Erik Leppen Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I'm relaly not fond of the sets - should have been three sets instead; I see no reason why not - but the review is very good, and the photos are great! Thanks for sharing. Also the new parts look very interesting, especially the new 3x5 beam and the new tyres. The new worm, the 5L stopped axle and dark gray pin will have to prove themselves worthy, I'm not convinced of their usefulness yet. Quote
Paul B Technic Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Thanks for the excellent review, these sets do not do much for me and this review has confirmed this. Quote
freakwave Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Great review! I like the new tires. I think they would make the green truck look better as well! Quote
aol000xw Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Excellent review. I am only missing the box weight. It's a useful data point usually neglected. Quote
Feri84 Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Grat review! I think this is a good set with few new parts. Quote
Jim Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 I chime in to praise the quality of your review, and especially of photography. Wow! Thanks Philo! And thanks in general for the kind words. Glad the reviews are appreciated. Excellent review. I am only missing the box weight. It's a useful data point usually neglected. Thanks! I will make sure to include it next time. (I have included it for the 42024, based on Conchas' review) Quote
DrJB Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 (edited) Agreed: 1. Excellent Review 2. Very useful set for all the new parts Edited December 2, 2013 by DrJB Quote
technicmad Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Great review, but I'm drooling over the camera setup more than the LEGO set :) Put's mine to shame! Quote
Jim Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 Great review, but I'm drooling over the camera setup more than the LEGO set :) Put's mine to shame! Thanks. It's not a professional setup, just a bit more than average. I was lucky to get the lights at a reasonable price and they do work very well, even at night. Quote
piterx Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 cool review man! i really can't wait to get the truck....i ain't interested in building it but those wheels... Quote
Rockbrick Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 is it me or does the front loader look like a simplified 8453 with wheels too big ? Quote
Jim Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 is it me or does the front loader look like a simplified 8453 with wheels too big ? I think the wheels on the 8453 are a bit too small, compared to reel front loaders. Quote
Jim Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 Philo pointed out to me that the hires version of the Part images aren't linked properly. I will fix this asap. Thanks Philo. Quote
Saberwing40k Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 I find this set to be at best average. It's not really challenging, or that special, in terms of building techniques, and not that good a source for parts. I'm also highly dubious of the new 3l wormgear. I mean, I fail to see how this is in any way an improvement over the old one, and what it adds to building capability. Quote
Junpei Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I thought about that too, what extra functionality does that add? I don't get it. Amazing review though, I just wish I actually liked the set... Quote

I mean, I fail to see how this is in any way an improvement over the old one, and what it adds to building capability. I'm just guessing, but I would think the new worm gear is supposed to work with a gear rack. The old one one worked, but poorly since the worm teeth were inclined but the rack teeth were not. I'd use the old worm with spur gears and the new worm with rack gears. The other advantage is longitudinal locking. Worm gears cause load which tries to slide the worm along the axle. You don't have to worry about that with the new gear since it can't slide. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I'm just guessing, but I would think the new worm gear is supposed to work with a gear rack. Now that would be great as it would make building telescopic booms much easier. Quote

N-4K0 Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 (edited) Agreed, cute and funny little creation, technicmad makes me wanna make one myself Btw, nice review Jim Edited December 3, 2013 by Error404 Quote
GoldVillage Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Looks very good, however the excavator could been made better by controlling the bucket linkage arm from the superstructure. Quote
