  1. Eh... I just cannot like that torso shell no matter how hard I try to :look: And I just cannot get over the legs - having 7M thighs but only 5M shins just makes for an extremely awkward figure. Think I may swap out for 8M thighs and 7M shins to correct both the leg proportions and the overall proportions.

And while I don't mind asymmetry like this, the way that Vorox armour is connected to the shin is just... no :sceptic: I am going to have to see how she looks with a more symmetrical armour setup.

Either way, she's definitely not going to be my first purchase.

  2. Very nice! Out of all the sets, I think I'm going to make this my first Bionicle purchase in the New Year. There's just something about a dark, evil anthropomorphic zombie deer that really strikes a chord with me. Great stuff.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Dark Red barbs though, those are brand spanking new in that colour and I couldn't be more eager to get my hands on a bunch of them. I've been waiting years for that barb to appear in a red colour!

  3. Yeah so I everyone else. Supposedly, European counties are supposed to getting them in less than a month and the US will get them in March

If I remember correctly, we didn't get pictures of the Tournament of Elements Ninjago wave until mid to late December (if at all!), and those sets came out in my country on the 1st January. I remember finding the store calendar for January 2015 in December and it prominently had Ninjago featured, and then picking up Titanium Dragon on New Years Day

I would be willing to bet that it's the same case this year, though I wouldn't be entirely opposed to Ninjago being released in March... if anything, it would give my funds a chance to recover after the beating it will get in January when loads of other stuff I want gets released

  4. More evidence of Kopaka and Melum being the equivalent of 25 Euro, at least in Europe, this time from Swiss shops:

    1)Cheaper than MMvsSG

2)More expensive (every set got a markup), but still cheaper than MMvsSG

And would anyone be interested in some overly-detailed-calcs-no-one-asked-for that I did detailing how the Toa heights/body builds changed from 2015 to 2016? Anyone?

This somehow gives me some hope for the UK price of Kopaka and Melum.

Given last year's Toa and Protector prices, the UK prices SHOULD be as follows (I can't think of a reason why they shouldn't be this price though, given US prices haven't changed between the "classes" of set):

    Creatures: £9.99

    Small Toa: £12.99

    Large Toa, Umarak: £14.99

TBH, Kopaka and Melum looks more like a £19.99 set to me, but it will probably be more like £24.99, the same price as MMvSG in the UK and equivalent to the price of 1 Creature and 1 Large Toa. I know loads of other people have said it, but the Unity set should really have had a trap at the very least...

But, I'm still looking forward to all these new sets... I've been told I might even get a Creature under my Christmas tree this year if I'm lucky

  5. Either Finn will sell in virtue of the "Main character effect" (which I guess is what they attempted with the UK release of Luke, who was priced like Obi Wan), or he will flop horribly.

I can tell you, the Main Character Tax being applied to Luke in the UK made Luke an absolute flop in the UK. While most retailers stock Jango, Cody and Obi-Wan (and some bigger supermarkets stock Vader as well), and they sell pretty well, I have not seen Luke anywhere outside dedicated retailers, and where I have seen Luke stocked, he's always warmed the shelf while all the other Battle Figures simply fly off the shelves. I get the impression most UK retailers don't even WANT to stock Luke.

If they do the same with Finn, LEGO have obviously not learned their lesson from ^ yet... applying main character tax to a sub-par model isn't always going to work :sceptic:

  6. Well, I just had a good look at all of these via Brickset. Most of them look pretty good so far, and according to their Brickset listings, most of these are $19.99 (that should translate to £14.99 in the UK) sets. 2 of them are $24.99 (will likely translate to £19.99), one of them being Kylo Ren (fair enough, he does have 2 capes!). The other is... FINN. I guess that's main character tax for you :sadnew:

But, I do like the concealment of the gears on Finn's back, as shown in this picture. Is that a new Technic panel I wonder? And he is the first set to sport a printed SW shoulder armour piece.

