  1. I once ordered a few parts on BrickLink from a seller in the Netherlands. He sent them by airmail the day after receiving payment. They took five weeks to reach me in the UK. Five weeks! It's hardly any distance at all. What took the Dutch/British postal systems so long?

This sounds like exactly the same problem I had 3 months ago. I bought some stuff from a (very good) Netherlands seller on the 24th June, and was sent the next day. It arrived on the 6th August, 6 weeks later, after both me and the seller assumed the package lost, the seller had sent me more of the "lost" items and a partial refund (and that had all turned up) and I had bought the other parts I had ordered in the meantime. Not to mention I got packages from the US and Canada sent after that order that arrived well before it. I have no idea why it took so long when other packages from the Netherlands bought at the same time (and even the same seller!) arrived on time :look:

At least what I experienced wasn't an isolated case, and I know just how frustrating it is so I can sympathise...

  2. The descriptions said that Umarak had brown in it... but having had a peek at the prelims, I swear that it's dark red. Or are my eyes deceiving me, because I've wanted the large barb in a red colour for YEARS... :look:

Still, don't they use the same torso SW used? It's getting a bit confusing...

They do not use the same torso that SW used... these Bionicle torsos are quite different shapes from the SW torsos. Compare the top half of both the torso shells

  3. I'll be honest, the piece from SW Constraction I least expected to see on the 2016 Bionicles was that torso shell. I don't know, it really doesn't seem very "Bionicle-y" to me. Sad that the leg add-on doesn't appear, but from Gali's description it sounds like the SW shoulder armour is appearing, which makes me happy. But orange, on Gali? Not sure how I feel about that. I wonder if Gali or Ketar has a little dark blue in them?

The other piece I didn't expect to see mentioned is the Skull Army armour add-on. At least it's a new recolour, and parts in more colours is always welcome in my book.

But the figure that has me most excited is Umarak. Antlers, sounds like he hunted a deer-like creature and is wearing it's horns as a sort of trophy as opposed to him actually being a mutant deer-like creature. And I sincerely hope the trans-green is trans-dark green for the sake of something different (plus I'd think it'd work on such a character), though I wouldn't mind trans-bright green too much. Trans-yellowish green (the colour of the shells on Skull Scorpio) I wouldn't be so keen on seeing on Umarak.

And fingers crossed the piston add-on makes an appaearance in gunmetal or black, given they are confirmed to reappear :excited:

Overall, I'm intrigued and it sounds pretty promising (except the use of the SW torso, why oh why... I can't really imagine it working but if it means bigger figures and they do actually end up looking good, then I'm all for it. No point rehashing the 2015 builds, there's nothing I dislike more than carbon copies and repetition).

  4. Those are beautiful. In the truest definition of this word. Fantastic models.

    Thankyou very much

I forgot to mention in my original post that the game board design credit goes to Darksiderz, and credit for all the renders and GIF spinnies and putting all the models together in the overall file goes to me :classic: The final LXF linked at the very top is designed with the pieces put into groups so that it is actually possible to sort of play chess on it, given you have the patience and a powerful enough computer that won't make LDD crash while you move the pieces about

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

Those who follow my Flickr photostream and/or that of Darksiderz should have known this topic was coming when I revealed the first part of it on Flickr  So yeah, I've been a little quiet on the MOC front lately, but that was because I was actually collaborating with fellow builder Darksiderz on a rather enormous LDD collab project, which, a you can tell from the title and the first picture of this post, is a giant game of chess, complete with Bionicle sized original characters. The theme of this is "Light vs Dark", I am responsible for the Dark Side characters, which comprise of a hodgepodge of mutant insectoids, ethereals and necromancers, while the Light Side characters were built by Darksiderz, and they are mystical energy beings in armour. (If you're wondering, yes, he has given me permission to post his characters here, likewise I've given him permission to share my pictures in a topic on BZP :classic: ) So, without further ado, here's the individual characters:

Dark Side Characters by TheOneVeyronian (me, of course  )

    Pawns

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

The Dark Side Pawns are akin to alien drones, and are the children of the Queen. Usually, chess pawns are uninteresting at best, but I tried to give each of the 8 pawns some individuality, altering their secondary colour but keeping their primary colour black.

    Rook

    21473110341_3ce2166d4e_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

This originally started out as a mutant tree, however, when I compared it's size to the rest of the figures, I went back and revised this piece completely. All that remains of the tree is the stump, and now it's home to a giant mutant worm (and my personal favourite  ).

