Seriously, and as an AFOL, have you considered quitting this hobby for one reason or another ?

1. Taking too much time ?

2. Wanting to explore other 'interests'

3. I really should be putting my $ elsewhere ...

4. Enough with this 'play' ... time to focus on contributing to Society, and possibly leaving a legacy behind ...

5. One's own mortality ... who's gonna sort my thousands of parts once I'm gone ... sure hope they don't end up as a bulk lot on eBay for a fraction of the initial investment ...

6. I've reached my 500 post ... a Knight now (with all Rights and Privileges as they said during my graduation), will take forever to reach the next level ...

7. What else ... ?

After missing out on buying a Metro liner 4558 in the box for $50 that's right $50! ( i rang the seller up asked for him to hold it for me, which he agreed, then i traveled the hour and half drive time to get it ,only for him to sell it to another guy for who offered him $55 :cry_sad:

I was so angry and upset i packed up a lot of my sets and sold them.

I still buy the occasional set however my interest is just not there anymore. and the hustle and bustle which used to be the 'Lego Room' of the house, just sits there gathering dust, which the occasional quick loop around the train tracks.

depends if it ever becomes an addiction.

As long as its a hobby, everything is fine. If its an extensive hobby you should question yourself if thats all you want to do with your spare time. If its ok with you and your family... everything fine.

For myself I will always question me if it takes to much time.

I can say that I was addicted to another hobby for quite some time.

I played MMORP games for over 10 years, spending nearly all my spare time on that. Which was ok at that time, as I had not much else to do. (Beside working, and doing the once a year holiday trip to some corner in the world).

But I managed to stop pretty much from one day to the other when I met my meanwhile wife.

And she was actually the one that got me back into Lego, with the 8070 as a xmas present 2 years ago ;)

This topic can quickly start going deep.

So let's go!

I would quit the hobby the day that my loneliness really gets to me.

I often take on comissions and if these are large projects, it will take much of my spare time. This has always been a problem when trying to maintain a steady relationship and whenever it has caused problems in the past I have always chosen to Monroe way of "If you can't handle me at my worst then you don't deserve my best", meaning that you should be able to tolerate that I might not invite you out as much when I'm working up to a deadline. It was the same that happened when I was writing papers for my Ph.D. (and with the same result, I might ad!) I have a hand full of broken relationships because I couldn't be there for others when doing all-nighters for conferences on the other side of the planet.

The hobby has, however, never been a problem when it comes to friendships - even close ones.

Luckily I can happily say that the LEGO hobby isn't a problem because you are "playing with toys for kids", but rather the time constraints when using it in a semi-professional context.

Not yet.

My Lego hobby is a nice and calming thing i do as some of the things i work with can get very unpleasant and horrible at times. When i build i mostly just concentrate on building which is nice.

Have always enjoyed Legos and will probably get more Legos when i get kids so the circle will never stop. I can see myself being old and buying new sets

As long as I have fun building stuff and have ideas for creations or modifications, I will not stop building with Lego. Of course, time is a big factor for such a hobby, but currently I have enough time for it and it is a good change to my other hobbies which are mostly related to computers. Also, when I am deep into building and thinking about a construction or mechanism, I tend to forget time, which in the end is good for my health because I forget to go outside for a smoke and bad for my health because I easily forget to drink. Well who cares. Also, I have finally a respectable collection of mostly Technic and enough parts to build most of what I want to build. I invested quite some time and money this year buying spare parts for the MOCs I want(ed) to build and am very happy with it.

Also, looking into the future, I guess I will not lose interest in Lego for quite some time. Great new sets coming out every year and no kids I need to invest in

You reached 500 posting in the wrong forum again. This is a general topic.

Not quite ... I 'feel' this is all about technic. Other themes come and go (Ninjago, Mars Attacks, ...), Technic is however always renewing itself, and that is why it exerts a greater pulling power than other themes. I'm not speaking for myself only, I see this regularly with my kids. They've outgrown all other themes, but Technic and Mindstorms ... they always come back to them.

Granted, there may be more people answering this thread in the general discussion, but I'm more interested in the Technic AFOL's perspective ...

That's 501 now ... I've crossed that line and must keep on going.

Honestly, I'm more likely to quit the community than the hobby.

Very nicely put ... Have Lego, Live Happy!

For me it helps to take my mind off other things and keeps me on the straight and narrow. I work in public sector so it takes my mind off public sector drivel and being overlooked for promotion whilst the dept implodes. My lego links to another interest of mine. Sometimes just ten minutes of building before I go to bed at night and I can come up with something good which I continue with the next day. I have no plans to stop.