The main thing bugging me though is that I wish Rey, Finn and Poe used the SW leg armour that Kylo, Phasma and the Stormies use. A normal shell doesn't really look right on the lower legs. It would have only needed to have been recoloured for Poe too...

At least this wave appears to be much cheaper than the last wave overall, and hopefully the $19.99 sets are £14.99 and the $24.99 sets are £19.99. Please LEGO, don't do a Luke markup on the UK again!

  7. I do like this one! I can complain about your Spyro's belly, I mean it isn't bad, only looks a bit weird IMO, but this head... This head is amazing! Really well done, very nice details.

    -H1unter

Sweet build! Would love to see it in real brick if those pieces ever come in purple. Regarding his belly, have you thought about experimenting with various slopes and hinges?

The belly might look a bit weird at first, sure, but it uses a technique with rigid 3mm hoses that I just fell in love with, and I was going for the segregated belly "scales" look, hence why I ultimately went with that technique. It's exposed at the side too much, I agree, but there wasn't any good way to hide it  . Hard to explain, but System slopes or even CCBS shells just didn't cut it for me.

Spyro used to be one of my favorite PS1 games, thank you for bringing my childhood memories back. :cry_happy:

The MOC is great but I can't help thinking that his eyes are bit too close-set.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels strongly about Spyro, it makes me want to dig out my old PS1 and play all 3 Spyro games all over again for nostalgia's sake :cry_happy: The eyes are a bit too close-set I admit, but hey, that's the limitation of the scale I was working with. I ultimately wanted to get a small slope or tile in between them to counter the problem (and thus shape Spyro's eyes a bit better because they're more oval than they are in this model) but that didn't work :sceptic:

  8. Thanks so much for the comments guys!

Since there seems to be such a call for it, I'll put Crash Bandicoot on my to build list for certain. After all, he is just my second most favourite videogame character ever. I do fear that this will eventually lead me into building loads from the Crash and Spyro universes. I've already thought about doing some of Spyro's big bosses

  9. So, I was looking over the images I had of these sets earlier and trying to figure out how all the new Masks attach (to plan a wall display with the right attachments for every mask). It's clear to me that the Toa and Umarak still use the head connector block this year's sets had, but it's not clear to me if the Creatures use that same piece to attach their masks as well. Anybody able to help me see how the Creature's masks attach?

  10. Well, turns out I'm back with another MOC, but it's not of any old imaginary creature of the night, nor an alien race of chess pieces. It is, as the title suggests, none other than my favourite video game character ever. Spyro the Dragon! This in particular is based on his original Nineties game appearances (not Skylanders) which holds quite some nostalgia for me. I always wanted to build this little guy with Technic and CCBS bits, but sadly, not enough pieces exist in the right colours so, rather than my original intention to build this in real life, I had to resort to LDD. And here it is:

    22448949964_10086ff91a_z.jpg

Here's the stuff I wrote for the Flickr description:

Having recently rediscovered all the old things I used to love as a child (from the Nineties), I recently had an overwhelming urge to build one of my favourite video game characters ever. Spyro the Dragon. This MOC is based on the appearance of classic Nineties Playstation 1 Spyro (not Skylanders Spyro, I wish classic Spyro would come back! Then I'd have a reason to buy a Playstation 4  ). Built in LDD (was going to be a real-life model until I realised the lack of purple Technic and CCBS meant the end result would look nothing like Spyro) and rendered using Bluerender. The model took about 8 hours to build. And as a little extra, I've also built his faithful companion Sparx the Dragonfly, in his full health colours.

And, as with the Chess pieces which some of you may remember, I've also made a GIF spinnie. Click here to view it :classic:

Anyway... positive comments, constructive criticism and butterflies for Spyro's companion Sparx all appreciated :classic:

  11. I haven't really had any problems since the downtime, I didn't even have to sign back in. But, is this possibly the cause of the fact that I received a PM (well after the downtime), but I never received my usual email notification about it?