    Knight

    20850433543_393da58062_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

Basically a mutant ghost horse with horns. Enough said

    Bishop

    21288543200_942704141b_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

A creepy alien necromancer and controller of the ethereal Dark Knight (nothing to do with the Batman films  ). His deadly Skull Club serves two purposes as both a necromancing staff and a Light Side bashing weapon. It's advisable to not be diagonal to him

    Queen

    21302113998_e5539c2db6_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

Mother of the Pawn characters and the most powerful piece in Chess, it was only right to make the Queen the most beautifully grotesque insectoid being I could. She looks beautiful, kind and caring to the Dark Side characters, but hideous and absolutely deadly to everyone else.

    King

    20873841254_48f1fa7755_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

Lastly the KIng, a mutant 4 armed insectoid centaur (goodness knows why) with an affinity for dark blood rubies and ridiculously oversized crowns that looks more like a conical hat. He lets his wife the Queen do all the fighting and prefers to try and not get involved.

    Pawns

    21273963119_b10eb9e569_z.jpg

GIF spinnie - LXF file (My Brickshelf is hosting them because I'm the only one with Brickshelf  )

"My idea for those was to remotely resemble Roman Centurion warriors, with the Shield and Helmet clearly conveying that part. However, I opted in for an axe as their main weapon since LDD did not have a sword shape that I felt would suit them. You'll notice that there are slight color variations across them, with some parts of them in different trans colors. Those are to keep the pawn pieces distinguishable if an actual game of chess was to be played using this board (LDD file)."

    Rook

    21280913580_294686427e_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

"Originally I was trying to build a Machine Golem or some sort of Construct Being, but then I opted in for a kneeling, hammer-wielding warrior that towers over the pawns. One of my favorites in spite of its relative simplicity, particularly the shoulder armor bit."

    Knight

    20853549163_0fd39b6a89_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

"The crown jewel of my creations (on this board that is!). I've been forever trying to make this head design work with a beak that wasn't absolutely misaligned and silly-looking, and I think I managed to pull it off! I'm also proud of how the wings turned out. This bad boy is also a mount for a Knight, which you can see better by clicking the link to the spinnie!"

    Bishop

    21297813768_7f473f9e67_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

"One of my more "ordinary" looking characters, and featuring a decorative ornament design on the back. I quite like how I did the head as well as his shoulder armor."

    Queen

    21307589950_46299f81c8_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

"Her Royal Highness is a decisive Seraphic Queen, a conqueror of the shadows and a force to be reckoned with. The hovering stance along with the wings help accentuate the versatility and sheer power of the Queen as a chess piece. This is basically a revamp of one of my older builds, with a few changes made to it to help it better fit the role of Queen. The parts that have been modified are mainly the head, shoulders, addition of wings, and the staff. Click here if you want to see what it was before."

    King

    21507073475_290c8366af_z.jpg

    GIF spinnie - LXF file

"The King, quite honestly my least favorite piece, but the biggest on my side of the board (if I remember correctly). I like how the head and sword turned out, but not much else to be quite honest. I think the cape could still use a bit of work, but by the time I got to the King I was itching to complete the whole build. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed building it, along with every other character in the Light Faction. "

So, I hoped you enjoyed the fruits of this collab project (the first one I've done, and I doubt it will be the last either). Comments, constructive criticism and naming of favourites always welcome

  6. Everything is right as it should be, most probably you have not rightly setup your lighting rig cos it looks like your AA is not 1 2 (as it should be for the final render)

Of course, now it seems obvious that I needed to change the anti-aliasing settings, because they don't look so grainy in the tiny preview images my computer gives me, and the one thing that POV-Ray tutorials teached me was render at twice the resolution without AA (it looks grainy), then resize the file to the resolution you desired (then it looks less grainy). I'm clearly an idiot for forgetting that the same applies here too

I really should find out what all the abbreviations mean in the .sc file, then I'd be able to tweak them a bit better. I'm too used to POV-Ray with it's different way (and, to me anyway, slightly easier) of writing commands I guess

BTW, your BR tutorials look very interesting bublible, I'll try them out when I get an excuse to

  7. I just noticed something not quite right with some of my recent renders with pearl colours in. Renders done with the latest version of BR now have this weird "speckly" surface on the pearl gold parts. For example, this.

Compare it to a render of the same model done in the previous version of BR here.

What is possibly causing this rather unsightly speckliness on the metallic parts (silver has the same problem, but not Titanium Metallic weirdly), and is there a way that I can fix them? I'm using the default .sc file, unaltered.