Simple, when I get bored of it...

Lego as a hobby is tiring and frustrating for be, because I suck at Technic. Building simple stuff takes very much effort and time. Comparing myself with Piterx for example makes me want to quit. (EDIT: of course, I get real high when something is successful)

I always thought my technical abilities are outstanding, I'm a mechanical engineer now, but Technic was the last and strongest proof that I could be at best a medicore engineer.

On the positive side, I do think I'm good with "design", so my models look pretty cool, proportions of my models are good without much effort.

I had some pretty serious hobbies before, they were all life-defining activities, and they all got out of my life and I feel no remorse.

For example:

-astronomy

-music. Played on the drums in a band. I was so high from music for about 5 years that I can't even express.

-art

-paper modelling

-game programming (if anyone interested, you can check some stuff on my youtube channel).

On day, I may end up in Mongolia as a shepherd, or in Siberia as a lumberjack.

Yup, we got a bit deep here...

Oh well society isn't kind on my ideas of human anhilation for the good of the planet and the whales so i'll let my legacy of Lego mindstorms overlords for later.

5. One's own mortality ... who's gonna sort my thousands of parts once I'm gone ... sure hope they don't end up as a bulk lot on eBay for a fraction of the initial investment ...

Dude i will let my Technic coffin ready! PF enabled! Use the train remote to drive it to the pyre.

6. I've reached my 500 post ... a Knight now (with all Rights and Privileges as they said during my graduation), will take forever to reach the next level ...

Not yet there... and who cares I just want to keep posting on strange technic contraption threads.

7. What else ... ?

I have no room for more Lego... Really

So I don't think I will call quits by my own will.

I understand what you mean, but still this is a more generic topic, so I will move it to the General forum.

I don't buy/collect technic, so I guess I shouldn't answer here?? But I'm a rebel, so I will anyway...

I loved LEGO as a kid and got back into it later (typical story), but I did get back into it after I met my wife and we had our daughter. I have considered calling it quits for the most part just because of lack of time. We have enough money to buy the sets I want here and there, but I really don't have much time after I get off of work to do anything with them. They just sit in boxes in our basement waiting for me. And by the time I have time, I end up doing something else. I figure I'd rather spend time with my wife and daughter doing something than just sitting alone in a cold room trying to sort/build something. I just feel a lack of motivation anymore with LEGO, but I don't want to miss out on some of the sets, so I still buy them.

Money could be better spent, but since this is my only hobby it is actually cheaper than a lot of things. I collect LEGO, my wife collects clothes. As long as we are smart about our purchases it won't break the bank.

I'm sure if I didn't have my wife/daughter, then I'd have all the time in the world to do whatever I wanted with LEGO, but I'd choose them over LEGO any day.

As far as society goes, I've already done my part by becoming a doctor, right?

I haven't thought about my own mortality before, so I guess if I died tomorrow, all of my pieces would be sitting in boxes in our basement. I have been meaning to go through all of them and sort my old pieces by set since I don't use them. I only use the new pieces to build with.

This question is asked on every hobby oriented forum that I've ever participated in. The second most asked question is 'what happens to my (fill in the blank with a type of collectible) when I die?'

I'll stop Lego when it no longer interests me. I still have the highlights of my book collection and my tube (valve) radio collection. I emphasize highlights as I've thinned out both of them quite a bit. Once I had seen and done most everything in those hobbies that I could afford, I stumbled onto Lego. How long will it last? Until I run out of interest and/or money.

As far as society goes, I've already done my part by becoming a lawyer, right?

HAAAAAAA, couldn't resist that one. :-)

3 feet under does not sound that far? I am sure it is deeper over here?

I guess stopping the hobby really revolves around can I afford it and do I have enough room or time for it? I have another hobby that I have neglected for a couple of years in preference to this one but I am beginning to feel it calling me back. Not that i would stop one or the other all together, just which takes preference at any one time.

TheLegoDr: I don't understand, you've got 3252 posts in this (Lego) forum in two-and-a-half years, that's about 2 or 3 posts every day? And yet you haven't time to build the (Lego) sets that you buy? Something wrong there....

Perhaps it's some sort of sickness because I too find myself talking about LEGO more than actually building it.

Sometimes I pause before submitting another order on bricklink for yet another MOC that I'm gathering pieces for but have yet to build and wonder: where is the fine line between 'collecting' and 'hoarding'? Sometimes I find myself enjoying the creative challenge of building with my daughter's more limited collection than trying to build something color and piece-perfect.
