Jim Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 From now on the Technic Forum will have a MOC of the Month (MoM) award. As the title suggests, this is an "award" for the best MOC posted in that specific month. Who decides what's the best MOC? I do, with several gifted Technic members We keep track of the MOCs and at the end of every month (beginning of the new month) we will vote and I will frontpage the MOC! And what is the reward? Well, I just told you....you get frontpaged! That's it?! Uhmm yes.... Oh, and you will receive the special Technic MoM tag (available soon). Oh, and you will be added to the MoM Hall of Fame (available soon). Why MoM and not MotM? MoM sounds and looks better What happens if my very special MOC ends up second, but it still is way better than the previous or next MOC of the Month. Well *scrapes his throat and talks with a Dirty Harry voice* Then you are sh-t out of luck! Exceptional MOCs will bypass the MoM qualification and will be frontpaged right away (or when building instructions are available). You are allowed to post suggestions in this topic, but the jury will be well aware of all the MOCs and we will be keeping track ourselves. So, we will pick from our own list, not the MOCs posted in this topic. So, allowed? Sure! Useful? Doubtful Quote
Gee Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Dunno whether this comes under the remit of MoM, but it'd be nice to see things being won by "learners" and up and coming builders as well as the guys who regularly showcase professional quality models. Kind of a "best new recruit" or "hasn't (s)he come on" sorta thing. Of course I'm no where near anything like that yet, but it would give the guys at the bottom something to aim for. Quote
Jim Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Not really related, maybe a bit, but I would like to add something like this to future contests. Having multiple categories to compete in. Otherwise people might stop entering contests, since they have the feeling they won't win anyway. (looking for the contest setup discussion topic from a while back, to discuss this). edit: found it: Future Contest Setup I will think about your comment, thanks! Quote
Paul B Technic Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 The MoM sounds like a great idea. I hope this might encourage some members to post up more MOCs :) Quote
JGW3000 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I think this is a great idea - the same concept works great on other blog-type sites that I participate in. I'd make one suggestion, need to figure out when a WIP becomes and finished MOC, as we will want each MOC to be at its best before going into the selection process. Quote
Lakop Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I'm liking the idea of tags. Could they be dated, ie: MoM, Jan 2014. Or am I asking too much. What do you think? H Quote

Builder should formally declare it's done. WIP could go on forever otherwise. Best to submit something on a slow month to better your odds. Quote
Jim Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Like postponing a movie to prevent it from running at the same time as a blockbuster! Lego MoM is big business these days Quote
Johnny P Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 like dr-spock says . waiting and presenting your moc in a month that guys like sheepo/ vfracingteam/sariel/bricksonwheels/ to name a few.don't present one of their mocs really gives you more chances. Otherwise the "less gifted" builders (like myself) never get a chance of becoming Mom. Unless you're a girl but thats a different kind of Mom. this Mom will encourage me to post my moc's. And maybe others to. Quote
Lipko Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 There could be a MoY too. You can start looking for Mo2013 Quote
JM1971 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Having something to aim for is always good to push development further. Quote
Jim Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 And let me be clear; the MoM isn't necessarily the most outstanding MOC. It can be a newbie's MOC who's made a lot of progression. The Pro builder's MOCs will make it to the Hall of Fame and Frontpage anyway. Soon we will have the Technic Pro tag. Maybe we will even exclude Pro builder for MoM, or we will have two categories, normal and Pro. Quote
Johnny P Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I like the idea of 2 categories. This way everybody gets a chance.excluding pro builders isn't fair imo. but how do you define if a model is pro or normal? does it depend on size, how many pieces,or do you look at the person to determine wether its pro or normal? for technic tags. Maybe something in the line of smal gear for normal and larger for pro? Or a liftarm and size depends on level of building?just thinking out loud here. Quote
Jim Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 We are working on a Pro tag for Technic Pro builders. When you have the Pro tag assigned, you will automatically be in the Pro category. This will be the pro tag, once it has been uploaded to the server: I'm liking the idea of tags. Could they be dated, ie: MoM, Jan 2014. Or am I asking too much. That will be too much. Every tag needs to be made and uploaded to the server. This might work out for some months or years, but it's not easy to maintain. And we might add models to the Hall of Fame for other reasons, so a generic HoF and/or MoM tag will be easier. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but let's keep it a bit more simple. Quote
jantjeuh Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 You can start looking for Mo2013 That's easy. Sheepo's Mustang. Hence, I agree with the notion to have a 'upcoming talent' prize or something like that. There's just no competing with the likes of Sheepo for us newbies! Quote
JGW3000 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Its simple, once you get any type of tag, you are no longer a beginner or at the 'normal level', but now compete and get recognized at the 'pro' level. This could work for contests with prizes also, and be a simple means to groups entries into two level of skills. Quote

There's just no competing with the likes of Sheepo for us newbies! That's not easy. Madoca's Wing body truck? Anyhoo, since the prize is ""only"" getting front paged, I don't really see point in making categories. If a model is good, it's good. Categorizing may lead to cluttering the Front page and making it pointless. Plus who will decide who is Pro and who isn't? I won a contest and I begged once to be blogged on The Lego Car Blog, am I a Pro then?* What happens if there are only a few new MOCs posted in a month, and none of them are Front page worthy? Because, say, they are photographed in the night on the carpet? I see no point in patting newbies of the back in that way. If a MOC is worthy, it gets Front paged. EDIT: I've just read the comment above and wanted to state: I don't feel like being a Pro at all. EDIT 2: Unrelated: Is there a Tag explaining topic, or at least could we can some tooltips on the different tags? Edited January 14, 2014 by Lipko Quote
Jim Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Winning a contest makes you a Pro So no patting on the back We're going to try the MoM concept, but if it doesn't work, we'll just stick to the Hall of Fame for frontpage worthy MOCs. Let's not worry too much and see what happens. Quote
legomuppet9 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Out of interest what are the requirements exactly for receiving all the different technic tags? just wondered as I don't see many around... And also I do think this MoM thing is a good idea Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 (edited) Tags and titles are given at the staffs digression and not to be asked for by the recipient. Edited January 14, 2014 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
legomuppet9 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Tags and titles are given at the staffs digression and not to be asked for by the recipient. I was not asking, course not that would be rude, I was only wondering as to how they are handed out Quote
Blakbird Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 That's not easy. Madoca's Wing body truck? Madoca is not a Eurobricks user. I'll assume that "MoM" awards can only go to people who have presented their model on this forum. Otherwise the pool is way too big and the tag cannot be awarded. That truck is awesome though..... KirTech LAB Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I really wonder - why do you suggest to exclud PRO builders??? Ancient wisdom says " The only way to become smarter - play with a smarter opponent "... Quote