EDIT: Didn't realise the problem had already been brought up and apparently the graininess is unavoidable for metallic materials. I tried altering "samples" in the .sc file and it didn't make any difference... shame because I think the graininess is horrible, parts of the Titanium Metallic on the model I linked have picked up Warm Gold grains and ruins the look of the model somewhat... is there definitely no way of fixing this? :look:

  8. I too hope that the dragons aren't too girly either, but I have heard (from a friend of mine who's seen the retailer catalog for next year, same friend who told me when the Ninjago Temple was going to be revealed) that there will be quite a few of the baby dragon pieces that debuted in the Pegasus Sleigh present in a few different colours in these sets (possibly recolours to match the Fire, Earth and Water elements I'm guessing), and also that the brick-built (I think that's what he said) adult dragons are apparently a bit smaller than your typical brick built Ninjago dragon (like the Titanium Dragon for example). That's all I know.

  9. Pretty sure you can scratch October, also.

In the US, yes, but I don't think we've seen the October promos for Europe yet, so there is still some vague hope.

But if it's clear that it isn't coming out this year, guess I'll be heading to BL or eBay for it. After all there seems to be a rather plentiful supply of them on both sites (even outside Russia) for a polybag we don't even know the origins of yet!

  10. There's no automatic way.. I've prepared this little LXF file that has a perfectly centered round plate. You can use it as a reference for your rotation.

As for joining the images, there are plenty of tools to do that, even online one. Look at other answers, somebody already pointed out some solutions.

Well, I figured out a way to get the model to centre itself via way of importing the model into a new LXF file that has a 2x2 plate in the centre, but that's not always practical I admit! I'll have to look at that LXF later, I'm not on a computer right now.

As for the other thing, I already figured it out in the post above yours ;)

  11. If you’re not afraid of the command line, look at ImageMagick: http://www.imagemagick.org/ It’s free and can do everything.

Else, a web-search for “create animated GIF” will lead you to a lot of websites that can do it for you or explain how to do it with your favorite image editor.

Thanks. I ended up Googling GIF makers and now I know how to make one. And here it is (note this isn't my MOC, it's part of a collab project I'm doing with a friend and I chose one of his models to test the animation creator):

    chess_knight_light.gif

Now to just figure out the ideal zoom in LDD to get the biggest view of the MOC, because cropping loads of pictures at once is boring

  12. Thanks for the Bluerender update! Glad to see things like resolution are changeable without having to resort to changing the .sc file all the time. I have a couple of questions though and they relate to all these animated spinnies everybody's making in BR, and I need a little help with it.

First off, is there a way to centre the pivot/rotation point in LDD or BR? My first try at the rotation caused my MOC to almost disappear off the render and I want to get the rotation to be as central as possible. How does one do that?

Also, how do I combine the resulting PNG renders to create the animation (presumably a GIF file)? Is that done using external software or does BR combine them together for you (I haven't let one run to the end yet I'll be honest)? Last time I made GIF animations was when I was doing GCSE's several years ago using Macromedia Flash, and I don't have access to that software anymore, so some tips would be welcome :classic:

EDIT: Okay, I figured out the first one, kind of (only by importing the model into a new file and making sure it's nearly dead centre there though), but I've been left with 30 separate renders of the same model and I don't know how everyone puts them into one animated spinnie. I'd really appreciate any help with it since I've never made one before and it's kinda necessary for presenting this very large project I'm doing with another builder.

  13. Today I bought 75099 Rey's Speeder on a bit of an impulse, along with a reduced 70791 Skull Warrior and a second copy of 75112 General Grievous (the pieces will mostly be used to upgrade my current Grievous). Now to just find the motivation to do some building...

  14. Stereophonics - Keep the Village Alive (album) - gotta love a little bit of Welsh rock! Particularly enjoying their new single "I Wanna Get Lost with You".

Sadly, I think this the last new release I expect I'm buying this year for myself. Nothing I see on the iTunes preorder list at the moment is in my musical interests :look:

  15. WoOOoo! Nice! Any pictures of the other ghost? Do these guys have backprints? That head is smexy!

    ~Insectoid Aristocrat

They both have back printing, and it actually turns out these two have unique torsos as well (never realised until I really scrutinised the different ghost torsos). Unfortunately the other ghost (Howla) is no longer in my possession so can't take any more photos of it unless I end up buying another army building pack, but only the torso on that one is unique. The head is standard Ninjago ghost fare.

    Pic of Wooo's back:

    wooo_back.jpg

And the one photograph I did take of Howla: (linking because it's a biggie)

  16. As a female, how does the existence of Roodaka make you feel? She's literally a walking stereotype, a femme fatale with heels and imposing breast.