  12. His description says he has a bow, so I guess they just decided not to show it here for whatever reason. Umarak actually had the blade in the prelims though, it was attached to one of his legs.

Oh yeah, how on earth did I miss that blade!? I even have high quality prelims on my computer, showing the blade clear as day :look: Remind me not to make comments at 2:40am while struggling to stay awake

Good to know about the bow though. I thought they might have showed the bow mounted to the back of Umarak, but obviously not.

  13. They all look pretty great, but I've noticed something. Umarak had a Skull Warrior-esque bow in the prelims and no Skull Villain blade, but here all he has is a Skull Villain blade, and no bow. Does Umarak not have a bow anymore? Or is it possible it's just been omitted from this picture? I'm glad to see that the one-piece torso shell has some piston detailing too.

The only thing I don't really like here is Tahu's weapons. Too much Technic and a bit oddly designed if you ask me... :look:

  14. I have just one emote to describe these:

Honestly, I wasn't expecting to see official images of these anytime soon, so this is a welcome surprise. So much fabric goodness, more than just capes too, it's just too bad Kylo Ren doesn't have a fabric hood. Black SW shoulder add-ons, I can see myself using a ton of these. Even the headsculpts are pretty decent. The only problem I have with these is Finn. Don't know what it is, maybe it's the way he's posed, maybe it's the fault of his custom torso build, but his neck connection looks so awkward and weird looking. Makes it look like he has a really long neck *huh* As long as he's in the cheapest price bracket, he will be a better set than Luke, if only for all the delightful dark tan and brown

I spy bad rendering on Kylo Ren though - look at his lightsaber-wielding arm

And Phasma is just boring flat silver, right? That picture makes her look like she's entirely chrome silver, but I know such a set wouldn't really be feasible :look:

In conclusion - I think I'm going to need 2 of each of these, and 3, maybe even 4 of that FO Stormtrooper. One Stormie just isn't enough

  15. From what I've heard (from heavy conversations about it with friends), the 3 Summer sets were pulled from European production at the last minute. Apparently not even the designers of the sets know why they were pulled, I can only guess that the line sold poorly in Europe? Though I will add, in the UK, Ultrasonic Showdown was in stock on Asda's website for a VERY brief period back in July but I missed the boat and the listing was pulled.

Well, whatever the reason, it's a shame. I was lucky to get the Ultrasonic Showdown as a birthday gift a couple of months back, but finding the Portal and Boat sets is proving a real thorn in my backside, especially due to my reluctance to order expensive stuff from outside the EU. My last hope is that they might be sold at a convention (Brick 2015 Birmingham is this week for instance, their marketplace is very good for stuff like this apparently), but I don't hold my breath :look:

(in fact I was looking for robot shark, none in bricklink?)

The robo-shark is on Bricklink  Makes me sad I didn't react quickly enough to them being sold at $5 each, now they're $25 each... and the cheaper used one doesn't ship to my country either :cry_sad:

  16. Nice MOC, but the head looks kinda messy for me.

I personally don't see the messiness in the head :look: Unless of course you mainly refer to the random dark gray liftarms which could make it appear messy - couldn't help it though, I was caught out and run out of black ones, and since this was a competition entry, I didn't have time to wait around for pieces to arrive from BL. Reminds me, I really need to order some black 1x2 liftarms

  17. The problem here is, I really struggle to see this as steampunk. Making something gold and brown doesn't necessarily make it steampunk (and if you are going to call it something, expect to get flak for calling it that if it doesn't convey it  ). Steampunk is usually described as being the past if the future came early (or something to that extent) and has to have a few major components, the most obvious of which is steampower. I would have liked to have seen this guy running on steam, to show how out of time he really is. And yes, gears/clockwork is a major design choice for many steampunk visions and would be very fitting, even if they don't function they are a visual aspect of the theme.

