Faefrost Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Todays Telegraph seems to be exploring the sudden rash of Lego thefts and the surging price of Lego in the aftermarket. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11053507/Thieves-target-Lego-sets-as-value-soars.html Not bad. grum64 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) My LEGO is stored away in a secure 'shed' (insulated & humidity controlled/heated) that's covered by CCTV and whilst I don't have any of the hyper valuable sets mentioned in the article after reading it I think I might buy a couple of better padlocks! Zerobricks Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Nice career choice for those criminals... Who says Lego is not usefull Quote
paul_delahaye Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) The only thing going for house burglaries is they usually want to be in and out as quick as possible, the thought of them having to load a vehicle with loads and loads of boxes, would probably be offputting to most, when our house was burgled 2 years ago, they walked straight past my LEGO, which probably would have netted them a nice earner, but they would have to put a lot of effort into selling it. They want the quick wins. Edited August 25, 2014 by paul_delahaye Quote
dougstar Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 found it hard to swallow but it seems that there are unscrupulous people out there http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11053507/Thieves-target-Lego-sets-as-value-soars.html doug Quote
talos Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I know when I have to have someone in the house, like a worker whom I don't know, I don't want to draw attention to the Lego, though everyone who sees it, wants to go over and look...I would hope not to think about coming back, and breaking in. I know how some people can tell people they know and next thing you know, its a target. I know thats how a lot of guns get stolen... I always set the alarm system when I go out. Quote
iamwhoiam Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Looks like I have to hire a night guard for my Lego! Maybe I should do background checks on whoever enters my Lego room! Perhaps I should set up security cameras in my house! Lol, but in all seriousness I am not concerned for my own collection. However it is disconcerting to know that people are starting to steal a classic toy! Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 My biggest concern would actually be birthday parties at home or sleepovers where my boys have guests. Most children would probably not steal, but I really do not want to discover later that the only Darth Vader we have or a Ghostbuster has walked out. Quote
Vindicare Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Oh man, that's awesome! I know Caleb Raff's store very well. It's just down the road from my place. It's really crappy to hear all these stories popping up. Quote

They want the quick wins. That's a great point. The only sets I have out, for the most part, are bigger City/Creator sets for my town. Although, I do have a majority of sets in plastic containers as well as unopened sets. Ugh, this is so disappointing to hear. Oh the celebrity of LEGO ! Luckily for myself, I live in a quiet neighborhood & not many people even know of my collection. Edited August 26, 2014 by Legocrazy81 Quote
Tariq j Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 It's very sad to see peoples collections getting stolen. I personally, don't put padlocks on any security on my Lego collection, as well as being secure I feel it draws a lot of attention to the cupboard/room itself. Quote
Appie Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Lego could easily fix this by re-releasing some sets. The same happened with videogames who ended up on PSN or Xbox Live. Physical copies of the games on the ancient console they originally appeared on dropped significantly in price after that. Few months ago there were rumours of a millennium falcon UCS re-release for 2015 so perhaps Lego is already on board. Quote
Tech Artist Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 None of this is surprising. If there is a way to make money, people will do it and this includes criminals. With as popular as Lego is right now and what it's selling for, this becomes a perfect target for criminals. Quote