I did think if it was really necesssary for the designers to give her heels, long "hair" and *ahem* big breasts. A little OTT if you ask me, but it did make for a nice Titan build.

But really the discussion of genders in Bionicle belongs in a different topic. I was pretty sure there was one made a while ago, but I can't seem to find it :look:

  17. Further, small proof of this: in this forum we're all males. Each one of us.

As they say where I come from, this is a sausage fest.

I'm actually female, so no we are definitely not all males here. I just don't like pink and cutesy dolls so I appear more manly than I really am

But I got to be honest, this matter of gender in Bionicle has come up time and time again and to be honest I find it a little boring. Yes Bionicle's target market is primarily boys and LEGO seems to think that female characters don't appeal to boys, when in actual fact I've seen plenty of boys enjoy Gali and other female Bionicle characters. Yes, as a female I would like to see more female characters but to be honest, I'm quite happy that female characters exist at all in a very male-centric line, even if they can sometimes be under-represented (see lack of Skull Villain pairing for Gali then subsequent less-focus-on-Gali in the summer animations so far for instance).

  18. There is a way to attach a Kaiju fin to a 7M leg bone if you don't mind using a slightly unstable attachment method and also don't mind the Kaiju fin the wrong way up. Just use a rubber Technic connector. It's a little bit of an illegal method, sure, but I've used this connection type in quite a few MOC's of mine, such as my Golden Furious and it works well.

Alternatively, if you want to armour up Cody's and Jango's back legs, why not employ the method that the upcoming FO Stormie uses? This method? I plan on doing this with Cody and Jango to bulk up the back of their legs a bit as soon as I can be bothered to make a Bricklink order

  19. My all time favourite song would have to be Uprising by Muse. I'm a Muse fanatic through and through, and out of the 50 most played songs in my iTunes library (out of over 2300), 19 of them are Muse songs. Yes, I even like the song they did for the 2012 Olympics!

Other favourite songs of mine (that aren't Muse songs) include Ten Tonne Skeleton by Royal Blood, The Swarm by You Me at Six (yes, that Thorpe Park promo post-apoc rock song as done by a punk band that happens to be local to that theme park  ), Propane Nightmares by Pendulum, I Predict a Riot by Kaiser Chiefs, This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race by Fall Out Boy, Something from Nothing by Foo Fighters, Guilty All the Same by Linkin Park... I could go on forever because there's so many songs from many different genres that I just absolutely love

  20. And about the Villain Pack actually, I've noticed an explosion in their availability. There's 4 people in the UK on eBay that have them. And I know I can also buy them from sellers in Hungary and Russia on BL, and they're not absurdly expensive either (the one in Hungary is being sold for HUF1850, about $6.50 or £4.30)

Question is: where exactly is everybody getting them from and how have so many got into circulation already? Was it part of an offer somewhere, because it seems quite common and easy to buy for an "extremely rare" polybag. The HF Villain Pack from last year was a lot harder to come by, even from Russia which I know was the only country to even get that polybag (it was a freebie in the Russian equivalent of a LEGO Store I believe). Think I only ever saw one of those pop up for sale, yet I'm seeing hundreds of this Bionicle polybag and I don't even know how it's been distributed yet :look:

  21. I'm guessing the fact that they'd have to recolor the round armor piece. I really think they should have just removed a few pieces that weren't 100% necessary to scrape up the budget to recolor that piece, because gunmetal is just close enough to black that it causes a weird colorscheme Uncanny Valley effect, while silver, being brighter, helps liven up a colorscheme.

Round armor piece came in black in Toxic Reapa. ;)

So yeah, they both came in black.

I think they probably went with gunmetal for Vader since that was probably the cheapest option and the best compromise. Considering that silver would have required an all-new recolour and bringing a certain other recolour from the dead, and the black round shell was last seen 3 years ago and was retired in early 2013 (hence would cost more to remake), and all 3 different gunmetal pieces on Vader were still in production when the design was finalised, so that's my theory over why LEGO went with gunmetal over silver or black.

Though don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see the round shell in silver or return in black, and I would have loved to see the square shell return in silver (we only ever got ONE of those, in 2013 Bulk).

  22. On another topic, interestingly I saw that my local LEGO Store (Watford, UK) has started to sell polybags, which is something I've never really seen them do before. And they had a whole bunch of the Bionicle Hero Pack priced at £3.99 each. I don't know if they were just selling off excess stock or whatever, but the presence of polybags they had never offered before as well put an end to that theory. Sadly I couldn't see the Villain Pack, but is it possible that the Villain Pack could eventually be sold in LEGO Stores?
