  1. Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Yatkuu, it is equally funny that I never thought to do anything with the minifigures to help indicate the day.

This is the first customization I've really done of it. My mind is already working on November. I don't think it will be as easy as October. There are a lot of monster minifgures.

And darkdragon, I agree it's a little crowded on top. Couldn't stand leaving anyone out.

I love the Lego calendar set that came out this summer more as an inspiration than how it came out of the box. darkdragon showed us an extreme of how awesome it can become with a big update, but I thought it might be nice to have a thread where people can share the little ways that they have updated the Lego calendar either to reflect the season or just for variety.

I bought two of them because I keep one at home and I take one to my classroom (my students love it and I have become the cool teacher with most of my boys because of it). I love Halloween so I gave them both a Monster Squad minifigure theme for October.

This is the more elaborate version featuring lots of minifigures, creepy crawlies and glow-in-the-dark bricks.

This is the version I'm taking to my classroom. It has a few less parts that might walk off but still has some monsters and more fall-inspired color scheme.

I invite anyone to share what they have done with the calendar because I am really more interested in hearing about and seeing what others have done as I am in sharing my own work.

  3. That's really nice, especially the interior. As lightningtiger said, the vending machine is excellent. I also like the different types of window arrangements on the backside. There's a lot of variety but still balance from floor to floor.

  4. That's amazing. I think the use of the underside of the plate comes off very natural and intentional rather than awkward. I love the smoke billows coming out of the building.

  5. I like the idea of Hogwarts additions. They're like the Lego equivalent of an expansion pack. I'd like to see more classrooms and more detailed dormitories. I would love it if they would release a Hogsmeade set though and would certainly love to see an addition to the Diagon Alley set. I'd actually like to see Privet Drive and the Dursleys turned into sets as well.

  6. I second using Creator sets to build your collection. They are the basis of what I use for my MOCs. (I can't bear to take my modular buildings apart and I can't afford multiples or they would be a good source of pieces.) I also think they are good for building a repertoire of simple building techniques because they have multiple instructions to try out. I use my old building manuals for reference a lot for one reason or another when making MOCs.

As far as base plates, it really depends what you're trying to make. I'm fairly new to attempting good MOCs so I usually don't work on anything bigger than the 16x32 stud plates.

And I think it's best to build whatever you are inspired to build. I keep a little notebook of ideas of what I want to build and what I realistically think I can build with my limited brick collection and skills. I usually start with a small idea and it grows as I work on it and get into my brick collection.

    Good luck and have fun.

  7. I mostly regret missing out on the Western Theme. It has a lot of stuff that not like anything that I have. I did regret the Harry Potter sets but have made up for it with the newer sets. And I regret that I got into the modulars just a little too late because the Cafe Corner was discontinued before I could get together the money to buy it. Since I'll never be able to afford the price now, my modular collection won't ever be complete.

  8. I dabble a little. If I like it, I buy it whether it's in one of my favorite themes or not. I mostly buy modular sets and creator sets that feature buildings (as opposed to vehicles). I've bought a couple of Harry Potter sets because I like the buildings. I want a couple of the new Kingdoms sets and a couple of the PoTC sets.

I have to admit that I have no interest in Star Wars (from a Lego standpoint, I love the movies), Atlantis, Ninjago or Alien Conquest.

I like some of the City Buildings and Pharaoh's Quest stuff but I haven't bought many because they are never my favorite of what is out at the time.

  9. Who do you build for? What kind of building appeals most to you? And most importantly; why?

I build for myself because I like to create things. It makes my mind happy to think about what I want to make happen and then solve the problems of making that happen with the limited materials I have. I do like to share my creations though.

I like to make buildings the most. Houses and shops. I also like to create environments for my minifigures.

I build because it's fun and relaxing and because it makes my mind think.

  10. I have decided to be brave and be the first to try entering this category. Perhaps I can inspire others with better modifying skills to post their stuff. All of my minifigures are mixes and matches of existing Lego components. All of the accessories are Lego accessories.

    Entry Name – The Rivals

The Story – Rival Seers compete for the fortunes of the minifigure community while life goes on all around them.

    The minifigures:

(Visible in front view of vignette, working bottom to top)

    1. Renfield – Every vampire needs a human minion to help them with the peculiarities of their condition. Unfortunately insanity and an appetite for vermin seem to come with this job. This minifigure’s accessories are disheveled hair, a spider, and a rat. Also features a crazy looking face and rumpled clothing.

    2. The Mechanic – A good ole boy with a good ole work ethic. This minifigure features a ball cap from his favorite team and a hard working flannel shirt. His accessories are a couple tools.

    3. Japanese Grandma – All Geishas must grow up. Features a face with old features, a pretty but rather conservative kimono, a parasol and some cherries.

    4. Pops Orchestra Conductor – The white blazer and maroon pants show that this maestro favors Sousa Marches over Mozart Symphonies and show tunes over song cycles. Also features a conducting baton, gray hair, and a face with glasses.

    5. Red Riding Hood – She’s off to granny’s with her traveling cloak and goodies. Features a feminine face, skirt, red cape, hood, basket and croissant.

    6. Amateur Film Director – If he films enough stuff and barks enough orders through his megaphone, his big break might just be an editing room away, until then, he’s still his own camera man. Features a suave hairstyle, face with big smile and sunglasses, video camera and megaphone.

    7. The Martian – He comes in peace, he’s just lost because his communicator ran out of juice. Features futuristic outer space clothing, bright green skin, peace flag, complicated but currently dead futuristic communication device.

    8. Super Fan – Nobody loves the Clutchers more than this guy and he has the air horn to prove it. Features jersey, ball cap, air horn, and pennant.

(Visible in Back View of Vignette, working bottom to top)

    9. Trick-or-Treater – He’s not really a ghost, he’s just dressed like one. Give him candy and he’ll go away. Features a glow-in-the-dark ghost costume and a bag for goodies.

    10. Amateur Skier – Awesome designer Sweater, check; coordinated helmet, gloves, skis and poles, check; athletic ability, not so much. Features all of the above and a suitably terrified expression for his first trip down the big slope.

    11. Ping Pong Champion – No one can beat him at table tennis. No one. Features intense face and hair, paddle, and ping-pong ball.

    12. Elven Priestess – Features a highly decorated green dress, cloak, gem, chalice, and feather for her hair for optimum mysticism.

    13. Fortune Teller – (you can actually see her face in the front view and her back in the back view) Madame Brick sees all in her crystal ball, even if she only has one eye. Features feminine face with eye patch, cape, and crystal ball.

    14. Rock Singer – Yes, I know there is already a pop singer, but this girl is way too tough for pop. Features trendy but tough hairstyle, awesome jacket with space patches and lots of zippers, a microphone, a singing face and a bunch of attitude.

    15. Troll Doll – They were popular in the 1960’s and again in the 1990’s. With hair this awesome it is only a matter of time before they become popular again. This one features colorful clothes, short legs, crazy green hair, and a hairbrush.

    16. Sand Volleyball Player – He’s got a surfer t-shirt, sunglasses and a ball, just add sand.