Gold, brown and gray is the most typical color, so, you wouldn't be throwing much off by incorporating that color.

And actually I might disagree to some extent with the head- I like the choice of mask, it's very fitting for a mechanical-steam-abomination that just climbed out of the dirt, and I have seen plenty of things that are huge bodies with small heads that work, but it's placement on top of that shield is a very strange contrast to me.

Alright, I admit I made a mistake calling it STEAMpunk. It's not really a style I've built in before and I severely lack (large) gears in my collection so I was bound to get flak I guess

Oh, and I meant light grey wouldn't really go, given gunmetal pretty much fulfilled the role of grey here. The shield was a bit of a design choice, there to cover up ugly connection points, but I can see that the all-gold can make the head seem really small. Perhaps it may have helped to use a pearl gray or a printed dish, to break up the monotony there. None of the printed dishes would have fit though given all the ones I'm aware of incorporate red, which the MOC uses none of and would look out of place.

Not that I can really make any changes to it now I've stripped all the armour off it though!

  18. Well, the way I got around that is to just say he's wearing a ton of armour - but on Leewan's request I stripped him of his armour to show the underlying bone structure - maybe to show that he really is a skeleton underneath

    22325423072_ca88cfc026_z.jpg

    22150700028_8935738a14_z.jpg

I'm actually going to re-skin this general structure (as I'm really really pleased with how it came out, it seemed a shame to destroy it :look: ) as something completely different in the near future. Not sure what, but it won't be a skellie that's for sure

  19. Really cool)

A perfect use for Sauron's eyes)

And I like a lot of spikes on it's back)

When I read the name of this topic, I immidiatly thought about Cerberus)

So I suppose your hound can look a way more nicer whith two o three heads))

Those aren't Sauron's eyes, they're 1x1 round tiles with flames from the Chima line :classic:

And my gosh - how did I not think of doing a Cerberus MOC? Now I wish I'd done three heads for it

  20. I've really been in an MOC'ing mood lately. Partly because every person I know strangely hasn't been around for days, partly because I have nothing better to really do, and partly because there's an MOC contest over on BZP which I'd thought I'd try entering (and probably lose as usual  ). And since the theme of the contest is Halloween, it was a perfect excuse to finally build something I've been wanting to build for a long time: a horror hound creature

    22294463522_148daf5aa7_z.jpg

So yeah, when I saw the theme of the latest BBC contest on BZPower, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. It was basically an excuse to put all those delicious Spring Yellowish Green parts from the Ninjago Possession sets I've been stocking up on to good use! I would have really liked to have made the Horror Hound Dark Blue instead of Black, but eh, no Dark Blue CCBS exists sadly

I really like how the head came out on this model, and really it all stemmed from the desire to use the Skull Army armour add-on as a jaw piece, and it was more successful than I originally thought it would be.

So fear the night of All Hallow's Eve, for the Horror Hound is here to hunt you down and consume your soul... :devil_laugh:

And some more pictures for your viewing delight... try not to get too scared now

    dscn6726.jpg

Anyway, enjoy. Comments, constructive criticism and the like much appreciated :classic:

  21. While the MOC uses very interesting techniques, I can't really see how it's steampunk, aside from its colorscheme. I think adding some gears here and there would really improve the MOC's look and give it a proper steampunk, well, look.

Aside from that, the head is just way too small. He looks more funny than menacing or sp00ky because of that :s

It doesn't mean this MOC is bad, but definitely has some things that can - or even should - be improved.

