I recently came out of my dark ages as my oldest daughter is getting into Lego. Our current project is building our own little lego town areay for my girls to play with. We have a bit of an unusual space for it. A large elevated cut out space in the back wall of our family room. It's not huge, 112 studs x 112 studs...I measured. Anyway, the name of our little town is Brickswood Hollow. Due to size constraints, bricks on hand, budget and my own love of the classic sets of my childhood in the 80's our buildings will be somewhat close to the size of the classic buildings. I'm thinking most will be about 16 wide and 8-12 deep, open on that back.
These first buildings I put up today were to test the space and see what kind of room we had and I'm happy with the size.
My first is a modified version of one of my favorite classics- the Snack Bar.
Due to the bricks I had on hand, this actually didn't turn out as I intended. I was not planning on going with a blue roof as I didn't think it would work as well with the red I was adding to the piece. However, I found a few blue slopes to tie the blue plates to the rest of the building and I think I actually like it better than my plan. The nice thing about using the blue is that it means I end up using every piece from the Snack Bar set with one exception. I swapped the black slope they use for the register for a new modern printed computer piece. Of course I didn't take any pictures of the interior so you can't really see that anyway. The interior still has some finishing to be done.
The building next to the snack bar is really just a building I made to test the size. It's not going to be a part of the town, at least not in it's current state.
It's a very rudimentary start, I know, but it was a good experience for me to figure out the size I want for the buildings going forward. Hopefully there will be bigger and better things to come as our little town comes together. We have some big plans for things down the road and some ideas for creative uses of our space.
