OK, I'm an idiot,

Shortly....yesterday I was working on one of my LDD moc. about 2500 parts was 95% finished.....ready for instructions.

While working I did hide most of the parts, and was working only on a small area to make some changes. I did save, and then I did call bak the hidden bricks. All the layers were empty! :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy:

It means I lost 4 weeks of works, a all model and I'm desperate. There is a way for a computer geek maybe to go into the hidden files of the system (I use Mac) and try to find a early stage of that file???

Guys save me..that moc would have blowed your mind!

Hi,

Do you use a time capsule for your back-ups? If that's the case you can easily recover an earlier version (last day) of your MOC.

If you use Time Machine for backups then you should have a snapshot of your computer every hour and can just go back to a time before you hosed the file. If you don't do backups, you are in trouble.

then I'm in trouble! I mean....the last time I used Time machine was a while ago. As I said I'm an idiot!

I can still build ig again, but it's such annoying as all the techincal solution I found for that model are now lost...I can't remember all those 2500 bricks....... :cry_sad: :cry_sad: :cry_sad: :cry_sad:

For future reference, you can also store your LDD files on Dropbox, which automatically syncs to the cloud. There you can always get an older version of the files you have stored there.

I already have done that and have several files where I can access daily versions from a half year back or more.

Porbably the best thing is to use TimeMachine on a regular basis.Plus I'll be saving copies of file everywhere....like seeding seeds ahahah!

Anywya guys, I don't give up. And this actually can be a way to build it again and make it in a even better way! It won't take too long as I remember how it was looking like!

I think, automatic backup works a lot better in cases like this. Things you have to start manually tend to be forgotten, in which case no backup usually is near as good as manual backup.

Hmmm, Time Machine is automatic, so you shouldn't have to remember to do anything. I haven't touched mine in years, but it has backups of everything going back all that time. Just set it to backup every hour (which is default). It will recycle space once your backup drive is full.

I feel your pain. Good thing I had similar issue in my childhood, so I made few lessons:

1. never work from start to the end with same file - make versions and save them as different file before/after making big changes. My bachelor thesis was v20, something like that.

2. make copies of your backup. Dropbox is a good option to keep your copy in cloud and few other places

They say there are two kinds of people: those who make backups, and those who will make backups.

...and those who check/test those backups :)

Hi folks,

I think everyone who uses LDD had this issue already. But the main fault is in LDD itself, why isn't there an autosave function?

@TIB: I really feel your pain...

I always put my wip in a email and send to myself, works as archive storage too, yes I know I'm cheap.

Can you share the file?

First answer to Pat: Obviosly the software it's a basic one, soon I'll move into Catia V5. Professional software, with a different storage concpet. (and modelling  )

But i reckon part of the mistake was my fault!

Answer to JIM: Ahhahhah sometimes I do the same! But this morning I'll order a WD 2T cloud Hard disk that talks costantly with my mac.

Answer to Zblj: What you mean? :cry_happy:

Anyway guys, alla I want to say is: now after 2 days I'm getting on it well once again. I never give up, so it will be finished, it will be as close as it was, if not better. It will take time, I know, but afterall it's a lesson learned and I'll use it for the future! I'll do my best to show you my latest creation as soon as I can! stay tuned, and wish me all the best for now on!

We need autosave feature in LDD, for every 5 minutes :)

I don't think that's the point! Actually.....I had exactly tha opposite issue!! I did save after deleting the bricks by accident....and I could go back!! What the software needs it's a "undo" button that goes backwords even if you saved!!! Like a lot of other softwares!

Anyway......I'm rebuilding it and I have to say I'm being lucky so far!!

Slightly off topic since I don't have any help to offer but I have learnt myself to use ctrl+s / ctrl+shift+s depending on software to save always with a new filename. These kind of files take pretty much no space from modern hard drives. It's nice to have many revisions of models even if you have backup system set up.

Dramkir it's what I normally do, specially at work (my real job I mean) and so far never had problem......but yes I made a mistake with the LDD and it happened!

"The show must go on".......
