Differences powerfunctions and mindstorms

In the beginning with mindstorms with RCX was the technic motors compatible, as I understand it.

With the NXT they were different but there were a official conversion cable, but now with EV3 there is total separation, even if the old NXT conversion cable still works but is not sold.

I think that is a pity, it would be nice to have a total interoperability.

But maybe there will be no more mindstorms in the future, the new BOOST may be an indication of that.