I use the term loosely - and as I said, first steampunk-ish model I've done. It's just the first thing that came to mind when I thought "brown+gold, with pistons". Appears I forgot the gear element, though looking at it again, I'm not sure where they could be incorporated. Pretty much all useable connections are used. Plus, all the large gears I have (about 2 in total) are light grey anyway, it wouldn't really mesh incredibly well with the colour scheme I have here :sceptic:

And the head - can't be helped given the main reason I built this was to use the gold Kulta mask. I could build a larger head for it in the future, but it's likely I'm just going to re-skin the bone structure completely and make it into something else (the torso structure is my favourite bit about the MOC and I don't really want to take that bit apart  ) as this thing has all my gold and all my brown pieces in it. And I need them back

  22. Finally! After a long hiatus of not building anything (that collab project I did really did drain my creativity for a while afterwards  ), I'm back with a new MOC. Though I may well have made it just to show off my latest rare acquisition... Kulta's mask in Pearl Gold!

    dscn6714.jpg

Surprise, surprise - it's another original creation Skull Villain from me. Skull Smasher, a hugely successful wrestler in his previous life during the age of Steampunk and given new life by "mysterious forces", is an eloquent brute who towers above even Kulta, and could "accidentally" squash a Protector underneath his feet and throw Toa around like they were a dog's chew toy. Even Kulta himself dares not underestimate Smasher's sheer power, as Smasher could crush Kulta in an instant in one of his huge hands. But don't think Smasher is all brawn and no brains or class. Smasher is incredibly vain as far as Skull Villains go. He never goes out without wearing his feather and velvet robes, held together with his lucky golden bone. Show him a mirror or give him a camera (he'll stop mid-fight and take a selfie of him crushing his victims) and you'll probably distract the titan enough to get past him... or land the killing blow on him. Selfies are dangerous things!

Anyway, onto some full pictures then!

    22087914500_b534b8ee1c_z.jpg

    dscn6715.jpg

An interesting side note: He got named "Smasher" not because of his giant hands, but due to the fact that I was listening to a lot of the rock band The Offspring while building him, and they have an album named "Smash". So there you go

This is actually the first time I've ever tried to do something even vaguely Steampunk themed (though my second creation done in this sort of colour scheme, the first being my dragon, Golden Furious), so it's probably not perfect. Comments and obscure references all appreciated :classic:

  23. Can anyone tell me if Axl's torso (underneath the big, chunky armour/upper torso/arms) is actually an armless torso, or is it permanently connected to the chunky armour? The printing on it suggests they are separate parts, but it's giving me a right headache trying to work out if the two parts are separate or not

Will we not know until somebody here has actually got hold of the figure?

  24. I got to say, I didn't think I was going to be into this theme. I was hoping I wasn't going to be into this theme (more for the sake of saving money than anything  ). But now I've seen most of the sets, I actually like some of them and the slew of new parts has definitely got my interest (please, LEGO, fix your shoddy BnP service so I can actually buy some of these new parts in useful quantities without the high BL markup that'll be tagged to them! ). I'm personally quite pleased that the Constraction mace half comes in trans-orange, and I could have really done with that trans-orange and black fractured polygon piece when I was trying to build myself an enormous Balrog a year or so ago. It's like LEGO are taunting me sometimes

I know that most of the bad guy sets are must-buys for me as they do look truly monstrous (and I like that sort of design), but I can't really get into the good guy vehicles for some reason. The blue and TNRO combo seems to really hurt my eyes :look: Even so, with LEGO sets seemingly improving in design year on year and more and more interesting new moulds being released that I could potentially find a place for in my MOC'ing collection, next year is going to make me very broke indeed. Time to get a better paid job methinks!

But I have a question: is that a torso without arms on the Axl minifigure? I'm betting that the torso is permanently attached to the big shoulder armour, but if not - seems very odd to have a torso without arms in a set.

  25. It's available for HUF 1850 from a seller in Hungary on Bricklink, which is cheaper than what I see on eBay.

Yeah, I ended up caving in and buying the Villain Pack from that seller a few days ago. It's a good price and shipping is a reasonable rate too (shipping to most of Europe is EUR 2.80), even if they are a bit slow invoicing. I should get it sometime next week, which is a good thing as I have a golden steampunk Skull Villain in the works and the mask will fit it perfectly
