would like to further illustrate the adult content in Shaun of the Dead beyond any kind of violence. While it is true that Lego has sets that are geared more for older teens and adults the media the sets are based on are nowhere near the level of adult content like Shaun of the Dead. I can totally understand why Lego does not want to associate with such a movie. It seems to me that Lego's standard is more like what is acceptable for regular TV networks as far as content. They could easily show Indiana Jones, POTC, LOTR, Marvel, and DC movies on regular network television with almost no editing for content as far as I can tell.

I pulled this from the IMDB entry for Shaun of the Dead

    1 use of the c**t

    2 uses of mother f****r

    45 uses of f**k

    32 uses of s**t

9 uses of pr**k (one written.)

    2 uses of a**

    5 uses of n****r

    4 uses of c**ks****r

    1 use of t**t

    2 uses of w****r

    1 use of w**k

    2 uses of m**f

    4 uses of c****s.

I'm just saying that Lego draws the line somewhere, and I suppose this movie is over their line.

  8. If anyone else has another answer please let me know that would be great! I really want to get series 6 and 7 in one trip!

    Thanks, Rail Co

The short answer is yes they may have both Series out at the same time. They won't take Series 6 off the shelf to make room for Series 7. They usually keep whatever they have on the shelf. I still see some Series 5 sometimes. However, it depends on the particular TRU you visit. They could very well have tons of both Series 6 or 7. Or, they could have sold out of Series 6 by now and only have Series 7.

Officially, they still carry Series 5 and 6. Didn't see a listing for Series 7 yet, but we all know they have them in the store now.

  9. Don't forget they can reject sets for this reason. From what I've read so far the whole process seems very rigorous and proposals are treated as products not competition winners. I think that might be part of what I'm missing in my previous post. People seem to have an expectation that if a set gets the votes it should be made and anything else is a hyperbolic "slap in the face". If they think it will be a failure they're not going to make it. Businesses don't work that way. EVE might surprise you though. While it has a small player base they are crazy fanatical about it.

One thing people should also keep in mind is that it's easy to join Cuusoo and vote for anything one simply thinks is a cool idea. The votes simply mean people like the idea, nothing more. It is not really in indication that all 10,000 people who voted would actually buy the set. It's an entirely different matter for Lego to invest in developing and producing a set that needs to sell in order to be a profitable project.

Shaun of the Dead, though not just a gory exploitation film by any means, is still an adult film. It makes absolute sense that LEGO cannot be associated with that, even if they were going to market the set to adults. Just because LEGO makes sets for adults does not mean that they forget their overall brand image when they do so.

The argument that LEGO makes sets based on movies not for children is bullocks. PotC, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia - though they might have some (tame) gore now and again, these are kids' films. Sure, some carry PG-13 ratings (in the US), but there's no doubt in my mind that 8 year olds still enjoy them. Lord of the Rings is the darkest LEGO theme out there, but it's still a franchise full of extravagant set pieces, epic heroes, spooky villains, bravery, battles - all things that kids can enjoy, even if they have to hide their eyes at some of the scariest parts. Shaun of the Dead is a film made for adults, plain and simple. It is a thoughtful film, and a fun film, but for adults. It's not suited to LEGO's image at all.

There is a lot of foul language in the movie. That alone would be grounds for Lego not to do it IMO.

  10. Thanks for the review. This is a set I plan to pick up in the near future. Although I like the set and minifigures overall, I can't help but wonder if Iron Man's helmet would have looked better had the face plate not been made to flip up. I think they could have made it a removable helmet, but just not so big if they hadn't designed the face plate feature.

  11. Back when I was a kid I did this MOC of a small one-man copter inspired by the classic Appleseed anime. I recently discovered it when I finally got around to opening a box of childhood toys my father sent to me. It was nostalgic to say the least looking back at my old Lego and seeing what I was doing. I even found my old Pirates Forbidden Island in a plastic box with the monkey holding a space gun. Not sure what I was thinking.

Here is a screenshot of my inspiration. This is the classic anime Appleseed released in 1988.

Here is the MOC I did as a kid. Of course only being able to watch it on VHS tape I only ever caught a short clip of it, so the MOC was my interpretation from memory. At the time I simply used what pieces I had available to me. Sadly, this meant coloring some white bricks with a black marker. It also meant using a broken rotor blade spindle which used to be for 4 blades instead of 2.

    P1050118-1.jpg

I decided that it would be fun to recreate my childhood MOC and refine it a bit using LDD. I still may completely redesign it to mimic my original inspiration more closely.

I am rather fond of the asymmetrical design style. Somehow it seems more realistic that way. From this angle you can see the twin rocket/missile launcher and front cannon. The gold elements were meant to represent various targeting, navigational, or analytical sensors.

    Copter1.jpg

Rather than a tail rotor a ducted air system is used.

    Copter2.jpg

From this side you can see a large energy weapon.

    Copter3.jpg

    I added some gauges.

    Copter4.jpg

My only problem in LDD is how to place these thrusters.

    Copter5.jpg

My intent is to place them like this. Any tips would be appreciated.

BTW, here's the monkey I was telling you about. He was just how I left it as a kid. Ditto for the spacemen. I had forgotten that I used to always flip the heads to simulate a gold tinted visor like a real astronaut would have. My daughter asked me why I had a bunch of naked minifigures as a kid.

  12. Rectangles are necessary. Else why do you think actual bricks used in buildings are not square? They are not usually 1:2 either.

I think this reason is the best explanation. You can't really build a stable wall with a cubic brick. You need more overlap in order to be secure. That's what I am guessing was the design intent from the start. That is, to have bricks to build structures.

  13. Ah! I enjoy this topic. I'm sorry but i'll try to be honest.

I'm one of the terrible & hated minifigs hunter. I use the feeling method to find and buy 102 romans! The same for the other minifigs: zombie, elf or spartan. For me the best thing in this hunt...is the hunt itself! I'm not a reseller, i collect all the minis I buy. Sometimes after my perfect work another customer cannot find a particular minifigs. Well it is normal, in this game the winner is the first, Smart and full-of-money man.

I'm not Consider myself a bad man for this. Sometimes I helped kids to find what they want (NOT for the spartans sorry) :-) but in every game there is loser... And LEGO and collecting lego (and feeling the packets) is a game!

    Nausicaa

(i really hate barcode or dots, you can enjoy the hunting only with the feeling method!)

You won't get any grief from me. All's fair in love and Lego CMF's.:laugh: I suppose with the early series it was harder to find what you are looking for, but I honestly feel from Series 3 on it has not been a problem as there seemed to be plenty out there for people to find and buy. My own vice is/was the Grey Alien from Series 6. I'm going to stop at 20 though, not 100. I'm up to around 12 or 13 at the moment.

  14. I was able to sell off a bunch of toys in order to have money to buy the Modular Fire Brigade. However, I was just at the Lego store and I noticed that they had 2 Town Halls with damaged boxes for $167. I have enough money to buy either one, but I am conflicted inside about getting a good price on a more expensive set and grabbing Fire Brigade before it is completely gone from retail. I suppose in the big scheme of things $30 is not a huge deal and perhaps I will regret missing the Fire Brigade more than I would regret saving $30. Maybe, I'm just looking for affirmation that I'm making the right decision.

    What are your thoughts?

  15. I feel that sometimes the sets with new molds, large pieces, or high minifigure count (per piece) tend to be a bit higher priced per piece. Those sets you mention would appear to fall into those categories not to mention the Dino theme. Of course this is just anecdotal observation on my part.
